Nice video but the part of "8 weeks old ready to give me endless eggs" is misleading -- I raised thousands of chickens and can tell you, pullets (female chicken under 1 yr old) don't start laying until around 16-20 weeks. Also a lil extra tidbit, pullets / hens are born with all the eggs they'll ever lay in their lifetime.
@catmenot7143Ай бұрын
Could you explain that last part?

I also felt something was wrong. Thanks for confirming.
@RKNancyАй бұрын
Yeah, happens with female humans as well.
@noahwright3nАй бұрын
@@catmenot7143 Had to do a lil research to find technical term, but they're born with all their chicken ova which is basically the yolk that'll become eggs. In your breeds that are most prominent egg layers such as golden comets, they lay upwards of 300 eggs a year. Chickens generally lay eggs once every 26 hours.
@noahwright3nАй бұрын
@@catmenot7143 Furthermore, you get most egg production up to 3-4 years, after that, it starts to die down.

Purebred Ameraucanas actually lay blue eggs, 100% of the time. If your hatchery spells it "americana" or any other wrong way, you will probably get Easter eggers, a breed that is a cross between ameraucanas and other chickens. Also if your ameraucana lays green eggs, you know that it is an easter egger.
@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
If memory serves, don't true ameraucana have greenish or slate leg coloring? I believe they are only recognized in BBS and white currently (aside from project colors still in the works). I'm not even sure white is one actually.

@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
That's common with many breeds. Usually only specific egg production breeds will lay as early as 16-20 weeks (I've never heard of 8 weeks). It's also very common for pullets (1st year hens) to lay small and inconsistent eggs. It's usually the next spring when things even out and get consistent.

They reach adult size in 2 months? That's amazing!😲 Are they a really tiny chicken breed like Silkie chickens?
@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
No chicken breed reaches maturity (and laying age) by 8 weeks. Specific egg production breeds can lay earlier than many others, but it's still the 16-20 week range at best. Easter Eggers (true Ameraucana were used to create these, but they're a "mutt" breed) are full sized chickens. I would say they're dual purpose, they don't lay as much as a egg production breed nor as large as meat breeds, they're somewhere in the middle being the best of both worlds for the average homestead.
@agiesafitri7 күн бұрын
do you clean the coop daily?
@damagedvixen1779Ай бұрын
I have a white Americana and a Silkie rooster that have decided they’re gonna be Monogamous and they are the ONLY pair that can lay fertilized eggs that survive past being chicks. They have 2 kids that are grown and survived and the only reason I know is that the Mother is my only green egg layer and the Father is my only five toed rooster. I’ve also seen the Hen scream at and attack any other rooster that tries to mount her and the silkie is too short to reach the other Hens to breed… which is kinda funny because if the Americana sees him try she gets mad at him and he has to hide from her in a broody box for awhile. Can honestly say I never expected that from chickens, I’ve just accepted that they’re weird.
@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
Birds are funny. I had a call drake (1lb duck breed) decide that his mate was going to be an african/toulouse mixed goose (decently large goose breed). He enjoyed breeding her head when she went into the dog house to lay everyday. She was heart broken when we lost him.

We have 23 chickens at home, with four Easter Egger chicks who are, I think, almost two months old, so they should be ready to go outside on their own soon, when we're confident that the older chickens won't kill them.
@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
If you keep yours enclosed then I would recommend starting introductions with a fence between each group (a crate within the pen works). Chickens are naturally going to fight some when first mingling to establish hierarchy, but we do slow to try and avoid an all out bloodbath. If you free range, then things usually go much smoother since the newbies have the space to back down and retreat from a fight.

As a vegetarian I was nervous about the ending of this video 😅 I’ve always wanted to raise chickens but I live in a big city (Austin TX). I’d love to learn more about doing this without moving in a rural area
@ErdriedDeirdreАй бұрын
First you have to find out how many chickens you can legally keep within city limits. If it's like Virginia you have to keep at least 6 chickens. You can't have less than 6 because they don't want people keeping them as pets. There's a lot of great videos on KZfaq about what you need to start keeping your own chickens! Even which breeds you might want since some breeds are great for eggs and some are better for meat, and some are good for both.😊

Our chickens have hatched some chicks this year. Despite having 3 breeds of hens, only 1 breed is getting lucky to have their eggs hatched by our orphintons. Our turkey necks, so we have 5 one week and a half old chicks with a new one who's like 3 days old. The baby has a bit of catch up to do and will sometimes just stand and cry. I tried picking the little one up last night when the baby was doing that, and 1 of the older chicks ran up and was pecking my hand. I think that was a good response to get, the older chick protecting the younger. Our hens haven't quite figured out how to raise chicks so they get the ones they hatch for a day and a night while they still have a yolksack to sustain them and then we bring them inside until they're about a couple months old and then start introducing them back into the flock. We still have a broody hen, so we might get another or more chicks in a week or 2 so we'll stick them in with the current chicks and just wait a couple more weeks to start moving them outside.
@WobblesWattles26 күн бұрын
Orpingtons are usually fairly good parents, but it's not uncommon for first time setters to be utterly confused and get it wrong. We always set up our first time broody in a separate pen to give them the best shot at getting it right. We also don't let them get more than a 2nd try at it (usually their 2nd year); from there we simply label them as poor mothers and take the chicks (plus, we won't let them hatch their own eggs to get away from that issue).
@Bethany34226 күн бұрын
@WobblesWattles to be fair to the hens, our current egg boxes aren't set up to let chicks get back in when the hen goes back to it. We're also fighting fleas in the coop so they're the big killer to tiny newborn chicks. Im going to grow a tansy patch next year and start throwing in sprigs to help with that. And probably make a spray. My dad had let this one hen keep 2 of the 3 she hatched and she was doing decently, but between the high box and the fleas we lost those 2. We now also have orpington chicks in the mix.
