At its simplest, weed management just comes down to the three R's of weed management: remove, reduce, and reclaim. If we take care of these 3 R's on a regular basis, we have no trouble keeping the weeds at bay. Here's a look at 8 strategies we use to apply our 3 R’s of weed management while still helping our vegetable crops get well established at the same time.
0:52 Strategy 1 Remove Weeds By Hand
3:06 Strategy 2 Prepare Beds Without Tilling
4:15 Strategy 3 Switch to Drip Irrigation
5:22 Strategy 4 Start Crops As Transplants
6:20 Strategy 5 Top Beds With Organic Mulch
9:26 Strategy 6 Cover Beds With Landscape Fabric
11:51 Strategy 7 Grow Crops Under Cover
14:39 Strategy 8 Create a Stale Seed Bed
21:14 Which strategy is best for you?
One of these strategies won't solve all of your weed management problems, but when you start to use them together, they become even more impactful. Intelligent weed management is just one step on the journey to much easier vegetable growing. If you’d like to join me on this path, check out my free workshop to learn about the other strategies we employ to help us grow our own year round supply of vegetables with ease. The setup, maintenance, and timing of drip irrigation systems is covered in depth in my Seed to Table course. www.vegetableacademy.com/course. I don't have any public videos on that subject yet, but thanks for the suggestion Darren.

Great video! Thanks for this info, especially for a fellow Canadian gardener (Steinbach, MB, Canada zone 3)! What type of landscape fabric are you using?🤔😁

My mulch ( pine bark) even over plastic seems to feed the weeds that land on it. This is outside the beds themselves, with no dirt under the mulch. The mulch does get wet, when it rains and creates a perfect feeding ground for weeds and cherry tomato plants that drop out of my beds.I am worried about using fabric over my raised bed soil, as I am worried about drainage. If the sun does not hit my soil the soil in the beds will remain wet, causing possible root rot. I would like to use this method if I could keep my soil from retaining too much water.
