There's a group of young men that have been studying the classic martial arts movies from the 70s and 80s. These young men created a KZfaq channel called martial club. I've watched them for almost 7 years and the youngest member Andy Le was put in the movie Shang Chi as the movies head assassin. Bruce Lee was one of the most uniquely gifted and talented individuals who ever walked the face of the earth. We’re fortunate he lived in an era that could capture him on film. He wasn’t merely a martial artist. He was legitimately a genius. Yet, not only was he a genius, he was also phenomenally charismatic. Bruce had a unique constellation of gifts and all of his gifts became manifest to the world through his inexhaustible spring of determination and drive.

Bruce's stardom and success became a thing because martial arts was not mainstream and was very niche until he put it on the map and popularized it, same thing can be said with Arnold and bodybuilding. Now these things are in the general mainstream consciousness in all kinds of mediums, so the wow and unique factor isn't as prominent as it was. You can still def see a measure of success and notoriety regarding martial arts films and stars but it's not something that would take over the mainstream nor transcend Bruce's "Immortal" legendary status because what Bruce did along with his films and philosophy is just classic with its own special and unique vibe that can't be replicated (only imitated ranging from decent to poorly lol) therefore his appeal will always be around and it remains special and unique.

As usual another very thoughtful video. I believe Bruce was successful because he had a mission. It was not to be an actor in a movie. He wanted to use that medium to spread his message. Would he be a Star today? Who knows but where would we be if there never was a Bruce Lee?

Around the 10:00 mark, you pointed out the thing that I thought when this video popped up. The intangible effect of Bruce's death in his mythos. Bruce went to Hong Kong because he couldn't launch his career (effectively) in Hollywood. He never saw his own worldwide fame. Think of all the actors, musicians or athletes that died young and locked their image as perpetually young, never having over stayed their welcome. He's popular 50 years after his death because he didn't have to do Enter The Dragon 7 at 65.

No martial artist before or since has achieved Bruce's intensity, uniqueness or screen presence. One of the most remarkable and influential men of the 20th century. The man was in a league of his own.

I believe Bruce Lee, would better himself and if Hollywood got in his way, then surely, he would find a way to show the world the perfect way, not to say he wasn't right at perfect anyway!

Most people today still don't understand Bruce Lee . Bruce Lee was a perfectionist. To improve himself everyday . To become the best at everything he does especially in acting 🎭, in health , in fitness, martial artist , in business, and etc.. If Bruce didn't make it in Hollywood, than he would go somewhere to make his fame just like in China . Our society today live on the internet where martial arts is not important as it once was . Alot of the old martial artist are getting too old and dying out . Why would anyone learn to fight when they can fight on the PlayStation, Xbox , PC , and etc ........ In order for Martial Arts, boxing , wrestling , and etc.... to grow , you need superstars . Without them everything would die . Right now i don't see any superstars raising to the top . I do agree , Hollywood is to blame for the lack of martial artists and racism especially towards Asians that i am starting to understand . I would have thought Bruce Lee put an end to racism towards Asians , but i guess i am wrong . Racism is still alive .

It's not even guaranteed that MMA would exist as it does today without the influence of a Bruce Lee in the 1960's. And he's inspired many of us, who earn a living in careers outside of Hollywood. Bruce would be so popular today as a coach, mentor, entrepreneur, and actor in his own or other people's movies, despite his age. He had already established his legacy and would be in high demand all over the world. I believe had he still been living he would even make sequals to Return of the Dragon and Enter The Dragon. If Brandon were also around he would make films with his father. So many possibilities and "what if's" if Bruce were still around.

Bruce Lee's style and footwork was on another level. If he didn't know how to fight I 'd say he knew how to look like the perfect fighter. Most actors can't capture that raw technical expression he portrayed in his films. Heck he even made his own fighting style that appealed to millions while doing it. Wesley Snipes in Blade, Tony Jaa in Ong Bak, and Donnie Yen in Ip man were like tributes to that style of charisma.

