Learning how to use a sewing machine and using it to tailor all of my clothes was probably one of the smartest things I've ever done. But I made a lot of mistakes a long the way, and I want to help you avoid making the same ones.

taylors chalk is for tracing patterns onto fabric to cut out, it would also come in handy for drawing out dart placement, its a tool for accuracy, you still always want to use pins to keep your fabric in place especially if its a stretchy drape fabric that will move a lot when you sew it. Pins also help me keep my seam where it is supposed to be rather than too far into the seam allowance or too far past it.

Yes my favorite use for tailor's chalk (or a tailor's pencil, in my case) is to draw very nice straight lines to sew on. It's so much better than trying to connect the dots between pins. But still use those pins. They make a difference.

I don't think it's too late to put a zig-zag stitch on your favorite ON jeans man. Also, pinking shears can be your best friend.

I second the pinking shears. That was the go to before sewing machines had the zig zag capability.

Hey another video suggestion, do a complete series of videos on all of your machines. I have moms, I couldn't find any videos anywhere to tell me how to use it. Fortunately I found the manual under the accessories. Also can you take a shirt that you tailored to small, and increase the size. Specifically in the shoulders. Thanks

@@StylishDTailors Hi D ! I'm fairly new and without any sewing machine at the moment. I watched dress shirt, dress pants and suit jacket videos. I'm thinking to buy a ''guinea pig' from my local charity shop and experiment on that, as I have a fair amount of clothes which don't fit after I lost quite a few kilos. I hope you have a fab weekend.

Is there a reason you couldn't run a zigzag stitch beside your straight stitch, then trim off the unwanted material after? (Roughly 1/8" beside the zigzag) Would it hold together as well as an overlap zigzag on the seam allowance?
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors Жыл бұрын
Because you want the zigzag to overlap the very edge of the raw edge. If you cut it it would just be close to the edge.

You could do an overcast stitch instead of a zigzag stitch on the edge too and it would hold up even better.

True, solid tip!
@Febiza919
@Febiza919 Жыл бұрын
For folks that have the most basic machines or some vintage ones with only straight and zig-zag stitches, those tips are useful. But I would encourage everybodyyyy to buy that cheap 20-32 piece presser foot pack on Amazon and play around with it. The overcast foot, knit foot, roller foot and zipper feet alone are 100% worth it. Once you get comfortable enough to play with your tshirts and knit fabrics, those feet are so time saving.

Alpha M once mentioned about the difference between tailored and tight. He referred to the latter as looking like a sausage. Concerning not using proper tools, I have a confession that I use extra fine point permanent markers whenever I make stuff. I accidentally measured wrong when I was sewing an ascot, and had a line on my work (which meant me having to keep the "bad copy" instead of sell it. And part of me still hasn't learned, being I still use markers whenever I am making something. Hope this part made someone laugh.)
