That color is beautiful! PPF on a car with mileage that low is a wise move! It'll keep it looking awesome. My 2004 Z06 had 812 miles back in August of '05. There wasn't a mark on it. 112k on it now. I love it too much to get rid of it! It's old and needs a few things. That's ok by Me. Keep the great content coming, Matt! Thanks for sharing this with us.

Question. I heard you say a couple times you were nervous about hammering down on a few spots too much. I take as you're scared of making the clear too thin. But couldn't you just use a paint thickness depth gauge to know if you have room to hit it again or not? I get its measuring the paint and the clear, so you can never know for sure, but when comparing to the rest of the car I would imagine this would give you the info to make an educated decision and feel more confident about pushing on or stopping at a certain point. Haven't heard you talk much on this topic and I'm curious on your take.

Matt meant when you are running a compound over the car. you’re removing clearcoat not paint there’s a layer of clear on top of the paint you don’t get to paint until you’ve completely burned through your clearcoat

With so few miles and so many years, what perishable items and fluids require replacement?
@timkinley1779
@timkinley1779 2 жыл бұрын
This car is probably 100% correct. But, the petroleum based products (engine oil, gear oil, trans fluid and brake fluid) will not break down for a really long time. The seals could from a lack of movement. Maybe the coolant since it has water in it. Sealing and isolation materials are the only ones designed to break-down. The felt to isolate the moveable glass, the slipcoat in the rubber moldings and deadening materials (insulation) are designed to purposefully break down. Think 'pencil eraser' as so simply explained by one of my former design engineers.

If you're gonna PPF and basically never polish again why wouldn't you go more aggressive on the polishing and possibly even wet sanding to get rid of the orange peel? Should get it perfect like glass before preserving in PPF imo.
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 2 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense on a modern paint system. You'd remove a large portion of the clear. Then you'd just have orange peel back from the PPF.
@Aiyahhh
@Aiyahhh 2 жыл бұрын
@@ObsessedGarage Fair point, you'll never be completely orange peel free because of the PPF but it should be a bit less when the orange peel is coming only from the PPF itself. Either way it is a beautiful car and I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Every part of the process creates orange peel. The forced application of liquids results in dimples.
@timkinley1779

@@jrose7381 Base coat then clear coat. Some assembly plants don't use primer because of the different materials. Urethane or injected polys for bumpers and mirrors, aluminum, carbon fiber and stamped steel require different bondings. Metalwork must be treated for rust prevention and is typically dipped or dry-charged before the base coat. Sprayed basecoat followed by clearcoat each produce orange peel. Monoblock flats are the only colorants that are not wet and are not clearcoated. Primer, base and clear can each be blocksanded between applications. Which is not industry standard and typically custom.

Why did you end up going for ppf on this specific car? You said previously that you don't like the look of ppf, and it creates edges that you need to be cautious about when washing. The e92 being the car you enjoy the most to wash and to look at, i think ppf is not the best solution here. Even if it's a pristine and rare car. You don't drive a lot, rarely in traffic where you tend to get stonechip. This being so low mileage, i think you will put even less miles on it. I would rather enjoy the look of perfected paint and takes a small risk. If you were driving every day in heavy traffic with bad road, ppf will be great on a pristine car like this.
