Hi, I'm Ysis, Brazilian mummy to James (3) and Isabella (1) living in South Wales, UK; I post videos about mindful motherhood, raising toddlers, bringing up bilingual children, parenting away from home & lifestyle. 2019 is my no-buy year; this is the year I stop shopping! I will be documenting my journey towards becoming a more careful shopper and completely changing a lifetime of bad shopping habits.

Thank you for your video. After reading several different parenting books and trying out different methods and techniques, my husband and I have found that the positive parenting approach has worked best for our son. There are three things that we do that seem to really avoid power struggles and battles. 1) when we want him to do something, we go over to him, get down at his level, put a gentle hand on his back and tell him. We also have him acknowledge us by saying “okay mom”, or “okay dad”. 2) instead of making our requests immediate - we will often use a timer for him to transition. So if he’s busy playing, we don’t just tell him to come eat dinner, or come put on his shoes because we’re going somewhere. We will go over and talk to him and say “in so many more minutes (usually somewhere between 1-5minutes) we’re going to do xyz” and then we’ll set the timer. This works wonders for him!! 3) we give him choices - sometimes we’ll say “would you like to run to your room or crawl like a bear”. Sometimes if he’s in a more resistant mood, we’ll say “do you want to walk, or do I need to pick you up”. He almost always will choose to walk on his own - but on occasion we will pick him up and carry him.

When you’ve been raised in an environment of negativity, spankings, and even abuse, this is so hard to do but not impossible! Positive parenting / gentle parenting has truly changed our lives but Ive learned it takes practice and not to beat myself up. I’ve learned you get better everyday! We’re learning with our children and it’s a beautiful thing. ❤️

One thing I practice is to always apologize for my mistakes. It lets my son know I am human too, and that what I did was wrong. It doesn't give me the excuse to always act poorly, but on the circumstances that I do, it's important to acknowledge that.

I’ve been disciplining my son the negative way. I realized how BAD that was for me and for him. My husband talked to me about how he was raised as a child (got yelled at and spanked for not putting on shoes right away, for not knowing how to tie them, for causing his mom inconvenience and made to not talk to her until she forgave him... ect.) it made me want to cry. It causes more problems than solves! I love this new way of parenting and I love that I found a positive way. THANK YOU.

That is true. I suffer from negative parenting from both my parents (my dad a bit better then my mom) it really does do more harm then good and I’ve cried so many times from it. Good job in changing from negative to positive!

I haven't done much research, but I've heard and it does make sense that being overly positive and really making a huge deal out of the small positive things they do, can lead to a need for that kind of overly positive reaction to all things they do. Possibly leading them to be people pleasers and always seek that same reaction. I saw another video where the woman was talking about how she will just say something simple like "good, thank you for doing ..... ." So the children know they are doing the right thing, they get that positive reaction so they want to do more positive things, but it's not overdoing it. I like that style. I do love your technique of ignoring the small negative things so they realize it's not worth doing. Just sharing opinions and thoughts, I'd love to hear yours!

My elder sister got praised by everyone (except mom, bless her heart) for literally everything as a kid, which eventually stopped. She's in her thirties now and you definitely notice the "void of compliments" driving everything she does. She behaves like a helpless victim all the time to get attention and needs constant reassurance. I was always the least favourite kid, but now I'M the favourite because I had to learn how to get by with nobody appreciating who I was, which made me extremely self-sufficient and happy being on my own. Guess I win?

One of the things I started doing when I was nannying was I would use a 5 minute hourglass for timeout, that way they could watch the sand and calm themselves down, but also they know when the hourglass is up, they're time out is also up. And ill ask them "ok do you want to come join us again or do you need more glitter time" ( I had a sparkly hourglass). I think its rly important that kids don't associate time outs as shameful, but as a place to calm down and re-assess their emotions.

That isnt how you do time out you give a firm warning then if they do it again they get put on the naughty step and told why they are there they stay there for 1 min per age then you go back and tell them again why they are there then you make them say sorry

This is beautiful. I love that you honestly said you are only human. We all make mistakes but we grow when we learn from them. We improve when we grow from them. We don't just sit on what we have done and continue in it. We fail, we learn, we grow, we move on.

Yes, timeout should be about 1 minute per year of age and Yes, it must end. Using a little timer from the Dollar Store works just fine. Each child is different in the way they interpret the things we say and do, so it is important to read your children and discover how they are seeing things. I’ve had to make slight adjustments to some of these positive parenting tips to accommodate different children. I’ve raised 6 kids and share lots of lessons learned on my channel. I also love to hear from other moms because we learn so much from each other.

I once heard another way of looking at positive language that stuck with me.. and like you said, instead of saying "don't go in the leaving room with dirty shoes on" tell them what to do, because they literally don't know what you want them to do!! And now I just always tell them what to do instead of having to say no, don't do that. And that eliminates so much stress.

