There's really nothing like getting your own private compartment on a long train journey. There's also nothing like getting your own private compartment on a two-hour train journey...come on, it beats coach!
I recently took the Amtrak "City of New Orleans" from Champaign to Chicago. Originally booked in a $17 coach seat, I paid a little extra the night before my trip to reserve the Roomette. In total, this ticket was $84 one-way which is a steal. Compare this to last year when I rode the Superliner Roomette between the same cities, that ticket was $170!

Many years ago I was traveling Amtrak from New Mexico to California. I had only ridden 1 or 2 times before, so I had no idea there was anything other than 'regular' seats. Around 10pm a worker came by and motioned for me to follow her. She put me in a roomette and said Good Night. From that day to this I LOVE Amtrak and Train Rides.❤❤❤

FYI. St Louis - Chicago service is available on the City Of New Orleans. A Amtrak Motor coach takes you from the St Louis Train Station to Carbondale IL to make connections to Northbound and South City Of New Orleans.

I went to new orleans for mardi gras on the train, from chicago. i invested in a roomette. It was way more expensive, but worth the price. I arrived relaxed,unstressed. The food was good. Mardi gras was a blast.

have loved doing the Amtrak Zephyr with roomette a handful of times....other than being pricey and being late...but just have to keep that in mind.

A very comprehensive & informative upload on the CoNO - I have often wondered what the "transition car' was like from the inside & now I know, so thank you. My son & I did the Chicago to NO journey some 10 years ago in a bedroom (own shower & toilet) & we still talk about what a fun trip it was. We had previously used Greyhound for our travels from Austin Texas to Memphis, then Nashville & finally Indianapolis. I said never again - Amtrak is the best way to travel if you are not in a hurry & want to see the countryside. It gives you so much more comfort than a bus & the dining car & observation cars make the journey all that much more enjoyable.

Thank you so much! What a great experience that must’ve been. I’ve done Greyhound three times on just 3 hour rides…but even after those I try to avoid them.

Seeing that your train left Champaign 2hrs late but arrived at CUS only 90 minutes late, nowhere is it mentioned that you were time-sensitive for making a connection elsewhere be it the Blue Line or Metra headed for ?. I got a smile when you mentioned your 'inner railfan' was coming out--geeking out! :) Loved that 'race' between you and the Metra Electric--those electrics have excellent acceleration--being able to peek into another world seemingly! $84 isn't a bad price for a 2hr ride in a roomette although the Honey Nut Cheerios would've been a big letdown! Do you have an Amtrak Guest Rewards acc't? Being a college kid, of course you wouldn't have the funds to afford those two private cars tacked on the end. Being a bit older than you, I'm getting to the point where air travel is a hassle and train travel looks more and more appealing--but sadly Amtrak has such a skeletal network that route frequencies are far and few between ( I live in SE Texas)

I live in Milwaukee but I’m a student at the University of Minnesota, so I often have to take the Empire Builder between Milwaukee and Minneapolis/St Paul. It’s a 6 hour ride that I normally do in coach, but most trains I’ve been on this past year have been pulled by ALC-42s. Seeing an old P42 on the Empire Builder has become pretty rare these days.

That’s crazy to hear, never imagined it’d be rare to see a P42 on the Empire Builder this early on.

I am shocked at how expensive rooms are currently. Way out of line. Been on Amtrak before cross country a few times at very reasonable rates. But checking Minneapolis to Seattle over $2000 traveling this September if I am missing something please let me know. Thanks

15:37 that is what makes the journey a far less pleasant one for OBS employees on trains that don’t have a transition car according customer service rep at Dallas, which is served by the Texas Eagle. Standard sleeping cars don’t have a crew lounge space.

Shame the train was late. I said the same thing in my video. The CONO is notoriously on time if not early so it's always a let down when you're on the 5% of trains that get delayed

The difference is proportional - You went NY to Atlanta, eh? This chap only rode the few miles from Champaign/Urbana to Chicago. His ticket would have simply exploded in price if he had duplicated your distance going from, say, Memphis to Chicago, for example. The appearance of this being a bargain is being emphasized for some reason & is, therefore, easily able to mislead people into thinking that this is EVERY roomette price and, it is DEFinitely not! Not only is distance a contributing factor but, every other variable is too: time-of-year… section-of-country… time-of-DAY(!)… on-&-on

@@heinzobermite4831. I recently priced going from NC to Las Vegas with the cheapest sleeper. I was surprised that it costs as much as it does. I could book a seat for a fraction of the price. Haven’t decided what I will do!

Hi@@merk9569! This last July, I ended up in a very similar situation to what you mentioned. I wanted a sleeper because I was traveling a good 2,000 miles and, also, I have a variety of health issues. Well the last time I took a sleeper, those health issues were aggravated by the sleeper because there’s is no good way to elevate my feet high enough (I need to elevate my feet higher than my heart). I found that I could not get what I needed from the sleeper so, THIS year, well… I discovered that I had enough points to get a coach seat all the way back to L.A. but a sleeper was simply too expensive. So, because I realized I could not get the floor elevation I needed anyway, I bit the bullet & traded in my points for that coach seat… as you pointed out: MUCH cheaper! I was very apprehensive because of my ankle problems but, when I got on about 3-am, the conductor had my name with a seat assignment ready and it ended up being a pair of seats just for me in the back corner of the car just in front of the restaurant car. It was almost as big as the sleeper! And… it ended up being my “Private Corner” the entire way back to L.A. For a normal person who can stretch out, the sleeper might have been more comfortable but, for me, it made no difference on this trip. And SO MUCH CHEAPER! Plus, if I wanted to stretch my legs, the cafe car was right behind me & the staff there was very accommodating if all I wanted was to sip coffee & read the paper OR, the observation car was just before.

$84?......more like $2084.00! Any video that starts with a lie or some clickbait BS like a lie about an $84 roomette fare should be ignored. I'm out.
@ASAviation
@ASAviation 8 ай бұрын
You fail to acknowledge that the price depends on the route you travel. I only traveled on a two-hour trip hence my ticket was $84. Sure, if you did a longer journey the price would be higher. But in my case, it was $84.

@@ASAviation Great point! I thought the two hour time was a typo for sure. Why get a roomette for two hours? I stand corrected and apologize. The prices can be quite high, but it is worth the money for the experience. For me, being alone to relax and recharge is everything and worth it. I suggests Emeryville to Denver with a sleeper.
