Today we make Pumpkin Spice candy so it will be ready to be bought during the fall. This technique originated in the Victorian period. It's labor intensive, but all art is, and this candy crosses over between food and art. It's one of the few arts that can hit four senses at once. Follow us here, Instagram, Facebook and twitter.

Hayley “Pumpkin spice” has nothing to do with pumpkins. In Europe, that mix of spices is most closely associated with Christmas foods, both sweet and savoury.

Very neat. It's fascinating to watch an expert work. This candy has the same origins as glass Canework, "Murrine" Millefiori. I've played with the technique in polymer clay making oranges, flowers and eyeball irises. You can not only make a replica of an orange slice, you can roll it into a miniature orange and peel / slice it.

I love this video! I've always thought ALL kinds of squash are just so tasty and enjoy working them into my cooking. I'm glad to know that the "pumpkin" taste we all enjoy is really a mixture of squash. It does make me wonder if I've ever enjoyed a purely pumpkin flavor though. I'll be looking out for your pumpkin candies when they come around again.

If you want to make pumpkin pie from scratch without the cans, look for sugar pumpkins. They're much smaller than the carving pumpkins and taste great.

The smaller sugar pumpkins also work well for pies. They have a lot more flavor than the canned stuff.

my grandparents friend's granddaughter was born in England, they decided to have a small family gathering when she came over from across the pond to good old Canada for some business meeting, she brought friends, we had pumpkin pie, and apparently they don't have pumpkin pie in England, so her and her friends ate about half of the damn pie and the rest of us had about a slice to our self's

People who make pumpkin pie using fresh pumpkin will use sugar pumpkins. They are smaller than jack-o-lantern pumpkins, and sweeter. Admittedly, canned pumpkin does actually taste better, so I no longer go to the trouble of preparing pumpkins for pie.

Pumpkin pie is usually made from smaller sugar pumpkins, not the large jack o'lantern pumpkins.

Probably nutmeg and cumin. Those are the most common spices.

Pumpkin spice is essentially pumpkin pie. Pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, allspice, even ginger if you want a "spicier" flavor