Thank you for making a video about these tips and helping me and other Moms think towards positive discipline! The thing I feel the need to mention is, I have heard that time outs can have a negative effect on the relationship with a parent in the long run. I have an almost 3 year old son on the Autistic Spectrum and I have struggled with knowing how to stop his negative behavior in a positive discipline way. I used to try putting him in time out but I began to feel that I was focusing on stopping the bad behavior rather than helping my son get to the root of the thing he was struggling with. So now when he throws things or screams, I know that he is getting over stimulated or frustrated. So now I am starting to say something like: "I see that you are frustrated, do you need help calming down?" If he continues the negative behavior then I say:"I see that you need help calming down, come with me to your room" often times when he is in his room he will calm down quickly and he is no longer over stimulated or focused on doing the negative behavior. Or sometimes if I'm feeling overwhelmed I might say: "Mommy is frustrated and I need some time alone, I need you to go to your room for a bit" and I take him to his room. I try to approach it as being understanding to him and what he is going through but not allowing the behavior to continue. I usually don't even have to shut the door to his room, but sometimes I need to help him get distracted with something that is calming for him. I'm not sure this approach would work for most kids and there may be better ways to do it but for now these have been life saver techniques for me.

Thank you for sharing. I agree with all the points, except for the reward with a star or something for them to do what they are supposed to do. I believe that getting them to do something for the real reason and not because a star is a better way of discipline . For example, if they need to put the toys away they should know that doing so it is easier for them to find the toys later and avoid accidents like somebody step on them. It might take time for them to understand, but I we shouldn't underestimate their understanding skills, really.

Thank you for this video - I love the detail you went into explaining everything. Something that I like doing is explaining how a behaviour makes me feel, for eg "I am feeling bit frustrated that I'm not brushing your teeth" (if my toddler won't let me brush them). She will give me a kiss and say sorry, and (usually) let me brush them. I try not to get too emotional, but I think it helps them to develop empathy to understand that we have feelings too x

This is great! You're doing great, Mom! And I really appreciate this video. Positive discipline is definitely hard! I have found that too much praise can sort of mirror the undesired effects.. when we praise them instead of their deeds (and/or do it too much) they end up doing xyz for the praise, not for the deed/outcome. This will lead to them not working as hard/smart/well on any given thing when they aren't going to get acknowledged for it. It can also lead to entitlement in some cases. Also it can confine how they see themselves. Example: *child paints a picture* .... "Wow, you did so good on that! You're such an artist, you're so good at art!" ... Alternative: "wow look at that artwork! I love the squiggly lines through the circle! How do you come up with that?" There's lots of recent studies on this! Either way, you're doing great and I really appreciate this video

I am currently really hurt by a friend's comment's to my partner and I about discipline. We have a blended family, and so does she, so I value her understanding in that respect. However, she went so far as to say because the police and DCF ENCOURAGE corporal punishment, that there is nothing wrong with it or with yelling at your kid. My heart is just broken... she is a family friend who thinks my partner and I are "woosies". She said there is nothing wrong with our child's biological mother hitting her. I know I shouldn't care.. she is her own person. It just makes me feel alone :( And I especially feel so hurt for my step daughter.

My husband and I discuss our strategy on how we are going to handle different situations as they arise. So usually it's our daughter goes through phases where she pushes specific boundaries with us, like throwing food on the floor ("well obviously you're done with your food" *takes food away*), not wanting to bath ("I know you don't want to bath, but being clean is important, why don't you just stand in the bath instead?", *places in bath*). So as things come up we kinda deal with 'categories' of situations where it's the same 'type' of misbehaviour, and we discuss opinions on how to handle that type. So sometimes we don't always discuss every little thing (because we've delt with that type before), but if something new comes up then we will discuss. I think like once a week at least? I think another thing is to also discuss in general what is our goal for parenting? Like what is the aim? eg: Are we aiming for them to be happy? respectful? obedient? polite? smart? It may seem obvious (everyone wants a happy polite kid), but you have to choose in the moment where is the priority for your parenting? What is the emphasis? For us, it is for her to be (1) physically safe (obviously), (2) her to feel connected to us and part of this home, and (3) her feel respected as a human being. Notice that these goals have nothing to do with her actions and everything to do with ours. This is because her behaviours should not determine her value in this home,, and she is going to be moulded by the environment she is in, and how she sees us behave, much much more than anything we say or any punishments she receives. These goals *vastly* change the way parenting is done. For us, spanking violates #2, which is why we would never spank our child. But some people don't have these priorities, or haven't thought about them (unfortunately), and their strategies are vastly different.

