Wireless convenience is nice, but not all third party game controllers as up to the same quality as the originals. The 8BitDo controller mod kit looks to change that.

What a great review. Very straightforward and to the point. I will definitely be grabbing one of these. I have a non-working super Nintendo controller I saved for something exactly like this. I have a good feeling there is more to come from 8bitdo!!!! Thanks for posting!!

$20 for the board, not bad. $25 for a receiver, not good.

My thoughts exactly. A little too steep to be worth it.
@SirJoel
@SirJoel 6 жыл бұрын
You only need the receiver for consoles that don't have bluetooth. Anything that has built-in bluetooth is good to go (computers, phones, Switch, etc). I can see how the price would be a bit steep if you wanted to use these on original consoles, though.
@nickguy6820
@nickguy6820 6 жыл бұрын
Would be nice if it were cheaper, but I suspect that's just the cost of recouping the manufacturing costs. PCBs are really cheap. New molds for plastic shells -- not so much. Suck it up, or just wait while the rest of us amortize the cost of that investment. (And hope it's still around when you're ready.) Personally, I'm OK with paying $25 if it's built reasonably well. I've got a stack of 2-for-$9 eBay cables that weren't worth the money.
@jcchaconjr
@jcchaconjr 6 жыл бұрын
The Bluetooth chip makes up the bulk of that cost (because Licensing). That, added with the cost of the shell, is what makes up the resulting price of the adapter. The plastic is inexpensive; the tooling to fabricate it, is not.
@slashtiger1
@slashtiger1 4 жыл бұрын
@@jcchaconjr Are you kidding? There are plenty sub-$10 devices out there that use bluetooth... So you can't say that "Licensing" makes up the bulk of the costs... I'd say what makes up the biggest part of it would be R&D, as is quite normal.

Hot-damn! I just built a MiSTer and was keen to use some of the official wireless reproduction controllers I've seen, but was disappointed to find that the PAL version SNES controller is sold-out everywhere! This is exactly what I need! And since it also works with the controllers that come with the mini consoles, I'll have brand-new official shells that I can use!

It's almost the same as the FC30 or SFC30 controllers from 8 Bitdo. But without a case, without buttons, without a D-Pad, without silicone pads, without screws. And the rechargeable battery has only 180mA. I'm sure the battery in the "original" 8Bitdo controllers has at least 450mA. I would buy this kit for 10 bucks. But not more.

Really wish that 8btido would make a genesis receiver. While the original IR controllers are great, it would be neat to eliminate the point of view requirements that all IR controllers have to deal with. Like honestly, they are gonna have a mod kit for a genesis controller, but not make a receiver for it?

Any thoughts on running multiple controllers at the same time? Do they interfere with each other if in close proximity of each other? This would be a cool thing for a console party but if we had a lot of these kind of controllers in the same room I could see some possible issues.
@bruwin
@bruwin 6 жыл бұрын
Multiple controllers in the same room shouldn't make a difference. It's not too different than using a bunch of wiimotes with the wii.

I'm impressed. I'm wondering, though. If you add an upscaler to your SNES and hook it up to your HD TV, that introduces lag. Then, you use this mod kit on your SNES controller and introduces lag. How badly would that affect gameplay?
@RetroSho
@RetroSho 6 жыл бұрын
Not as much as you would think, actually. I have this very kit, as well as various receivers, all hooked up to the Framemeister upscaler. The lag isn't nearly as bad at all -- on games that are lag sensitive (Tetris Attack, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong Country), I don't notice it at all.

I wound up buying a snes classic controller and plugging it into my wii mote. It doesnt work on the wii with new super mario wii, but it does work with my switch if I use the 8bitdo adaptor.

@glitch8669
@glitch8669 6 жыл бұрын
I would love to see 8bitdo make that, but not many people use the dog bone so it probably won't make too much money, and me personally having the Gameboy type A and B button layout sucks and doesn't feel the best. However I enjoy the SNES type grip instead of corners on the original. Not to mention the SNES controller is decently similar to the bone, and with the NES receiver it would be close enough to a bone anyways.

@Hue Jackson Still, imo keeping the board would be better incase you want to revert back to having it wired or to make a spare SNES controller that doesn't work and have it work with that board if you want it to stay wired.

@letsplayclassicgames5024
@letsplayclassicgames5024 3 жыл бұрын
You can buy the silicone pads that go under the buttons very cheap, like shouldn't cost more than a few dollars! This is what has worn out over the years, replace them(which is incredibly easy to do) and it will feel like it did on day one.

I have an original SNES30 8bitdo controller and its d-pad has the same issue as the switch pro controller (unintended presses) and the same solution (tape). Does this board fix that issue? I less likely to use it if the d-pad gets worse, but at least it can be fixed. To those who think the retro receivers are overpriced, they are the best products 8bitdo make in my opinion. You can pair many modern controllers to it and in addition to connecting to a SNES, NES, or classic (depending on the specific one) they can also connect to computers via USB. I have no regrets over the two receivers that I own.

Will this wireless mod board works on a clone controller though?
@ThisDoesNotCompute
@ThisDoesNotCompute 6 жыл бұрын
I think it’ll depend on how the clone controller was made. If they took a mold of an original controller, then this kit will probably work. If they made them simply look like the originals from the outside, but designed their own molds, then probably not.

Repurposing an old controller with the original tactile feel so that it plays for other machines, for 20 dollars, is really good. 8bitdo is quite considerate in this area. I don't care about the receiver though.

@nickguy6820
@nickguy6820 6 жыл бұрын
BT delay isn't enough to care about, particularly if you're using an LCD TV anyway. Speed runners will sit 3 inches away from their CRT to eliminate the lag of photons traveling through space. Unless you plan on trying to beat SMB3 in 45 seconds, RF lag is on a timescale that doesn't apply to you.

I had no idea this even existed. It's a nice product idea, but I'm not sure if the idea of having an authentic controller housing would be worth mixing old, possibly malfunctioning components with a new board and hoping it all works, or if it would be worth having a proprietary cable. If it doesn't work out, that's all money that could have gone toward buying a pair of SN30 Pro's. I'd rather just do that.

I really don't see the point in this. Why not just buy one of the 8bitdo controllers with a shell? This is pretty much a worse version of that because of the proprietary cable. You get nothing from the internals of the original controller like the original switches inside for the buttons. It's not even the original controller at that point. You pulled the skin off some farmer and shoved a giant alien cockroach inside. It's not that farmer anymore. I own a regular 8bitdo SNES controller and enjoy it but this is goofy.
