Rough sleepers and homelessness are not a common sight in developed countries like Singapore.
Uncle Yip shares his story of why he had to live on a bench. We dive into who he was before he lost his home, and the physical and emotional challenges of being homeless, as well as the social stigma that comes with it.
Update
Since the publishing of this video, we have received additional information from volunteers in the constituency who have worked with Mr Yip over the years.
This is the latest information we have:
- Volunteers and MP have secured a rental unit for Mr Yip. However due to personal reasons, he prefers to sleep at the void deck.
- Mr Yip is currently in the middle of a move to a new Govt-issued rental flat (with the help of volunteers)
In addition, we are currently in touch with Mr Yip and fellow volunteers to gain a better understanding of ways we can offer better support to him and others facing similar challenges.

To parents out there, make sure you can take care of yourself first before you decide to have kids. Don't expect kids to take care of you like its their obligation, and if they do, do not take it for granted. You have the choice to have kids but the kids do not have a choice of parents. Respect to this uncle for not blaming kids for his predicament

God knows what’s their relationship is like, so it’s not fair to judge the kids for whatever reason, to not have him with them. Having said that, having kids and taking care of parents, should be an unconditional act. Not weighing whether you will give birth to a caring kid, not sure of having a million bucks in your bank account before having one. There are many kids whom worked hard to make sure their parents have a better life in their old age.

This is beyong just expecting kids to take care of parents, the visiting every Sunday, the providing an allowance not even that. How does it make sense that your child sees you living under a block, homeless and they turn a blind eye, 0 support and help? So because parents put you on this earth 'without consent' you don't have obligation to ensure your family, the one who raised you from birth is living in a safe, comfortable environment? Like this is ok if YOUR parents were living like this? Unless you've grown up with Terrible horrific parents, it's WILD that you seem to be ok with it.

But I’m really sad that as a PAP member in his younger days, he’s not appreciated for his contribution. The most admirable tthing is his attitude of no regrets, no resentment. Take a bow, Mr Yip. My parents are illiterate (many pioneer gen r lowly educated) with my dad as odd-job labourer (later in construction) still manage to upgrade us to 4-rm flat - same with many of my peers with pioneer gen parents or at least got 3-rm flat. Uncle Yip act a good catch with education n stable govt job. Seems unlikely to me he hasn't got a flat before 🤔 it could b issues on both sides.

Very sad to hear this kind of story. No matter how tough his kids life are, i strongly believe it is children responsibility to look after the parents 🙏🏽🙇🏻‍♀️😢😢 Thankfully, in Singapore society, there are still supports rendered to needy people. Elsewhere, maybe tougher or toughest life.

I knew an old man who was abusive to his kids and his wife, and they wanted nothing to do with him when they grew up. Sometimes it's hard to judge others when we don't know the full details of their lives.

Pity the uncle and the children. We would never know but maybe the children had helped uncle a lot in the past by clearing his huge gambling debts and there is nothing more they could give and cutting him off is only way they can finally move on with their life? I won't assume that the children are ungrateful based on limited information about his family from this clip.

@@gomathisuppiah2449 Did you view the video at all? Uncle already said so in the video so how can it b after day of filming/interview? I initially thot he didn't approach authorities for help till recently as some elderly can b stubborn abt 'not troubling people'. Refer to latest update by MOSG - Authorities & volunteers helped him with a place in the past but he wanted to stay at the void deck for personal reasons.

I really hope that the government would provide housing for people like this, with no one to support, no place to live, no more money from retirement. With the ever increasingly cost of living in Singapore. This COULD BE US IN THE FUTURE 🇸🇬

not judging him, just the sight of 4D numbers worries me... I have known elderly who told me "We buy lottery is exactly because we are poor" (nope i didnt typed that wrong), which I cant really fault them. For some low-medium income families , i think their child being born in this generation is a saving grace for their lack of financial literacy in the past. regardless, I truly wish uncle all the best.

I got so annoyed when I heard him say how people would throw eggs and try to invite ants to his place. He's already having so much on his plate, and yet people can't have basic compassion towards him. I guess that's the price paid for a society that consistently pushes competition and work culture. Those people have no idea that the person they were mocking was someone how helped build everything they have now, actually disturbing. What's the point of education, status and a good job if you lose your basic humanity?

This is the irony of life. There are some multi-millionaires who die before reaching their 70s, 60s or even 50s or 40s. while some broke people would live miserably into their 80s, 90s...

Bringing up children involves a lot of hardship especially when the spouse is not in tandem with you! I believe it takes a spiritual commitment in any marriage for the family to survive n thrive. More importantly, we need to be patient n considerate n understanding in dealing with matters concerning family affairs. I believe, uncle has his right to live the way he wants n also the country is obligated to render assistance to him, after all, he has contributed vastly by contributing towards the upbringing of his children . We are all contributing towards our country! How the country can help to take care of us is depending on their policies n how well the country is governed for the benefits of the people!
