I always wondered why TBS showtimes were always five minutes after the half hour 🤔
@80sCommercialVault19 сағат бұрын
I believe it was to catch viewers who had missed the start of other shows on competing networks. Also, once a viewer was roped into a TBS show that started 5 minutes later, it made them less likely to switch the channel to catch another program that had already started.

Super Metroid did make one huge improvement. Making Kraid larger than Samus as well as making Ridley more hardcore. It worked so well, they used that in Zero Mission for GBA(a remaster of NES Metroid). Mode 7 or Blast Processing? I wouldn't have a Genesis until Christmas of that year. I pretty much spent more time towards the NES throughout all of 1994 while juggling whatever SNES games I played.

yeah I saw someone on twitch the other day trying the NES X-MEN... looked about as awful as I remembered it. So I have no doubt the Game Gear one is at least marginally better than that if not moreso.

Sega's commercials in the Genesis era can be summed up with "Hey kids! Our competitors are DUMB, and if you like their games then you are too!" I was glad when they eventually stopped all the trash talking and started focusing on the merits of their own products instead.

The main thing I remember about the Game Gear is how battery hungry they were. A friend on the school bus used to play his on the ride to school/back home every day (probably about an hour total ride time) and every couple days that thing would need six more batteries. Those days before everything was rechargable were rough. And expensive.

Super Metroid was a awesome game. The only nitpick I have about it is no 16-bit verison of the Brinstar theme from NES Metroid.
@bubufubu2 күн бұрын
It still is an awesome game. I believe it was number one, all-time and across multiple polls, for more than a decade. However, it was very disappointing to see them disrespect Kraid. He was the most difficult boss in the original game. Here, they nerfed him and he's been a joke of a boss ever since. And, if I'm remembering correctly, no 16-bit version of Kraid's Lair, either. Best song in the original game.

The Game Gear I owned as a kid didn't get much play because the thing was a battery hog. Game Boy proved games didn't need to be in color to be fun!

It's crazy how the game boy beat game gear.
@80sCommercialVault2 күн бұрын
Not crazy when you consider the hardware (battery life of GG vs GB) and the library (tons of classic games on the GB). Neither system was very pocketable, but the Game Gear was absolutely enormous for a system that was supposed to be portable. I owned the Game Gear at the time and wish I'd owned a Gameboy.
@yusakug2 күн бұрын
Not really. Better battery life, larger selection of games, backing of Nintendo…Plus classics like the Super Mario Land titles and Link’s Awakening.

Super Metroid…a near perfect game. The only downside is I still can’t do the wall jump very well, so that part where you have to jump up that huge shaft is a pain. Makes me long for the simple wall jumps in Batman for NES or Ninja Gaiden.
@bubufubu2 күн бұрын
You mention the difficult of the wall jump, which is true. They should have made that easier to execute. However, that's not the only downside. Kraid was almost completely nerfed. This was a really stupid decision by Nintendo as it was the most difficult boss in the original game. I'm also fairly sure that we didn't get a 16-bit version of Kraid's Lair for Super Metroid.

Wagner Cordless Power Roller- The whimsical music playing throughout this commercial adds a nice level of charm for a commercial about a glorified paint roller. Jolly Rancher- Interesting choice of moment they showed where a lizard tried a Jolly Rancher at 2:13 and spit it out. The artificial fruit flavor must have been too much for it to handle.

I got a Game Gear for a cross country trip to Florida for a Disney trip. It was not far into the trip that I discovered the battery life was crap. Definitely some good games, but it just wasn’t worth it unless you had the portable charger.

Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a disaster both behind and on the screen. The director, John Landis, had worked with Murphy before (Trading Places and Coming to America), but found working with Murphy difficult this time. Eddie was at a low point in his career, and emotionally distant. Bronson Pinchot (Serge) remembers talking to Murphy, and finding him very downbeat. Eddie refused to improvise and didn’t work well with anyone.
@WWJD852 күн бұрын
It didn't help the movie didn't have Ronny Cox and John Ashton.
@Tr0nzoid2 күн бұрын
I remember reading how Sherry Lansing was running Paramount at that time and really rushing movies into production. This was one of those casualties. John Landis was the wrong director for a movie in this franchise. He has some hits and memorable crowdpleasers but their pacing is kind of off and definitely not right for Beverly Hills Cop.

Wow the "my first phone" bell commercial with that mickey mouse phone. Yesterday I watched a video of someone reviewing the tiaras bayou adventure ride at Disney and he saw a payphone and was so surprised ("when was the last time I saw one of those? I must be getting old!"). Maybe landlines style phones are making a comeback now

Go to any major airport and there are still tons of payphones. They're actually still in a lot of places, but many people ignore them because they have no use for them.

Last night, I was watching Hart to Hart and Max wore an apron that said "I can't hack it without my food processor," and these commercials are a few years older than that show but close enough it is interesting there's a food processor commercial in this video. It would be fun to see a late 70s/early 80s food processor cookbook, some vintage cookbooks are great, maybe they can publish a new one inspired by the style and recipes from this time

"I've posted this before, but here it is again. Because it's awesome" No joke, the Wrigley's jingle might be my favourite 80's jingle of all time. Ever since I found the ad, my husband and I would randomly sing the jingle to each other and point out all the 80's movie references. I would legit buy that song if it was ever released as a single, it's that good.
