I remember that originally in the books Katherine is named Katherine von Swartzschild ("von" is the German form of "of", which points out a loyal title) and comes from Germany. Wouldn't know why they would've changed that if not because of Nina's origin.

she basically changed her name because Nina Dobrov is way easier to remember then Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva. And thats what keeps her up, you wont talk much about a Person whos name you cant remember...and not everyone is fluent in Bulgarian or similar languages

Nina is short of Nikolina. It's Konstatínova not Konstantinóva. It's Dóbreva not Dobréva. I'm bulgarian, trust me.

And Konstantinova is her mom's last name as I understand so she actually didn't really change anything. No star in Hollywood is called by their full name. Usually we omit their middle names so it's the same here. And DobrevA is a feminine form. Her dad is Dobrev but she is Dobreva because she is a woman but in English-speaking countries they are two different names so you have to change it. So she really just adjusted her name, not changed it.

IrinNovy Konstantinova is actually her fathers first (personal, I'm not sure how it's called in English) name (His name is probably Konstantin, which becomes Konstantinova), but basically - yes, she adjusted her name....it's already difficult enough for foreigners to pronounce slavonic names, so she just made it easier for them... :)

Her real name is Nina. It's just a short way of saying Nikolina. For example, I'm Russian and on my birth certificate my name is Nadezhda, but you can also say Nadia. Nadezhda Pavlovna Rukodaynaya.

nope not a coincidence. others have replied but I just wanted to put it clearly. originally, in the books, she was Katherine von Swartzschild, a German. in the tv show, they purposely changed Katherine's origins to Katerina Petrova from Bulgaria. it makes sense to use Nina's fluency in Bulgarian in the show. and they chose Petrova as the surname because it's a very common last name in Bulgaria. also, Bulgarian surnames follow the gender. as a female, the surnames end in -ova/-eva like Petrova, Dobreva. as a male, the surnames would then be -ov/-ev like Petrov and Dobrev.

Hey I just wanted to add that Nina is always what we call someone named Nikolina in Bulgaria. I think she made a good choice with the name though, it sounds really good as Nina Dobrev and it's easier for remembering if you're not familiar with our the Cyrilic Alphabet. Oh and btw she is so amazing, her attitude is the best thing about her.

@@heather9526 Not my friend, on the contrary, it is the Russians who use the Bulgarian alphabet. It is called Cyrillic and it is exactly Bulgarian and not Russian. The Russians use the Bulgarian alphabet and not the other way around!

Inform yourself more before doing this kind of videos, because Nina is her short name coming from Nikolina. I'm Bulgarian and my name is Elena, but people call me Elly, or Lena. All in all she didn't change her name. In her identity documents it's written "Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva". She just wants her name to be easier to remember. The same has done Mila Kunis (Ucranian). Bulgarian and Ukranian share the same alphabet, so Mila is her short name which is coming from Milena (in Bulgarian we also have Milena). She didn't change her name either, just easier for English speakers to remember foreign names. :).

That depends on the language she's trying to spell it. For example in English it's a nightmare, but Bulgarian is a phonetic language, making spelling kinda pointless. Since in Slavic languages each letter has only one sound, spelling is literally saying the same thing but slower. We don't even have a word for "spelling" and it was quite hard for my English teacher to explain to us the meaning of spelling when we were kids learning English.
