This is a quick video I shot while replacing the clip type extractor in my G-series Remington 700 Short Action. This rifle has 1700 rounds of .308 through it and countless cycles with dummy rounds. It was beginning to drop cases inside the action.
Please take note. DO NOT re-use an extractor. When you remove it, junk it. Part of the reason these get bad press is because people remove them for cleaning and replace them without thinking.

I have a 700 308. LTR that I use for work. I at about 25 rounds my extractor started dropping the roads just out side the chamber and eventually just flipping the empty case around inside the chamber. After sending the whole rifle back to Remington for repair the said the chamber was rough!! They refinished it cleaned it and sent rifle back. 7 rounds later same thing!! After seeing some of your videos I called and they sent out a new extractor. I hope this works!! Thanks Head Hunter!!

Soft brass can really be hell on hardened steel. Especially after a massive 2,000 round count. If only it was built to the incredibly high standards of a Mossberg Plinkster, it'd be able to hold up better. I can't even imagine a gun able to go through an entire 2,000 rounds without catastrophic, world-ending failure. I hear one man once attempted to fire 3,000 rounds (a whole 3/5ths of one case!!!) and his trigger finger literally split atoms and went nuclear. Remington.

My 700 SPS tactical model was unable to properly extract and eject brass new out of the box. After trying their warranty service which had me remove all accessories and ship the entire rifle hundreds of miles away to have a tech not read the invoice and box it up and ship it back to me immediately without fixing anything, I decided to fix it myself. Just used a Sinclair tool to remove the ejector plunger and spring. The plunger did have a glob of grease on it that I thought was preventing it from moving enough but after replacing with a new spring and plunger, it still does not eject brass. Now I will order and try replacing this piece. Total BS. Remington never apologized or offered any comment after the fiasco. I won't be purchasing anymore Remington firearms. They're not what they used to be.

Saw absolutely no detail....too dark and for something so small, a close up would've been nice. I do appreciate your effort....but a detailed close-up would've been great.

"And that's all there is to it". Only one problem... the vid quality is so dark that I personally couldn't tell what the FREAK was going on, but thanks for trying.

I agree with Aussi Funbloke. A lot of Remington models have a rivet holding them and you should have explained it. Anyway, not a bad video. I saw two other videos (One by a professional Gunsmith) dealing with Remington bolts and both guys kept pointing at the ejector and calling it the extractor. No wonder people are working on their own guns anymore. It used to be half the guns brought to me were screwed up by the customer. Now I think it is reversed.

Great vid. Question, do you know if the extractor is suppose to be flush/not sticking out at all on the bolt face when you take the bolt out of the gun? Mine is having issues extracting issues and it's recessed all the way flat with the bolt face.

I have the same problem on my fairly new Remington 700 308. Problems started after i ran some cheap steal ammo in it to start(my mistake). Will only run higher quality rounds from now on.

How do you know where to position the extractor? Is there a groove cut in the bolt at the proper point?

Did you ever have a problem extracting those A-Zoom Snap Caps? I just bought a 700 Tactical and it's leaving the Snap Caps in the chamber or when it does extract it leaves them on top of the magazine.

Thanks, I picked up some ammo tonight and it extracts/ejects without a problem. If there is a (size) difference between the live ammo and the snap caps it is not discernible to my eye...

This is a later model extractor. Not all 700 extractors are like this, You should point out that your instructions are NOT for the riveted type extractor. Anyone trying this on one of those will trap themselves. This method will wreck the extractor and the rivet. Before removing the extractor the rivet needs to be drifted out,

It's almost as if an engineer at Remington one day looked down at the floor next to the lathe, picked up a small metal shaving, and bet his colleagues he could turn it into a working extractor...AS A JOKE!! Sadly, the executives who only cared about profits, took this "joke" and turned into production reality.

I only have one Remington Rifle and will never buy another one just because the extractor they use. As far as safety goes, with proper muzzle control 100% of the time it is not an issue.

So.... you bought a remington 700 why? You aren't the shooter you try to pass yourself off as are you? About the only improvement you've done is grown a beard... and that's more of a red flag for someone who is BSing more than anything else. My 2 cents.
