80 vs 100 Series and Why the 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser is NOT the Answer

David and I review two trucks that we currently own a 2006 Lexus LX470, and a 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser. Prices have just about bottomed out for the 100 Series and in a lot of scenarios can be found cheaper than the 80 Series now that those have turned into collector toys. Are the 80 series worth the additional "cool" tax? If you REALLY want one sure, but most likely the 100 series will do everything you need it do and be comfortable while doing it.

There's something so special about the 80, even if it's just a grocery hauler. I have/had a bunch of Toyota trucks - Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, 4Runner - and the 80 is still my favorite.

@@Dan_And_Daves_Garage the SC is great. It’s a savior at altitude, when I lived above 8000’ and on higher backcountry trails. It doesn’t make the 80 fast, but it allows it to keep up with modern traffic. Passing your wife in her stock 100, at 8000’, going uphill in your fully armored 80 with rear drawers, 33s on stock gears, and Slee speedo correction gear - no problem!

For 95% of poeple the 100 series is the way to go. Better power, more comfortable and still very capable. For the other 5% that want to do more off-roading and having it even more capable (and a lot cheaper to mod) the 80 series is king...especially the 1995 and later (OBDII) and if you can get the 3X locked. I have a 1997 Collector's Edition 3X locked and it's absolutely amazing. My 3rd 80 series.
@Dan_And_Daves_Garage

I enjoy my 80 series a lot and the 3x locked is something I'd like to own one day, however, I'm keeping my eyes open on fb marketplace and prices are coming down on these 100 series fast, making them even more tempting. The cost difference between an early 100 series and 3x 80 is so significant that you could probably buy an early 100 series and build it out for the cost of 3x locked 80 with money left over for gas. Better yet, you won't be afraid of getting crucified by ih8mud members if you beat it up offroad.

I have a coworker with an 80 and a 100 series. After listening to what he had to say, I went with a 100 for myself. My truck is used as a family car and adventure rig, so what it lacks in more hard core off-road ability it more than make up for in everyday practicality.

Good choice. The 100 is definitely more comfortable on the road, and a lot less likely to hear compliments from the wife when she drives. I actually just got a GX460 for the family, so now I've got the 80 for adventures and the GX for around town. Video on that soon

I bought a 2001 100-series in 2019. I don’t need it for any of my hobbies. -the styling was already 20+ years old when I bought it. My perception of its appeal hasn’t moved at all over the past 4 years. I like it as much today as I did then. If I had bought a new vehicle I would want the new hotness by now. -I don’t care if my kids throw a football at the door panel. -a happy-meal or donut with a tailgate is a memory. -3 rows of seats, and the 3rd row reclines. I can put row 2 up and at 6’1” have my legs straight while sitting in a reclined 3rd row. -I can sell it for my cost +inflation. -(90.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity)+(tow hitch box that can carry 500lbs with 24 cubic feet)+(150lbs roof rack limit)=camouflage from 2nd cousins along if I can help them move.

Had a few 97 80 series and recently traded it for a 100. Honestly, the 100 serves my purpose better for long, smooth, highway road trips. 80 felt like a rough tank, it was kinda similar yet so different from the 100. Will get an 80 again some day, some odd nostalgia factor about it that I miss. The 100 is an overall better mix between modern and classic.
@Dan_And_Daves_Garage
@Dan_And_Daves_Garage 5 ай бұрын
That's our feeling as well. The 80 is pretty much limited to fun outdoor adventures and offroading. David ultimately bought the LX470 because it could haul all his junk, is super quiet, comfortable, fits his outdoorsy and adventurous lifestyle, and can do long stretches on the highway up and down the east coast. I'm not upset that I have an 80 instead of a 100, it just kind of forces you to have two vehicles at this point.

The 80 series only has KYB Gas-a-just shocks and I believe stock springs. I don't see any labels or anything on the springs to indicate they are anything but original. When we bought it there was no mention of any suspension work done either. Only other mod is the 33" K02s on the stock wheels.

I'd imagine more will start popping up for sale in the US as the JDM importers bring them in.

No to the turbo unless you import a turbo diesel model. The only other ones that fit your criteria are the late model 96-97 FZJ80. Those will have OBD2, airbags (driver/passenger only), and R134a A/C rather than R12. Hope this helps

For 90% of people who want an adventure vehicle and don’t wrench in their own cars, Just get a newer gen 4Runner. They are ready to go right out the box. Those old Land Cruiser require a lot of maintenance and you will be replacing old parts every few months. 80 series land cruisers don’t really have a lot of maintenance videos on KZfaq. It gets annoying tbh. If you’re looking for solid axles you’re better off getting a wrangler. Way more aftermarket support and maintenance videos. I don’t have any experience with the 100 series but they are kind of dated looking and heavy for actual off-roading. I’m not hating on LC just trying share my personal experience with them. They are great vehicles for weekend camping trips on dirt/gravel roads

Fair observation that there are other vehicle options out there that offer similar or better capabilities. Really depends on what features you value the most and what terrain you plan on conquering. Buying any 25+ year old vehicle, you run into the same aging issues no matter what make/model you buy. Is there anything specific you'd like to see maintenance wise on the 80 series? Almost everything has already been solved on iH8mud. Personally haven't ran into anything complicated. Even if you ran into something funky you can buy and download all the factory service manuals from Toyota's TIS site.

When prices for early fj80s were more reasonable, I did a video on exactly all those points and the conclusion was, if you just want an 80 series to beat up on and enjoy on the trail since people like you write them off as worthless, they are great rigs to dip your toes into the Land Cruiser market. Now that prices have stabilized and the gap between a non-locked fzj80 and fj80 are pretty close (at least here in the mid-atlantic) it would make sense to pony up the little bit of extra cash to get the fzj80.
