◼︎In this video, I explored more of Sofia, Bulgaria with my friend Sullivan in search of some traditional authentic Bulgarian food. the place to go to was the pedestrian street as recommended by a local friend. while on the street, we came across a friend busking and playing his Portuguese guitar that we have jammed with every day that i have been here. after listening to him for a while, it was time to continue hunting for food.
On this pedestrian street, we saw lots of different kinds of restaurants that caught our eye, but all I wanted was something from this country. We then found a restaurant that had Moussaka, a dish that was recommended with a beer. Food rating was 9/10

neither greek nor traditional. You can find it allover balkans, middle east and even in c.europe. The word is arabic . The Greek version of mousaka with bessamel was made by Tselementes about 100 years ago.

For the people saying that Musaka is a Greek food. Just think that we are neighboring countries, we even were under the same rule for centuries, of course we'll have similarities, especially in the kitchen, and that goes for most of the countries in the region. This is a channel of a guy traveling the world and discovering food and instead of celebrating the things we as well find out about our neighbors that we both share, you are trying to gatekeep Musaka, it just seems a little contradictory to me

Should be mentioned on the Greek videos tho. Same as we also eat pasta in Greece but you should mention pasta on a video in Italy not Greece right?

@@bewnik9468 I think pasta is all over the world and most probably is considered Italian everywhere, and that must be because of later adoption. While, as I understand it, Greece and Bulgaria both consider Musaka as traditional.

Good lord, moussaka is an arab dish adopted by the Balkans. The most popular version in the West is the modern Greek version. The Bulgarian version is different than the Greek version, which has nothing to do with the Turkish version etc.

Not with eggs. Bulgarian and Yugoslav is with eggs and without potatoes, Romanian is with celery and cauliflower and they call it Musaca, the Greek Mousakàs is with Potatoes, often lamb and Bechamel sauce. Also there are different variations in turkish and arab cousine. But the greek one is the best, at least most foreigners say so, because of the potatoes and the bechamel i think.

It's not Greek, it never was Greek. Moussaka belongs to no one. No one knows who invented it. Bulgarian and Greek Moussaka are extremely different. And also, the Greek Moussaka isn't the real one. It was literaly created in the 1920s by Nikolaus Tselementes. Greece had Moussaka before, but it was different that what we now knows as „Greek Moussaka“ and what you call „real Moussaka“. Even though it is probably the last created version out of all.

Let me tell you what are Greek traditional foods, to avoid something like this happening again (unless you were going for Greek food on an other country)... Mousaka (fried zucchini potato eggplant, with mints meat, and bechamel sause and cheese) Pastitio (spaghetti like pasta with wholes, mints meat, bechamel sause and cheese) Giouvetsi (rise type pasta, with beef on tomato sause), Katsiki or arni stin souvla (goat or lamp on a spit, the whole animal), pita souvlaki/gyro, gemista (can be: stuffed tomato, peppers, onions, zucchini), ntolmadakia, (stuffed vine leaves), yiaprakia (stuffed Cabbage), Fried Kalamari, tiganites (fried pastry), gigantes (very large beens, on tomato sauce), Psarosoupa (fish soup), loukoumades (ball shaped fry pastry with honey, cinnamon and walnuts), (they are more i know but if you change their name they loose their Greek origin, like soutzoukakia, Kokkinisto, kotosoupa, fasolakia, spetsofai).. Now.. they way more localised foods that are traditional only in that area, like bougatsa from thessaloniki you ate on an other video of yours.. Try avoid controversial foods to avoid YT roasting.. (like baklava, Greek say its Greek, Turkish say is Turkish, all though there is the book XIV of Deipnosophistae that contains a dish called kopte sesamis (similar in stracture) way before ottoman empire was a thing, that said it remains controversial)

Only in Greece can you try Greek moussaka. In Bulgaria you can try Bulgarian, I guess in Turkey you can try Turkish. Before you declare any food as Greek, I would ask you to present the recipe in ancient Greek, so that we can see that it is only yours. There is nothing more ridiculous than such culinary patriotism.

Do you understand how stupid this Greek fanaticism is? Everyone in the Balkans eats moussaka. This is not a Greek dish, it is not Bulgarian or Turkish. No one has a patent on a culture or food that is common to a region. There is no such thing as "real" moussaka. The fanaticism with which Greece claims history, culture and food in the Balkans is simply pathetic. Obviously, Turks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Serbs and others in the Balkans are not at all interested in Greek claims and do not even take you seriously.

The “Greek” variant you refer to was invented in the 1920’s. Bulgarian Moussaka has been around for way longer than that, and the name is derived from an Arabic word.
