I've fired a lot of surplus ammo in this series, but today's video is a S&B soft point hunting load. The results were very interesting to me!
If there is any information that you would like to know that is not included in this video, send an email to 8mmmauserman@gmail.com, or ask me in the comments!
Currently I have the following:
PPU 8mm
Late 70's Yugoslavian
Early 70's Romanian
Chinese
Canadian
Italian
Greek
Bulgarian
Ethiopian
Egyptian
FedArm
Israeli
Soft Point S&B
Late 40's Czech
Turkish
I am looking for:
50's Yugoslavian
Ecuadoran
Persian
German
Other commercial brands
Etc.

2700 FPS with a 196 grain? No wonder this thing kicks so damn hard. The velocity on the box says 2550 fps. That's nutty. Thanks for chronographing that. That works out to about 4300 joules at the muzzle. PPU is about 2000 fps on a Chrono from what I've seen.

I have a video on PPU as well. I'm going to try and shoot some of the ammo I already shot through the chrono to see if the change in elevation in the recent move changes anything.

Maybe it’s because the PPU load is based on the pre-spitzer IS load. It’s much faster than a 5.56 and 2.5x more powerful at a distance. 5.56 May start faster than an 8mm Mauser, but its featherweight 55-62gr mass means that it’ll tire very quickly. By 400 yards, 5.56 is already fallen to 50% MUzzle velocity or c. 1500 ft/sec. 8mm mauser reaches that threshold at 800 yards with Romanian ammo and 1000 yards S&B heavy ball. I call this “The Turtoise and the Hare” rule.

This is THE ammo in my opinion for a 98k or Yugo Mauser (or similar Mauser that able to shoot this hot of a load). It’s been much more accurate for me out of my 98k’s but it does kick a bit (just simple physics, big round moving faster=more kick)

This is my go-to round for whitetail deer. I have never had them run very far after getting hit by that SPCE bullet. I was able to get my hands on many many boxes back in the day. I use just three or four rounds a season, a few for sighting in & one more to get my deer. Normally I can get around one-inch groups at 100 yards, using a Leupold scope. I have a Husqvarna 640 rifle with a Hoque stock (as the original was cracked). I bought the rifle from Simpson LTD out of Galesburg IL, they still sell quite a few of these in 8mm if you are looking for a sporting Mauser that is set up for scope mounting.

I just had my Yugoslavian Mauser mounted with a scope and zeroed ........bought a scope rail from Bad Ace Tactical so I just had to remove the sight an install the rail without having to have it drilled. Curious how the S&B SPCE performed in hunting deer. While zeroing the scope with my father in law, we were using PPU and S&B ammo. My father in law felt that the S&B were hotter then needed to be for deer so I'm interested in info on the S&B performance.

The S&B 196 gr soft point cutting edge SPCE would be a good hunting round out to 200 yds. After that it tends to start dropping pretty drastically. It's not the most aerodynamic round. Would be pretty lethal on medium size game at close to moderate range.

S&B offers 8mm in both J bore .318" and JS bore .323". The JS bore comes in both SAAMI 35,000psi & CIP 56,560psi. The CIP ammo is pretty hot 🔥 Someone in the 90s imported tons of all their 8mm ammo. 8mm J, JS, JR & JRS. The R are rimmed 8mm cases for drillings. For some reason, they had a hard time selling everything but the JS ammo.

Hello 8mm Mauser Man. Obviously I took your kind advice and came here to your channel. Thank you for yet another thorough review. I have a bit of this S&B 196 gr SPCE in my possession along with the more standard 196 gr fmj from S&B. If memory serves correctly the fmj is a boat tail bullet and offers slightly better ballistics than the SPCE round. That said however that soft point round would certainly prove to be a very good hunting load out between 200 - 300 yards and I would be confident using that on medium to large North American game at those distances. Your point regarding use of this ammo in a Gewher 88 is well taken. My research also shows that the 88 also had a .318 bore diameter as opposed to the 98's .323 and this of course caused some unfortunate and catastrophic receiver and bolt failures. I'm told that many commercial producers of 8mm JS decreased the pressure loading of their cartridges as a means of reducing bad events from chambering a .323 diameter round in a .318 bore. Again my thanks for your good and informative review. All the best to you. Be safe.

I wanna say wow! This ammo is snappy wonder what there loading sources are. Alot of the old manuals have way higher velocities but seems like each new edition of manuals they release the powder charges just keep going lower and lower mainly for safety and lawsuit reasons imo which is why load data is so conservative now. One thing I want to mention as a handloader who had used S&B brass is that this brass is haaaaaaaard really hard brass, the amount of force to resize S&B brass is significant another thing I wanna mention is that S&B cases primer pockets are also smaller than other manufacturers as a result primers such as winchester large rifle will sit proud enough to the point there is notable risk in a out of battery detonation when chambering. The solution is rather simple tho and you just have use a primer pocket crimp remover to remove enough material so other primer manufactures can fit correctly. Highly recommend annealing S&B brass if you (anyone really) have the setup for annealing.

I’ll add another data point for you. I purchased a box of this while looking for a hunting load for my Zastava M-76. I prefer having a dual purpose rifle in that I can hunt and target shoot with. The problem is I had a lot of feeding issues with this cartridge due to my feed ramp design. This is a very common problem with SP cartridges with this design in my experience. I am also thinking there may have been some overpressure issues due to the bullet being pushed into the case during the loading cycle for those that did feed into the chamber. Just need to get a No-Go and Field Gauge to confirm that nothing occurred to the rifles headspace during my testing. I am planning to see how well it feeds in my Milsurp Bolt guns. This may end up being my hunting load of choice for those rifles.

This is real ammo, I used this also, but you must allways find European ammo if you want to see real power of this caliber. PPU is also not bad, but American version of PPU is a lot of weaker than it is in Europe, real reason for that are really old rifles in the US. I used Yugoslavian M48 rifle and it was amazing, just find the ammo with 8x57IS stamped on the box like this Sellier Bellot, you can find a PPU the same ammo and you will see the difference, but if you want to shoot a PPU, you must find 8x57IS, not 8mm Mauser because it is a lot of weaker. 8mm Mauser is for US market and 8x57IS or JS is from Europe for our European market and our hunters..