If Bruce Lee was around today he would be an old man and BIGGER than ever because of his legendary legacy. Admirers would've LOVED to have met Bruce Lee after the release of Enter The Dragon. And the Game of Death would've been complete.

Prince, I appreciate your ardor in your videos. You raise solid points to the deluge of fluffy arguments on social media. Your closing comment on this video is perhaps the most salient point of all: Bruce Lee became the standard by which all martial artists are compared. But prior to his fame there was no one else and for Lee to become the standard, he would have to (as he said in the Pierre Button interview) just be Bruce Lee. As long as martial arts people strive to meet his abilities as the standard, they will rob us of being the next phenomenon. Steve McQueen was not following someone else’s model to movie stardom. Although James Coburn suggested that Lee use a strategy similar to Clint Eastwood’s to gain leverage into American movies, Lee did not copy Eastwood’s characters. Lee presented himself as if he were the character in the stories of his films. This is cinematic artistry and a total break from the exploitation mode of the Asian film industry of the mid 1900’s. I think your work is perhaps one of the most daring and honest on the subject of Bruce Lee along with Alex Richter’s KFG podcasts. I look forward to more work from you.

In my opinion, the main reason why there cannot be another Bruce Lee is that actors like Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan just do NOT have the screen presence of Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee would tear the screen apart with sheer screen presence!

Many people do not realise how hard was it for Bruce to be popular in the States on those days- as a man of Chinese origin. I think that his passion, his stubbornness and persistence would have helped him achieve the fame, even today. Well, nowadays, the true martial arts movies are disappearing and they are replaced by action movies with martial arts fighting scenes but even despite that, he could make it. Look at the fight in the Mission Impossible 5 ( in the toilet room ) - viewers voted it the best scene in the movie ! It means that audience is still hungry for well-done fight scenes. And by the way, maybe thanks to the Internet, he could have been even more popular now than in the past. Who knows ?

First of all, the interest in martial arts has not faded. It’s increased and I’m pleasantly surprised that the western homegrown art of boxing is taking the martial arts world by storm. You can’t go online without seeing a short featuring boxing footwork tactics heavy bag work or sparring, but I digress. Bruce Lee and martial arts will never die because of African-Americans. It’s not spoken of a lot but I personally feel African-Americans are the reason for the popularity of kung fu films in the past particularly Bruce Lee. I remember back in the day in the 70s those theaters were populated by African-Americans primarily and Latinos let me get respect to them also I’m not saying that white people didn’t like martial arts movies, but it was a staple as far as black entertainment was concerned we’ve always loved anyone who could kick butt in a stylized way, which is why we love Bruce Lee so much no one looked better kicking butt than Bruce Leeand he still be a star today just because of that fact alone to borrow Jim Kelly’s line I don’t think Bruce would worry about it because he’d be too busy looking good

I'd argue Bruce would be a BIGGER star today for the same reasons he became a star back then: He was someone who TRANSCENDED his professions with a personality and vision and message that connected with EVERYONE. The things he said and did in his lifetime, the stories about him, have only grown with time like modern-day mythology, much of it through word of mouth, so had he access to today's technology and social media, he'd be all over the frigging place as an influencer extraordinaire, his postings frequently going viral because what he says and does has real substance. It has MEANING. In a pop culture where shallowness and shock value and the flavor of the moment is king-where people do whatever they can to pimp their latest project, however awful it might be-Bruce's wisdom, insight, honesty, integrity, articulateness, and overall realness would make him stand out more than ever. Seriously, how many athletes or actors or celebrities are considered great thinkers, people to be listened to over and over again and who affect how others think about the world and live their lives? I like Donnie Yen as much as the next guy, but do I look up his interviews as sources of inspiration and counsel? Is the latest MMA champion a role model beyond being able to whoop ass, and will they be remembered for anything other than whooping ass? And aside from the variety and depth of things Lee offered to the public, he knew how to market the hell out of it. His style wasn't just visible in his physicality and speech and clothing and filmmaking; it was in his handwriting, business cards, training equipment, the plaques that hung in his school, you name it. In today's world where so many celebs are looking to put out their own line of whatever, I could see him dominating department stores and online sales as much as he did the box office (can anyone say, "Jun Fan Cologne: The Scent of the Dragon," lol?). And what about all the books and videos and online courses he could release on martial arts, fitness, philosophy, self-help, self-marketing, acting, filmmaking, etc.? I imagine the Lee logo/brand becoming one of the most recognized and respected on the planet, because as aggressive as he was about promoting and selling himself and whatever he did, he was equally aggressive about everything meeting his ridiculously high standards. And were he faced with situations like when Warner Bros wanted to cut all the philosophy from Enter the Dragon, I'm quite sure he'd weaponize social media to get his way, making the tools of the 21st century part of his JKD arsenal. Oh, and then there's the fact that he could've run for governor of California or president. I know who I'D vote for.

