The tech was initially developed by RCA beginning in 1964 and took a ridiculous 17 years to come to market! While I think it would have been amazingly successful if had been released in the 60's or 70's, by the time it was available to consumers, it had been superseded by recordable tape formats like VHS and Betamax and the disc based DiscoVision/LaserDisc...which was much more advanced and had much better picture quality. I recommend the Technology Connections video about this format for more information: • The CED: RCA's Very La... )
23. Promo for "Bret Maverick" and "Barbara Mandrell & The Mandrell Sisters"
24. Lincoln Mercury
25. Betty Crocker SuperMoist Cake Mix and Creamy Deluxe Frosting

Colgate Winter Fresh…Kids fighting over toothpaste. This is like something you’d see Rod and Todd Flanders on the Simpsons doing.

0:37 - I have seen enough horror movies to know this goat’s reaction to Cousin Howard spending the summer is a sign that evil is afoot. Sure, he wins you over with M&M’s, but before the summer’s over, Cousin Howard’s wielding an ax and singing nursery rhymes in a creepy tone…

He does remind me a lot of Damian from The Omen II now that I think about it, the plot of which involves Damian living with his Uncle and cousin... :Omen theme starts playing:

I was kind of hoping that R. Lee Ermy’s first acting role would have been Little House. I would have loved to see him share the screen with Michael Landon.

I had an RCA CED machine in working order til about 12 years ago. I remember renting a machine when I was a kid in the early 80s. I felt like living in the future, my friends AND their families wanted to come watch.

I always get a joy seeing old tech getting a moment in the commercials. I think Techmoan did a review on those ancient laserdiscs a long while back. They seem so different from the 90s equivalent you manually pull out of the sleeve and into the Laserdisc player or Pioneer LaserActive(if you're rich and owned one with the Turbografx and Genesis/Sega CD add-on).

They're not laserdiscs as no laser was involved, and actually came to market AFTER laserdisc. They used a stylus cartridge similar to a vinyl record.

I'm almost certain I tried opening a pack of Breath Savers just like in the commercial only to have them fly all over the place.

5:24 - Prince Spaghetti Day…When the Flying Spaghetti Monster visits and gives gifts to all the good boys and girls. I asked for an Atari that year, but the cheap bastard left underwear. I even left garlic bread for the guy! Never believed in him after that…

"Buy your friends with M&Ms" man isn't that true, that kid looked like he didn't want to even give them away! That Fresh Start detergent I remember as we always used it at home, it came in a clear bottle and it was always fascinating to see all the blue powder right from the outside!

M&M’s- Interesting to see how very generic the packaging looked for this candy before they started using those famous characters. Colgate- Somehow I doubt that toothpaste would be something that kids would be impressed by, be eager to try, and fight over like the kids in this commercial did.

My grandmother had the CED player. Only thing I remember watching on it was Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown. When I first heard people talk about “Laserdisc”, this was what I thought they were talking about. 😂

I really miss this period. Had the RCA Selectavision player back then. Ended up getting rid of it after a short time and getting Pioneer's LaserDisc player. It was a lot better system. I know RCA dumped a lot of money into developing and marketing theirs but I don't believe it did so well. Simpler times, better times. I really miss the 80's.

About 10-15 years ago, I went to an antique store, and seeing that hey had the Empire Strikes Back on what I what I thought was a laserdisc. I tried taking it out to see the condition of the disk only to be unable to open the case. I saw the CED logo on it and looked it up on my phone to learn more. I never would have guessed that there was another disk-based video format back in the 80s besides laserdisc.

That’s odd that on the Eyewitness News Update at 6:01, the song played in the background is “007 Theme” from the James Bond movies!
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 3 ай бұрын
KYW was actually the birthplace of the Eyewitness News format that later spread to ABC owned stations around the country. The use of the 007 theme from "From Russia With Love" dates back to 1965 when the format was introduced. The Eyewitness News offshoots used the "Tar Sequence" theme from "Cool Hand Luke" instead.

This video is non-monetized and has zero copyright restrictions, so the ads are just part of watching stuff on KZfaq these days and really have nothing to do with me. If you don't want to watch ads, pay for KZfaq Premium.

@@80sCommercialVault I was just joking around how the quality of TV ads went downhill. Painful acting and the terrible music. Keep up the awesome videos. 😃

M&M's-wonder what the sequel ad in which they go to visit Cousin Harold in the city wouldve been like The Boys In Company C-this ad made it seem like this would be a wacky comedy in the tradition of Stripes and Private Benjamin Hill Street Blues-Belker's been watching too much TJ Hooker 😆 Colgate-with Erica Katz Schmidt's Light-with Bill Smitrovich Prince Spaghetti-Prince Spaghetti Day probably was very popular in Minneapolis 😁 KYW Eyewitness News Update-the bomb threat prank guy is still out there somewhere.. Bret Maverick-@8:58 those guys are graduates of the ISMA(Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy)

“We’re watching a great movie!” Sure we’ve waited 17 years, the discs skip like there’s no tomorrow, and it pretty much destroyed RCA but hey, this is a great movie!😁
@80sCommercialVault
@80sCommercialVault 2 ай бұрын
Even though it was a disaster and lost them a ton of money, the CED didn't destroy RCA. It was bought by its former parent company General Electric in 1986 primarily because it owned NBC and they wanted it. GE then basically gutted the company, selling off or liquidating most of its divisions.
