Definitely not a poser. If you got to a spot and got on your board your good. Being a poser literally means you are standing around and posing instead of skating.

Love your channel man. I was born in 76. I love and miss the Earth in the 80’s. I grew up in the South Bay then moved to the SGV for Junior HS and on. I had a dope Ninja skateboard 😂😂😂😂.

Man, I remember the 80s skateboarding. The movie Gleaming the Cube. Idolizing Tony Hawk. Big wide skateboards. Bright colors. One of my board's came with a radio under it. But sadly, I sucked at skateboarding. LOL.

@@80sLife finally somebody feels me.. Listening to suicidal tendencies and other thrash metal also gangster rap too NWA and public enemy as you would take your ramps you built I'm Rollin down the street on your skateboards to a nearby school or to your friends houses and skate board all day on a old school Powell Peralta with independent trucks and slimeball Wheels. What you know about that. Lmao 💯

fantastic video Growing up in the 70's and 80's all I did was skateboard in Toronto and I would buy Skateboarder mags and dream about living in California and skating the days away. First real board was a alva with acs 500's and yo yo wheels. then I got a dogtown with indys and green sims snakes wish I still had them thanks for the memories

That little ramp at the City Walk Vans store was dope. Probably a bit taller than you said, just above 4' high and all wood, no masonite. Really solid and well built. I always liked skating for the crowds when the store was busy.

There was also Sk8 Underground in Moreno Valley. Also a all wood park. Those two parks were basically it for Southern California in the early to mid 90s.

I'm surprised and happy that so many of these spots remain and are pretty much seemingly more or less the same as they were back in the day. Given the pace at which they're tearing down and replacing structures these days, that's pretty incredible.

I moved out of the Valley in 2002, but visit several times a year, and even moved back for about a year and a half from early 2018 to late 2019. So much changed, but so much is still familiar. Some of the food places that remain open have changed hands, and don't taste the same. My sisters worked at My Hero sub sandwich shop in Northridge in the mid-80s. One of the employees they worked with bought it in the early 90s, and owned it until a few years ago and sold it to a couple who worked for her. It is still good, but slightly different. The original bakery that made the bread for them (located in an industrial area of Northridge) closed down several years back, so it is different. However, close enough to original. I am happy to see and taste Tommy's still is the same. Cupid's used to have several more locations, but is still open at the spot I remember on Lindley just south of Nordhoff and tastes the same (although I do prefer Tommy's chili dogs to Cupid's). The Shakeys I used to go to as a kid on Devonshire and Reseda is still open, and there is a mom and pop fish and chip place next door (used to be H. Salt up to the early 90s) which is still there, as well as across the parking lot the same Chinese restaurant that was there in 1979 when we moved to the area is still there. That parking lot is a gold mine for memories, lol. My parents still live in the same house near Tampa/Chatsworth we moved to in 1979 when I was 10, so that is my place to get my bearings on the numerous trips to the L.A. I go on to visit them.

Dude, I’m pretty sure I’ve said it before, but the stories you tell about your dad remind me SO much of my dad. He was also very supportive of my skating. Had the stickers on his van, would drive me to contests and to ditches and whatever other random skate spot. And I could see him pulling something like what your dad did when he told you to get out and skate at the place that said no skating! My dad took me and a friend to the Carson Velodrome contest. When the PA operator was having trouble cueing up Hosoi’s music for his run, and Hosoi was getting visibly frustrated, my dad stood up and yelled “Shut up and skate!” And got a big laugh from the crowd. I was embarrassed but looking back it was hilarious. Skate dads are the best!

I can relate to this one. You going to your old spots reminiscing and telling us about your youth as a skater. I grew up in Tampa, a freestyle bmxer in the 80's. I recently rode my mountain bike in my old neighborhood looking at my old spots while I recorded with my cell phone telling stories to show my best bud who lives 20 miles away. We rode everywhere and shredded. 51 now and still riding. Love your videos.🍻

There were 2 indoor skateparks in the East LA area. The 1st one was in City Terrace off the 10 freeway, it was called Lipslide. Very small maybe 3-4 ramps. The 2nd place was on Atlantic St in East LA/Montebello/Commerce area called Transition. They also had a pro ramp and a 6ft mini ramp outside. It was a old Napa Auto Parts warehouse. If you had pads and a helmet I think they charged $1 entry fee for all day. However they had pad and helmet rentals also which was like $5. Before it shut down they added a snack bar(kinda), skateboard parts, accessories, and skate shirts...
@iamstrangeways
@iamstrangeways Жыл бұрын
Never heard of Lipslide but pre internet it was all word of mouth. Next town over might well had been the other side of the world when you are a kid. Ford Park in Bell Gardens had some sort of ramp but by the time we heard about it it had been taken apart and was behind a locked fence.

That was really great Kurt. Growing up in the 70's in Ireland, I remember having an "annual" ( like a compendium of some magazine ) that we bought at a "bring and buy" sale for the Scouts. It was all focused on LA. There were pieces on custom cars, and custom paint jobs. But also a big piece on skateboarding. We'd never seen a skate bowl ( I seem to remember it mentioned that these grew out of kids skating in empty swimming pools in LA ). Then some older kid in the neighbourhood had a skateboard. He let us all have a go, but we could just about stand up on it. I remember being surprised at how heavy it was. And when we discovered that the axles moved ... minds were blown ! But it never took off in our cul de sac street. I guess Irish rainy weather is not designed for skateboarding. Here in Prague the first event I ever went to when I arrived in 2007 was the annual Skate competition. A HUGE half pipe, great music, and some cool skills. There is a great skate park right across the street from where I live now, but I've never skated there. The kids seem to prefer those mini scooters, where they can hold the handlebars and rotate the board around under their feet. Randomly, Tony Hawk visited in 2015 to promote his new ( EA ?) game. I got there early and there was a huge crowd.

I definitely remember the mini ramp at the Vans store. I remember it being at the right hand side of the store near the register. I remember it vividly because thats where i bought my Royal Blue and Black Geoff Rowley's.. I used to live in Toluca Lake in a duplex on Cahuenga, walking distance from Citywalk. That was back when they had the best shops and food. Ballzac store, The Magic Shop, Out of this World Comic book store... Right next door to bomb ass Jody Maroni's.... I remember at one point, Panasonic rented out a spot on Citywalk to consumer test the Panasonic 3DO, and they'd let you play Road Rash for free... Those really were the Golden years....
