Next one of the Gen X's greatest guitar heroes, Steve Stevens breaks down a bonafide 80s classic. Rebel Yell by Billy Idol. First of all the song title came from a night of partying with the Rolling Stones… Then when they tried to record it, their drummer wasn’t hacking it… Low and behold they could hear a rival band recording next door with a killer drummer so they recruited him for the session and he ended up joining the band. then the guitarist created the song’s signature sound from a toy robot.. It’s a great story behind a classic straight from the man… next on professor of rock.

Some guitarists are overlooked because they are “sidemen,” or part of bands so big they become anonymous. Billy Idol has long credited Stevens as being responsible for 75 percent of the songwriting between them. He’s a dynamite showman and kills on electric and acoustic with equal flair. His solo on Rebel Yell is a true composition. You can sing it and it holds up on its own. A great touch on the instrument.

As a guitar player listening to pop radio back then, you heard Rebel Yell and knocked you out! There were no other guitar players like Steve Stevens with that combination of raw energy, massive dives and bends, scratching picks, incredible dexterity on scales and imagination on other unique techniques that had not been invented yet. He is definitely a Guitar God and what makes him so good is that he is like Alex from Rush in that he services the song and not his ego. I actually put them in the same category in that they make their songs better without dominating the sonic space and yet the incredible artistry that Stevens exhibits is nothing less than perfection. Just Love it, the interview was so good! Thanks Prof :)

@MJ CS "under-rated guitarist" Says who?? Says you?? He created whole new ways for a guitarist to affect a song. Listen to "White Wedding" where rather than playing chords he's strumming riffs that don't follow the rhythm of the song at all, but have their own role. Then he recorded that guitar solo that WAS Top Gun. Billy Idol and Steve should have written a sequel song called, "Rock the Cradle Some More!"

@@cl5619 Yes, underrated. I rarely see him mentioned in top guitarist lists. I know they're kind of impossible to compile, but he really is THAT good. Also, your last point is spot on, and explains why he is underrated; the albums only show a very small subset of what he can do, and only in concert does he get featured in a way where you can really see what he can do. Here”s a memory for you. I remember going out to The Red Onion (Orange County Ca) and seeing this on the screen and dancing to this song. Then years later Im a grand mother my daughter bought a small retro record player in 2016 for her 1 year old. And the album with song on it. Keep in mind in 2016 Albums are not sold in stores everywhere. My little grandson would wake up in the morning or from a nap and point to the record player to hear this “Rebel Yell” song! Lol and we would dance like crazy. Lol great memories to this song.

Best guitar player performance I ever saw in my life was the first Steve Stevens & Billy Idol at the Toronto CNE Grandstand in the 80's. Most amazing playing I ever saw and he never stood still for the entire show. Constantly jumping, dancing and spinning like a top at high speed while playing perfectly and not missing a beat. I also saw the second show a year later, but he was much more subdued onstage, I assumed it was because in the earlier concerts he was upstaging Billy Idol. Everybody was watching Steve and not Billy.

Your ability to let the stars shine a little brighter longer and give us not only an education on how a song is created by the geniuses who spawned them, but to also show their personalities and passion for the music they have so generously given us with for the soundtrack of our lives is a truly a gift! I feel so blessed to have stumbled across your channel! Thank you!

That was a great interview. I knew the music, but didn't realize how important Steve Stevens was to all of it. On top of that, he seems like a really humble, gracious guy, who's also really talented. And he killed me with that " my folk background .." LOL, totally not what I was expecting.

David Drew from the hit song "Green Eyed lady" always references Tommy Price when it come for me to play drums since I'm playing drums with him in the church band that we're member's of, he admires Steve Stevens and Tommy Price and he ackowledges this in my playing as well. Loved the interview with Steve and I had the opportunity in the late 80's and early 90's of recording at Electric Lady land studio's and the vibe in there is incredible. Thanks for the interview.

Steve Stevens is shockingly clear thinking and well spoken for a guy who likely lived a VERY colorful, adventurous life as lead guitarist for Billy Idol. He seems smart, humble and has a great memory.

This was SO GOOD. I am a big fan of Billy Idol and for years and years before this video I seriously used to wonder who came up with all of the instrumentation and HOW! It is all such GENIUS! I am very glad I was able to find out. The how of it all is a fascinating story. The music is expert level and still fresh today. I will listen to these songs now anew and with more appreciation. Thank you both SO MUCH!

Back in 1989 I was the bass player in a band called 4 U Only and the guitar player named mark told me a story about Steve Stevens and how mark did a show opener with billy idol and for some reason mister Stevens didn’t have his guitar with him and asked if he could use mark’s and so he said yes and of course he’s a big fan and couldn’t believe that his guitar hero was playing his guitar and after the show he handed mark the guitar and said thanks and walked away so my buddy put the guitar in the case and noticed that the guitar had some irregularities on the finish and he thought it was probably sweat but the next day he pulled the guitar out of the case and discovered the marks on his guitar must have came from the spiked leather bracelet he (Steve) wore that night but he wasn’t mad or angry about it because every time he looked at his guitar he had something special to point out and talk about he seemed to be very proud about that and rebel yell was a song we always looked forward to playing every night and my buddy emulated everything from his hair to the clothes he wore and mark was a great guitarist rest his sole but being in the band with him was a blast it never seamed like a job we had fun, good energy on stage and hung out during the day and if the payola was better I could’ve easily done that as a career but all good things come to an end sooner or later Rest In Peace Mark Bellinger save me a spot by the gate we’ve got a lot of catching up to do bro 😎

I never knew how good Stevens was until I saw them on VH1 Storytellers back in the day which was him and Idol and an acoustic guitar. When he broke into the intro riff for Rebel and realized it was not synths or keys that made that lick work, just Stevens and an Ovation it was an enlightenment. Massive respect.

I have been to so many concerts in my life. I saw many great bands at their peak.....but one of the greatest shows I ever saw was a free outdoor show of Billy Idol. It was after he hadn't toured for a long time and I remember telling my best friend on the way to the show that if Steve Stevens was not playing guitar that we were leaving....Well, Steve was there and they were fantastic. I was sick when I found out the next day that Billy and the guys hung around for over an hour signing autographs and taking pictures. Great memory though.
