F.P. Journe’s work is both unique and wonderful. His work and background, along with his devotion to Breguet, reflect a French touch to everything he does. But it is his dedication to perfection and understanding his craft make him an artist and his work, art.

I love the Chronomètre Bleu! When I could not find a Chronomètre Bleu I got the platinum Chronomètre Souverain instead, and once it's back from FPJ Service, it will probably get more wear-time than my Chronomètre à Résonance. Made of tantalum the Bleu, is identical to my Souverain except for the reserve indicator. The double barrels in both watches are to provide constant force and not added reserve, which to me is a perfection in mechanical time-keeping. Kindest regards, Bill

Thanks for the inspiring video Bill! Really well researched and done. Just one small suggestion for a future edition about Journe would be the inclusion of the T30 series. Realize it's not a watch family but it's the model that better connects FP to its origins. Now your analogy about horology with arts was spot on. There is something on certainly watchmakers, brands and event models that elevates them to classic/reference level. Journe and most his timepieces exemplifies it very well. All the best, Amintas

Hi Amintas! Thanks for being inspired! As for the T10 and T30 series...there were so few that I decided to pass this time around. In fact I passed on several important models that will have to be covered in a later video. I saw the Toubillon Souverain Bleu at the NYC Boutique and it looked more more noir than bleu! What a watch, though! I'm going to have to go back and add a number of videos on some of the individual watches and groups (and subgroups) of watches by FP Journe. I'll add the T30 and T10 to that list. Kindest regards, Bill

WatchArtSci I have.become extremely intrigued by FP Journe and has me rethinking my entire watch collecting purpose. I have acquired some Rolex and other nice brands but now considering to move away Rolex and into Journe. What do you think of the Elegante 48?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
The Elegante 48 is probably the best priced and one of the most interesting in the FP Journe collection. They are a quartz watch with the movement designed by FPJ, and they go to sleep and wake when not in use. If you don't like the idea of quartz, then the watch I like best is the Chronomètre Souverain . (Winner of the GPHG Men's Prize in 2005). They're not as popular as the Chronomètre Bleu in tantium but I think they're a better watch because they have a power reserve indicator and in precious metal. The Linesport in titanium would be my next choice, but not aluminum (made for runners). The Elegante 48, though, is an interesting watch. Kindest regards, Bill

Hey Willie, you never know. I never thought I'd own an Agenhor, but I found that my Harry Winston had a bi-retrograde module by Agenhor. If you're up for some watch detective work, you may be able to find a watch with an FP Journe movement that is affordable. In his auto-chronology, FP Journe mentions that in 1996 that he... "Creates TIM SA in Geneva, devoted to developing exclusive calibres at the the service various brands." Apparently, FPJ did create a number of movements, but I have not yet found out which watches or for which watch companies. If we could find out who Journe via TIM SA made watches for (and kept our mouths shut until we had one) maybe we could find some real buys! I'm lookin'! Cheers, Bill

@watchartsci 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Malthus...the Bleu is the watch most want initially. Cool watch. If you plan to get one new, you'll have to wait a couple of years; so if you order one now, by the time you've save enough to buy it, it should be ready. An alternative, if I may suggest, is to get a pre-owned rose gold or platinum Chronometre Souvrain. They cost more than a Bleu initially, but the Blues go up in price by about $10k...so if you're going to get a Bleu...might as well get a new one. The platinum Chronomètre Souverain is about $30k initially but you can pick one up used for around $24-25k used, and about $3-4k less for the rose gold one. Also, the Chronomètre Souverain have the power reserve indicators but the Bleu does not. I have the Chronomètre Souverain in platinum, and it's gone up in price since I got by about $5k. They're all wonderful watches, though, go can't go wrong. Cheers, Bill

Hi Jay, when I first noticed the 7 and 8 next to the small seconds on my FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain, I didn't know what to think. I've come to really like the asymmetry they bring to the watch. So glad finding someone with knowledge and who can impart it with grace, that said I've often speculated on owning an FP Journe watch, in particular the Elegante Quartz, or the Rolex Hulk 116610lv ceramic bezel mechcanical movement, what would Bill Sander's choose? Is the FP Journe quartz considered high horology? Who can enjoy a Rolex 3135 superb movement hidden from one's eyes?, truth be told high horology does sell thru exhibitionism, paying for the Rolex I won't get to enjoy the movement where with the Elegante I can almost pretend I'm playing Tron.

Hey Jim, thanks for the kind words. Between the Elegante & Hulk, I'd probably go for the Hulk because I like green and I don't have a Rolex. However, given my full options I'd get a FP Journe Chronométre Optimum because it has a remontoir d'égalité . As for exhibition windows....do you think that as the price of gold went to the stratosphere that it was cheaper to make the watch backs out of synthetic sapphire glass than gold? Kindest regards, Bill

@jim60 6 жыл бұрын
Good point on gold but I've never been a fan of precious metals, steel & titanium is where it's at for me, I'll go along with a tungsten micro rotor just to keep it the darn thing wound, then again my wife the jokester suggested a quartz because at my age setting around watching TV with a beer in hand won't wind my self-winders. The main point though is exhibition windows, IMO, really brought the watch enthusiast back to the fold, just looking at the front of a women isn't as much fun as also getting to look at the back!, then we have the skeletonized versions, (don't get me started, I've gone thru the Twiggy area), I love a little meat with my potatoes :)) No I don't think the price of gold is much of a factor, the ability of seeing art in a form that can be strapped to one's wrist is a really great feeling, I'm sure your bloggers will agree!

Why all these small companies try to compete only in the area of super expensive and hyper complicated wrist watches. They probably want to make a name for themselves in the mechanical watchmaking. In the end of the day, these watches are purely a piece of jewelry. I saw today a boutique on the airport with some of those watches which costs a fortune to buy. To be honest, most of them look ugly and have little practical use. On the other hand, it's a nice topic to see you analyze in your videos.
