In creating the content for the "Living In the Pacific Northwest with Hal Byrd" channel, we often get asked by excited & optimistic, yet cautiously skeptical viewers what are some reasons a person would choose NOT to move to this breathtaking part of the United States? Because nothing is perfect - at least not perfect for everybody, right?..
Well in this episode, I share some unique, nuanced reasons not to live in Southwest Washington & Portland Metro from someone who's lived here now for the past 5 years... As well as the perspective of someone who's lived in every corner of the country.
I think you'll find this alot different (& deeper) than the usual "5 Things..." KZfaq video... Enjoy! - Hal

I’m from the Bay Area (alameda county) and my husband has a job opportunity in Vancouver WA. We had no plans or intentions of moving but an opportunity came and now we are researching the area. I’ve been binge watching your videos and they have been very helpful. My husband and I feel like making the move might be a really good choice. Thanks for making so many helpful videos!

I think on the political front it's way more Respectful than Phoenix AZ about different views. I personally had a conversation w someone who was completely opposite views about the vaccine. In phx this conversation would cause some high emotions. I'm personally for the vaccine and she wasn't but we agreed 💯 together it was a personal choice and we weren't going to attack one another about our views

Yes! Thank you for sharing. I feel like all political views are either welcome and/or tolerated here and while I disagree on certain things with people, they should have to unequivocal right to that freedom - pretty foundational for America in my opinion.

For someone who lived in Vancouver for 15 years, my perspective is a little different. When I fist moved there I was elated and absolutely loved the weather. But then as the years went on, the lack of sunshine and brightness does create a longing for sun and cloudless skies. I would say from last week in October to around June the weather is mostly overcast and a majority of the those days it rains. The climate vibe can feel a bit despondent when you live in it for over a decade like I have. If you don't get outside when you have those rare speckling of sunny days throughout the winter, it can make it feel as if the sunny days are even less frequent. So you have to make sure you get outside when the sun peaks through the clouds and you get a partly sunny day. This can help ease the winter blues. You will also have to deal with moss and algae on your roof, and you need to keep an eye out for mold in attics.

It's not just the days or inches of rain. It's the overcast and clouds when it ISN'T raining that can get tedious. If you live in a place like Tampa, there are more times of sun and blue skies in between the rains. I don't mind the rain - it's the dreariness combined with the early winter darkness that are tough.

Hal as you know its been a great move for me. I love the weather, the people are wonderful and the activities are plentiful. Hidden gems is a great way to put the food choices. It's like going on a scavenger hunt, when you find one you're surprised and happy. Being from California I most defiantly do not miss the relentless heat, drought, fires, smoke and the insane cost of living in the San Francisco Bay area.

Another excellent and informative video, Hal. I'm hoping to find work that is congruent with the cost of living in the Vancouver area. My impression is that Vancouver is similar to Reno, but with big water! I'm glad you mentioned health care. I do have a chronic and serious health condition, but like my friend in Sequim, I don't mind periodic trips to California for appointments...including my hair stylist. In terms of diversity v homogeneity, I like people who are kind to others. The restaurants you mentioned sound great (I'm a pescatarian). I think we get back what we put into a place. Do you ever do videos on affordable housing for the 55+ demographic? I work with active seniors, and am also a "young" active senior myself. Thanks for all you do...hope your husband's ankle is better!

To your point about your clients daughter-in-law and their family having an issue finding a seat at a dialysis clinic is the absolute truth. I worked in the outpatient clinic for a few years. It's an absolute hassle. I hope now, they were able to find a location. Love this video.

Hal, Are the healthcare options/challenges easier to manage if you are able to travel to Portland, or were you including Portland area resources in your comments in the video? Thanks.
@halbyrd_
@halbyrd_ Жыл бұрын
No I wasn't including Portland in my comments. From what I've heard (neither of us has been in the hospital here), the hospitals are great. It's the primary care & specialty services that seem to be more difficult to navigate. I have a doctor I like a lot & don't have issues getting appointments. But the ortho for Jarret was ridiculous

Vancouver WA...a suburb of Portland with a small/big town problem. It's cool if you like the burbs life. But if you're not in Seattle or Vancouver BC then you're not going to be in a major city. If you want cheap (for PNW) then go for Vancouver WA.

There is no perfect place for sure but after living in the PNW for almost 24 years, I prefer the weather here than most states other than CA which I cannot afford to live so it’s not even a consideration for me. We thought about moving to Nashville but they get quite a bit of rain, the summers are very humid, the numerous bugs and bad allergies just make it a no go for me. I use to complain about the weather years ago but I think there are other worse places to live in terms of weather. I am now considering the Vancouver area to retire. Coming for a visit to check it out. Funny… been here for so many years and never been to Vancouver. Looking forward to my trip in August. I have an eye on Ridgefield in particular. Really enjoy your videos.
