Nothing makes you appreciate a good stealth game like a bad stealth game. It’s fantastic when a title strikes that perfect balance between AI that feels natural and intelligent while still being consistent and winnable. Horizon forbidden west is the most recent one I’ve played that struck a good note in the stealth play. I liked how stealth takedowns aren’t undetectable they’re just more quiet.

I 100% agree with the Alien Isolation point. I had to stop playing the game because I got to a point where I died restarted and the Alien would come and kill me in no joke 10 seconds before I could even figure out where to go.

Concerning #4 (Alien: Isolation), I totally agree. I ended up rage quitting after getting soft locked in a small area where the xeno literally wouldn't leave. It kept rubber banding around me so I was completely trapped. Every time I tried to leave cover it would immediately know and come running. So frustrating.

I'd add the last Tenchu game on Wii. That one committed two unforgivable crimes for the series: it took away the ability to fight when detected, & it banked on shoddy Wii motion controls.

I had the same problem with Alien Isolation that I'd later have with the Resident Evil 2 Remake: being pursued by a stalking creature is scary until it becomes frustrating. Then you start figuring out the AI tricks and it just becomes annoying. It's patently clear that the monster is always in your vicinity and not only when it'd be justified. Both games would be much better if the monster behavior was more interesting. Say, they could be skulking around the whole map, whether you were close or not, but they could be privy to your location if you make a lot of noise. You could be encouraged to be stealthier this way, because engaging with enemies would surely be heard from far away. But no. Sometimes I shoot a dozen zombies and Mr. X is nowhere to be seen, but I'm trying to solve a puzzle and he won't go away. At some point it becomes eye-rolling.

I don’t think FNAF Security Breach has terrible stealth Jules. The stealth in FNAF Security Breach is great as Security Breach is the first game in the FNAF franchise where you aren’t kept in an office. And each of the three corrupted Glamrock Animatronics are each difficult but are able to be overcomed. Monty is the slowest of the three, so you can outrun him, but in his boss fight, he is able to leap great distances. Roxanne Wolf is the fastest of the three, but she can be stunned before she becomes destroyed, but in her boss fight she becomes blind so you got to sneak by her and trick her into ramming into stuff so you can progress. And Glamrock Chica isn’t the fastest or the slowest of the four, but just like Roxanne Wolf, she can be stunned. But in her boss fight when she becomes ruined, you don’t have a cue as to where she is because you took her voice box, so you got to keep moving. Again, I think the stealth in Security Breach is great because you got to adapt to each of the three corrupted Animatronics like you do in previous games.

I regard the Hitman games outside of Absolution as sandbox games with freedom to explore and interact with the locations. That's the real identity of the Hitman games and what makes them great. However you can play most Hitman games like they are stealth games too.

I bought Thief with my PS4 alongside TLoU. Think I played about 20 mins of Thief and have never gone back to it, however have sank so many hours into Dishonoured 1 & 2 for full stealth runs and some high chaos bloody runs.

I'm glad someone finally said it out loud...alien: isolation sucks. I quit playing after 3 or 4 hours because everything just got so frustrating. The first few times the alien shows up is scary but it loses it's horror powers very quickly and the save system was awful.

I am right there with you Jules. I bought the collectors edition of Left Alive, and I don't even think I finished the second level. Hell, I didn't even know they made a patch to make the game kind of maybe payable.

Thief 2014 was my first of the series, and I'm glad for that. I enjoyed it, the older games are obviously better, but I had no expectations or context.

oh yes, "Rerez" once did an entire video about how crappy "left alive" is. it also has a crappy "crafting/upgrade" system that is greatly hampered by your VERY small inventory, which ALSO got a patch later!

There's a game I think he should have added. Vampire Rain, now I loved the idea of the game and mostly enjoyed the story. But the fact that it was a stealth/shooter didn't do it any favors. All enemies could one shot you, they would track you if you managed to run from them, and you couldn't really kill them. Occasionally you got items in the game that let you stealth kill some enemies but the item is consumed in one use. And the one weapon that actually killed the enemies in one or two shots you didn't get until towards the end. Again, fun concept of a vampire shooter, but could've used a little more in the actual gameplay.

You forgot one, there is a game called "Dark" this is how horrible the game stealth is, you can't have a pacifist route, you have to kill the guards for exp to gain and use new powers. There is no way to hide the bodies, while you can "hide" the bodies, you can't really hide them, if a guard see the body (even if it's just the body part) they will know that you're there and know your location. When a guard see's you, they all see you. There are times when a guard see's you but don't somehow, and other times when they shouldn't see you, but somehow do. It's also funny how when they made the game they had a distaste for Twilight, because the game is supposed to be around the origin of vampire, but made a game that has a story that doesn't make sense. Fun fact I want to also add in, the Left Alive game, it's from a game series called Front Mission where you piolet a mech called Wanzers, but for some reason instead of spending sometimes in the mech or most of the time in the mech, you, out of playing 3 different characters only pilot the mech twice (I believe it was twice, I just know the first time you get to use it, it's a broken Wanzer that can't walk and only has one functional arm).

What about games with amazing stealth? Sure you need good cover and the right outfits/potions to help you out but I think the BOTW/TOTK has some stellar sneaking parts that can make avoiding/starting combat more than just durable. Sometimes, if done right, it can be hilarious fun. And what did we say about playing with your toys during work hours, Psy? Nothing? Alright, just don't hit anything you care about.

The only parts of 'Alien Isolation' that I thought was hair pulling dull, was the parts with the bots. I think it comes down to game design choices. You have one alien after you (for the most part) but you can have multiple bots after you. This applies to humans as well. The bots are so stupid. They toned down their ability to find you because there will be so many. So you have this great enemy in the Xenomorph, and then this terrible enemy in the bots.

Sticking with the subject, how about 8 worst-placed stealth sections. Nothing worse than playing a great action game and then suddenly you're not able to use any of your normal abilities and you instantly fail if you get spotted even once.

Allen isolation didn't have a bad stealth mechanic. If you were sitting around that's on you for not moving. Because of the way the ai works it'll hover off you aren't moving. If you're continuously moving and staying out of sight the xenomorph is almost always playing catch up.

The thing that I hated of Hitman absolution the most was the disguise mechanic. To me, still make no sense to this day. In a mission you can dress as a total special force operator with a full balaclava on it and your "supposed colleague", realize immediately that you're not one of them even though you didn't say a word. For the rest, I thought the game was cool but this mechanic frustrated me so much that I dropped the game half way.

When I first saw the title, I wondered if Thief for PS4 would even be remembered enough for it to make this list. If Thief hadn't came out early in the PS4 life cycle, I don't anyone would have bought it. Not only was the stealth garbage and running through levels was more efficient/fun, the world design to get to the levels may have been the worst in video gaming.

How can you talk about bad stealth and not mention Assassins Creed 1. They gave you so much to work with to sneak around and get behind people even to hide after the kill, but as soon as you lock on to a target to go for a stealth kill, the target immediately knows you are there and just turns to look at you.

Wouldn't a list of 8 stealth games where stealth actually WORKS be easier/shorter to make? Any game I have played where stealth is even an option, has you able to do ONE stealth kill after which every single enemy knows your exact location.

I'm not looking for "revolution" or "innovation" in stealth: I want it to work, and make sense... that's it... and most fail at even that...