That dubbing thing I don’t know too much about, but with podcasting live streaming and other Internet stuff that I don’t know too much about he wouldn’t have any problems making his presence known or trending as they call it today. Bruce Lee used the technology of his day to his advantage, if he was around today, it stands the reason he would use the technology. We have now to his advantage as well. As far as casting is concerned, Bruce Lee possessed that intangible intuitive cannot be taught, but definitely recognizable thing called charisma. There was something about him that was magnetic. That article is hypothetical considering Bruce paved the way...there has been martial artist post bruce lee...the 80s and 90s were the prime of martial arts movies the Chuck Norris, Steven Sagals, Jackie Chans, Van damme, Jet Li ..everyone reached their prime but the success just wasn't on the same level as Bruce...look at Michael jordan he has played basketball in over 20yrs and all the superstars post Jordan era still didn't reach his overall level of success

There are endless questions / possibilities of what could or would have happened if bruce was still alive today. It makes you wonder how many more movies bruce would have achieved to this day, how many more students worldwide, and if he could have prevented his son Brandon been shot or murdered on set. It truly makes you wonder how many Hollywood actors would also be students of bruce, he truly was the most electrifying dynamic human being on the planet, both mentally / physically. He was light years ahead of anybody else, and you can bet your bottom dollar, Quentin (Tarantino) certainly would not have portrayed bruce the way he did in (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.) Although Brad Pitt refused the original screen play to beat up Bruce Lee to a pulp for 5 mins, Tarantino was forced to rewrite the scene due to Brad Pitts refusal, which i found very admiral and compelling. Beerdy doesn't even know who Dan Inosanto is, so that tells you all you need to know about how much he knows about Bruce Lee. The big problem Bruce would have today is that there is no Hong Kong gongfu movie industry to gain fame in, but given Bruce's personality he may well have found a way around that problem. The ability of computer graphics to fake fight scenes is an even bigger challenge, such that martial skill doesn't even matter that much anymore, but Bruce was more than just a skilled martial artist. He had been acting since childhood and could have pushed into the film industry through acting, stunt work, choreography, writing, directing, ...... And speaking of Donnie Yen, I have his mother's (Bow Sim Mark) WuShu books from the '70's with a young (9 yrs. old maybe) Donnie demonstrating forms in the photos. I remember thinking "look at that kid" and then years later seeing him in the Yip Man movie(s) thinking "look at that kid"! Congrats Donnie!

Bruce Lee had such charisma which contributed to his legend, the X factor, a look, he was cool. Plus he was so good. The Hollywood A list chose bruce as their instructor, as even.they knew he was the man, so the martial arts world certainly did too, they did say bruce was the best innfact.. Bruce being the no1 martial artist, you'd think that would be enough. But bruce wanted to be a film star too, and he mixed in high circles, ie mcqueen, coburn, polanski etc So, I don't even think a Donnie yen has all the ingredients that bruce had. You get the feeling bruce could do anything he wanted to do, hed find a way. Bruce became a star despite hollywood trying their best for so long to stall bruce, but the public idolised bruce.

Movies don’t protect their main actors as much as this reporter wants to suggest last time I checked Hollywood’s A Lister, Tom Cruise, goes to great length to perform death defying stunts.