12 months had already passed since we used this specific program, a reading manual. The reading knowledge of my very own girl has continually improved. Right now, she is now able to read a few textbooks. Not just that, she is a superb speller also. What’s even more exciting is she can writes sentences today. Research about this reading book on Google. The reading guide’s name is *4ChildrenReading. Com*

I have an almost 2 year old son and he just is not phased at all by diciplin unless you pop his hand or something and even then he screams at the top of his lungs until hes babied. He has such a hardcore attitude at such a young age and i dont know what to do at this point and i really do love this technique, but i am afraid he wont respond to it at all. any advise? he already hits back when mommy tells him no and he will yell in anger and get in your face. if anyone has any advise it would be much appreciated.

This sounds EXACTLY like my son!! We put him in time outs, gentle taps, talking etc etc, n nothing phases him!! So here i am researching new ways to go about things bc i was just at my brothers house and my son was acting a FOOL. I’m sure they think we don’t know what we’re doing 😩Anyways, not giving up hope!

Great tips and good advice, however I feel it’s only really possible to pull all this off if you are in a secure place in life with lots of support around you. We’re broke in London with only one wage coming in and lots of debt going out and no family support around so things are very stressful for us. I find myself yelling at my 18 month old a lot and feeling so guilty for it. But she is happy and very loved so I feel it more than balances out. Plus she’s a bit wild so needs regular discipline and she does seem to often respond well to a raised voice.

I began training my boy to learn to read at 14 months. Despite the fact that I am uncertain concerning teaching my son how to read at 14 months, I made a decision to do it right and also made use of this reading tip. He is able now read through a whole book without my assistance at two years and four months. . Get this guide by Google. The program’s name is *4ChildrenReading. Com*

Hello, on your Star example, some might see this as bribing. For adults at work its an "incentive." EX "If you turn in your work early and are finished with everything you can leave early for the day" Incentive! INCENTIVE: "a thing that motivates or encourages one to do something." BRIBE: "persuade (someone) to act in one's favor" so very similar and I think often confused! I will remove naughty from my communication and hope to see the difference.

What about if they do something like rolling toilet paper and when I say no and they aren’t getting it when I say no there has to be a consequence if he doesn’t get it acting up if I say “no” you just marked on the walls he has to see that is wrong Standing in the corner a child has to see that their is consequences for certain behaviors Otherwise they will think I can do what I want and rob a bank and there isn’t consequences cause I never was taught there was consequences the positive disciplines are confusing time out isn’t working

My son is 18 months old and he’s my only child. He keeps slapping me at the moment and it’s making me so so sad and so ashamed especially if I’m out in public/at play groups. Do you have any age appropriate recommendations to tackle this? I feel this bad behaviour is a reflection on me as a parent which is so upsetting because i try so hard xx

Oh that’s really hard. I’ve been there before. Luckily for us it was just a phase; it was all about pushing the boundaries and understanding what was ok and not ok. We stayed firm in saying that’s not nice and it worked. My only tip, apart from give it time, is to distract him when it’s happening. Use that action to play with him and tickle him. Stop his hand mid air and start to dance. Just do anything to stop him getting that negative attention off you. Sending you lots of love and patience ❤️ x

This happened to me for a short period. When it happened I didn’t make myself available to him. Such as, if we were playing and he did that I would say “that really hurt my feelings and it wasn’t nice. I need a break. When you’re ready to be nice we can play.” I would stop what we were doing and let him cry it out if he had to. It took consistency and patience but it stopped. Good luck.

It is interesting video, but I don't think some of those techniques align with positive discipline. At least not the way I understand it or been expose to it. For example rewards in form of stars or so while I understand they can be helpful in short term they create the need for external motivation to do something, and eventually that stops working. I see doing things around home more as a being part of the family, although without forcing of course. Toddlers naturally want to be tidy and help around, untill they outgrow that stage. But I do acknowledge that my view on some of mentioned techniques might be different as we try to follow also Montessori philosophy and attachment parenting/natural parenting.

She shouldn’t suffer? I think this world seriously needs a mindset change. If you have more than one child the parent should take responsibility for the consequences and not be entitled to say how a child should feel or behave. The problem is that people think you can have 2,3,4 kids and then blame them for whatever behaviour. This world is not designed for parents to go and make as many children THEY want. Be happy if you even have one! Because the fact is that you actually do not have the capacity to raise more than one, maximum two. There are enough children in this world without parents and who are starving. So people! Change your mindset, get out of your heads and face the truth. This bubble everyone is living about having a family life has seriously made people irrealistic and ignorant. Parents, I you don’t have the capacity then do not invite more suffering. It takes communication skills, compassion and LOVE to raise a child! Not words like, naughty, needy, clingy. Then don’t have them!
