A sewing machine is quite honestly one of those things that can completely change and transform your night immediately! Using it to tailor your clothes boosts your confidence and the way you present yourself to the world more than anything else.
BUT that being said, there are a few tips and tricks that you want to know that will save you a TON of headaches down the road. The first one is to cut your threads when you're finished sewing! When you sew a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch you're going to have some extra threads on there, yeah cut them. I used to just leave them on my shirts like an idiot and it looked stupid.
The next two both involve the take-up lever. It's that little hook inside of your machine, and you want to make sure that your thread is pulled through it. You also want to make sure it's at it's highest position when you first start your stitch. Sure wish I would have known those in the beginning.
You also want to make sure you turn your machine the correct way. There is a knob on the back that will move the needle manually when you turn it. You want to make sure that you only turn it towards you and not away from you.

“You’re going to develop an addiction”. I think you’re right… I started off with hemming the pants leg of one pants. Im planning to do all my pants now. Right now I’m tailoring the width of the pants’ legs. And I’ve messed up and I don’t even care, im starting all over. Honestly this is a hobby (and necessity) I might enjoy a lot- and save me a lot of time and money from tailors. As a short, chubby guy that never finds clothes that fits me, thank you sir!

I started teaching myself to sew about 3 years ago, by watching KZfaq videos. Your videos by far are the most informative and entertaining. I'm still learning tidbits from you - to the point that I have enough confidence to start tailoring my husband's and son's clothes. 👍

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and share with the world. Excellent job with the editing too! I'm sure you spent hours upon hours just to post one of your videos. Your efforts are recognized and appreciated. I received a very old feather light Singer sewing machine that didn't work. I took it apart and fixed it, but didn't know how to use it. At 53 years old having never sewn before, I decided to try to tailor my own dress shirts. I never had a shirt or pants tailored. I'm am amazed at how much better I feel wearing a shirt that actually fits! Thanks to you! I am now watching all of your videos to learn to tailor my pants as well. Your videos have given me confidence to try it on my own. Thank you again. Please post more videos! You have a great and infectious video personality.

I have done many of these. Especially the removing the thread to change colors. The vintage machines rock! I never knew about turning the dial the wrong way. Sometimes my videos go over 10 minutes, reason why is I see a lot of new sewist say that the videos aren't in detail enough. They show a and c, but not b.

I worked in a jail Tailor shop, Tie your thread to the thread youre changing, pull it right through the needle. No need to re-thread a sewing machine ever. More important when using 4 spools on a serger with more moving arms and such, Still a time saver.

I prefer to grab the thread just above the eye when removing. Less chance of bending the needle. (though mainly because it is a a lot easier to grab)

Hi, another tip on buying machines, want a new one, keep track of the price on new machines, approximately every decade or so companies change models, price goes real low as they get to end of run, around 89 or 90 I bought my 1st machine after a decade of sewing by hand. I got a singer, semi industrial for $300, was originally a $1200 machine, a few years back I treated me to the nerve racking process of facing a serger, call singer after watching price drop on a 5 thread & asked if the machine was close to the end of run, paid $430 + TX for a machine that a year eariler had a more Tham $1200 price tag,.. patients & time people 😀

Jo-Ann's is open here in Southern California. I get most of my sewing things at Walmart but Jo-Ann's had a better selection of needles and I went there for my needles. By the way, I was visiting my daughter the other day and she asked me to repair a skirt she had which had a hole in the seam. My machine happen to have the correct black thread already loaded in it from when I tapered some jeans. In a few minutes I had the whole repaired. She asked me how long it took me to fix it. I told her that once I had everything set up, maybe 4 seconds. It actually took a bit longer because I put an extra straight Stitch and to make sure it wouldn't come apart. MD out!!

My guy, I was a sewing zealot when I was in the Marines. Uniforms weren't cheap, so we used old ones to patch new-ish ones with hand stitched needled and thread. How I wished I could have used a sewing machine, but those don't travel well. The point I'm trying to make is that if you couldn't sew as a Marine, you got made fun of! After binge watching 8 of your videos, I'm about to move my wife's sewing machine out tot the garage to put next to my power tools and go crazy on the 20+ dress shirts that don't fit me well!

Question: What are some of the sewing machines you would advise a beginner to get? I am overwhelmed with the amount of options available. And all the accessories, etc... I think some of the brands we have here are Singer, Brother and Juki. Thank you for the awesome videos. Looking forward to the next one. Stay safe.

Hey SD, would you consider changing "hacks/tricks" for straight up tips or just advice? Feels a bit disingenuous (click baity) to call these hacks/tricks. Either way, I appreciate the fact that you tend to mega-newbies with your videos. I got started before watching your stuff, but your videos have made a big impact on the way I feel about sewing. Also, will you consider teaching how to make things from scratch? Could start with a cotton singlet or pyjama pants
