@@ugs192 When I was joining Army, I really didn't think about and honestly at the time probably wouldn't have cared about it. It didn't dawn on me that Army barracks can be crappier. And i didn't realize that some Army barracks, especially more with infantry (like marines) have it where you have soldiers sharing the same barracks room. And some Army barracks have communal bathrooms at the end of the hallway where everybody has to share, including shower. I've been told that some soldiers because of this and how the Army does PT, don't even get the time to shower and have to be funky all day long. But what REALLY got my attention, TOO LATE, about the Air Force, was my horror when I found out that in Army, if you don't get married, *in SOME instances you might be allowed to move out the barracks at the rank of E5 (which not everyone will get to), but you really aren't guaranteed to be allowed to move out until rank of E6 (and I've been told some soldiers having to remain in the barracks FOR TEN YEARS because it took them that long to make E6!) And I think there are even some places where unmarried soldiers aren't allowed to move out until even E7!* In contrast the Air Force in some cases would let unmarried E3's move out the barracks, while guaranteeing across the board that you'll get to move out by the rank of E4 (with three years time in service) at the latest!* You have people like myself who didn't have this information presented to them in detail like this, and that's understandable..... but what's headscratching is that there are people now who SEE videos like this and KNOW this information beforehand.... but they STILL go "the Air Force is for pussies. I want to join the Army/Marines anyway" which in my opinion is just plain stupid especially when they bitch and complain about having to live in the barracks (and not only deal with how shitty Army barracks can be, but also deal with lack of privacy, constant surprise visits from leadership, etc)!!!

@blacksnow5069 when we were in Iraq in 07, we had gotten there for a 15-month deployment. Well the AF guys found out they got extended for 1 month for a total of a 6 month deployment. One of their junior enlisted threw a fit and almost started crying. He did it in front of us and his NCO grabbed him and proceeded to chew his ass for it knowing we would be there for 15 months. They were really cool and do surf and turf cookouts. These guys would get steak and lobster flown in.

This is all right, but people ONLY look at this and think this is what the military is like. They don’t show the gritty side. Working long hours, pulling 12s then weekend duty too. Yes this all is cool, but should not be the reason why you join. You should join to fight for your country, because there could be a day where you never come back home. And your killed. No one thinks about this. And that’s why everyone fucking hates us because the Air Force attracts the weakest people. “It’s the easiest so I’ll do it” that mentality fucks the Air Force. We have the highest PT fails, no morale, no readiness and woke/lgbt fucking colonels and generals that keep sharing this “equality” bullshit.

Thanks for your service. It's hard retiring from any branch of the military and I think it has to be harder doing it in army/marines because of the extra physical and emotional abuse. But you won't be the first or the last to say "if I could do it over again, I'd have done Air Force (or Coast Guard or Space Force or maybe Navy)" Thing is that there are so many people today who KNOW how much worse the Army and Marines overwhelmingly are, yet they insist on doing Army/Marines anyway then bitch "I should have fucking listened" later.

Promotions are slower but jobs are technical and are applicable outside of the military. Navy jobs are similar. You come out ahead of your peers in other branches. Army would be my next recommendation. Promotions are faster. I had a blast. When I was younger I was said I wouldn't join the military it sucks. My buddy and I walked into a Chairforce DFAC and it was immediate culture shock. No shit, linen napkins, spoons and forks in the proper places, clean uniforms. There we are wrinked uniforms, stained in greese and blood, boots all beat to shit, grimy verge of dreadlock hair. "Dude, did we walk into the officer's mess?" We get our meal, steak, (and it wasnt followed by a BOHICA) and it was the finest meal I have ever eaten in the military. Then I hear this table next to us, airmen talking about what theyre goibg to do that evening. Little MF'rs talking about going to the pool...Im like "hey, tell me more about this...pool." They told us about an Olympic size swimming pool a short walk from the PX. I really didnt believe them, thought they were sending me on a blinker fluid hunt. So I say, "Seriously? Im going to go look for this pool, and if I dont find it, Im going to come find you." (Yeah, I was a little high strung at that point in the deployment.) Kid looked at me like I was a gorilla at the zoo and the glass partition fell out and said, "Yeah it's there. Ill take you guys to it." Sure as shit, they had a freaking pool. Boy did I back the wrong pony. Still got laid and a CIB though...Airborne!

In a lot of cases in the Army you can get single barracks rooms also (you would have to share kitchen and most likely also a bathroom with someone else), unless you go infantry and get some ghetto shit where you have to share bays with several other people and have to do communal showers. The real major deal with the Air Force is that you are guaranteed to be allowed to move out the dorms and get your own place (no more rules and room inspections) after a maximum time of three years, whereas some people in the Army are forced to stay in the barracks for up to ten years. So yeah the Air Force is still the better deal but I'm just adding some detail.

I hear it's actually quite hard to even be accepted into the Air Force. Unless you have a high school diploma saying you were top of your class or a college degree they don't want you. My ex brother inlaw, joined the Air Force, right out of high school. Didn't have the highest grades, but the Vo-Tech classes doing electrical work came in handy. Served 10 years. Was trained on all types of aircraft electrical systems, went to school to get an Electrical engineering degree. When he got out, Boeing picked him up as an electrical engineer. He does field work for them now.

I tried switching over to the Air Force from the Navy when my first enlistment was over and the recruiter to me they don’t even take their own when they get out, this was back in 1989. I don’t know if they still do this but back then, they were extremely picky with who they enlisted plus the Air Force promotions are the slowest of any of the branches. Back then it was quite common for most Air Force enlisted to retire as an E-5 and Congress was wanting to do away with E-5 retirements because it was costing too much to have that many retire but the Air Force complained enough because it would’ve been detrimental and almost wipe out the Air Force if they done that. Some time around 2004 they finally pushed it through and E-5 retirements are a thing of the past now for all branches. I guess the Air Force started promoting more to E-6 just to avoid a hollow force like the Navy had in the ‘70s when junior enlisted were leaving the Navy in droves.

Air Force is the way to go but you have to be smart. It ain’t for dum dums. My brother did eight, got his engineering degree and works for an aerospace firm. I did four and work for the Department of Defense (Army Civilian). Believe me, if you’re smart, DO NOT join the Army - unless you want Army intelligence as an officer. Trust me. I’ve worked for the Army 13 years.

After USAF basic & tech training in the early 70s, I returned home for a visit. My dad (US Army retired) took me to the local American Legion / VFW clubs. When he introduced me to his friends (mostly Army and Marine WW2 / Korea veterans), he proudly introduced me as the "smart one" because I enlisted in the USAF.

@golfery5119 Well he thinks his only other option is Volleyball for college, then ??? after college. I'm thinking the GI bill works for all branches after so he might as well have a good time and learn some adult skills in the AF. Once high-school schools seem to be close to over, then maybe he might consider his options. I just got to make sure he's not tricked into Army/Marines/Coast Gaurd. Best option has got to be AF, worst case Navy, because of the Filipino Mafia there.
