I have 100 8mm incendiary "exploding" rounds. My grandfather got ahold of them before leaving Europe during WWII. The rifle came off a German soldier in Austria. During that time of the war Soldiers got 5 cents for every German weapon turned in. It's has the Nazi symbols on the bolt,barrel,bolt handle,buttstock all numbers from what I can tell are the same. He shipped it in a box labeled pool sticks. I have a luger and his issued 1911.

Thanks for the research and time you took. I've had an M98 Danzig made 1915 Mauser since 1980. It is a sporterized Interarms import with a bent/ spooned bolt and a low rise safe switch. I have primarily used it for deer hunting in the Catskill Mountains. I had originally intended to put a scope on it but it worked so well with the original sights I never did. It is the one rifle I have never considered selling. Thanks again for the info,!

I've been shootn' 8mm for 40 years. I liked your video a lot. WW2 German s.S. ammo loaded at P 25 (Metallwarenfabrik Treuenbrietzen) prior to 1943 is the best I have shot.I wish you could have covered Portuguese, but I guess you can't get them all. It's too bad that Privi and U.S. loaders are still expecting .318 bores with their puny loads. I think I have fired most everything you showed. Also Italian BPD 952 and Greek EnK 52 were very accurate with few miss fires. Thanks again for posting this.

Somewhere around 35 years ago, I got a great deal on some surplus 8mm ammo and I bought it! It is, I think, Portuguese and is head stamped FCPQ and dated 1944 and 1945. I believe it was VERY badly stored and now, I only use it for the very nice bullet and the powder as they mostly, don't fire because the primers are so badly corroded. What primers are good, one can still see a green ring around them. They used to be a very bright green but, now, after all the years of storage, they have faded. I no longer have an 8mm but, still hope to get another before I kick the bucket! If you'd like, I'll send you and handful of the best and worst examples, for your collection. When I first got them they either fired or they didn't, NO hangfires! They were faily accurate when they fired but, over half of them wouldn't fire so, only good for components and for an example of what they were! I reload and have a lot of components dies, etc! Thanks for the video!

I used to be in the ammo business in Phoenix Arizona from 1973 to 2013 and literally acquired and sold millions of rounds of 8 mm Mauser, particularly Portuguese and later Turkish and German surplus, being an outlet for j&g sales, century, samco, sarco, Pacific international, etcetera. Really enjoyed your video. Definitely agree about avoiding any German steel case surplus made after 1942. I know of later world war II German surplus that blew up mg34 and 42s. I also sold large quantities of American and Canadian manufacturer 8 * 57. It should be remembered that the czech Besa machine gun in that caliber was used by both the British and Germans. It was the tank machine gun, particularly for coaxial mounting. And huge quantities of 8/57 Mauser were made for the nationalist Chinese as well, both for Mauser rifles and for their Bren and zb26 guns in those calibers. Every bit of American and world war II Canadian that I ever fired worked very well, what was loaded to the max. I saw WRA head stamped 8 * 57 made during the war, that would blow the Opera on out of the German g43 every time you shot it. Again great video and if you're still into it I would like to see more!!

The German 198 gr sS rounds are the best I have fired through the K98. They are extremely consistent and accurate, and the ballistic coefficient of that heavy boat tailed round is an amazing .580+ G1. It comes as little surprise that the Germans shaped their V2 rockets after this round :)

Yes , always finding Argentina 7.65 and 30-06 mixed in when bought loose , with 308 as a filler of shorts , also found 270 Winchester in sealed 30-06 M-2 boxes from India , to most common problems Ive had , just take the time to inspect every single round , no hiccups or surprises. I have 18 different makers of 8mm , with the late imported Turkish being the only problematic of any , being stored poorly by apperence , but all throw a 3-4 inch group at 100 meters , G98 , 98K , 1903 , FN49, CZ24 , all working fine otherwise , great video work , well done.

thanks for the info on 8mm ammo! it gave me a good perspective on what to look out for! I have a 8x60 Magnum Mauser which was inherited from my grand father. It was in storage for the past 50+ years and almost never fired. In looking for ammo for it, I've identified they made two bore sizes for the same gun model: a .318 and a .323. From some research it seems like it's the .318. I'll only know for sure once we cast and measure the bore size. However, from what I read, 30-06 brass can be resized to fit it. What is your opinion about this?

I've used a lot of surplus 8mm and have found that most of the reliability issues revolve around the ammunition being improperly stored and - somehow - over the many decades, moisture has accumulated inside the case. I have a cure for this that is very effective, safe and cheap. I put the troublesome rounds in a cardboard box and set that on top of my oil-filled, radiator type room heater (ON THE LOW SETTING!!!). As long as the heater setting is not too high to place your hand on it, the cardboard box will not burn. The rounds can sit there for many days, slowly and safely being de-moisturized. This process eliminates the vast majority of misfires.

A friend of mine is a class 3 firearms dealer and has an MG-42. Back in the late 70s the steal cased German ammo was very common. We got 8000 rds of the steal cased ammo still in the MG belts once and found his MG-42 did not like the steal cased ammo and jammed it about every 5th shot. The steal ammo worked fine in the MG-34. We still came across German brass ammo from WWII and his MG-42 fired it fine. 8mm has all but dried up now days and I been cutting and forming 8X57 ammo from 30-06 brass.

The Round nose vs Spitzer. And conversions...
@HarborLockRoad8 ай бұрын
.318 vs . 323 bore. The round nosed pre 1905 ammo was for a smaller bore diameter on the 1888 to 1905 made German rifles, the bore was increased when the pointed spitzer bullets were introduced about 1905. The controversy with the gewehr 1888s are attributable to this. If it still has the original german barrel , it has the . 318 bore for round nosed ammo. But, most if not all the turked ones, especially the 88/05/35 have 1930s czech barrels that are unquestionably safe, and most of the 88/05s too. You can tell the difference by the barrel stampings, all the imperial markings are absent on the czech replacement barrel, and under the chamber is marked clearly ".321" ( yes . 323 bore, just brand new at the time, so tighter to allow for eventually wearing) never use spitzer in an original untouched gewehr 1888, be wary of the 88/05, and dont worry about an 88/05/35. And, for gods sake do not shoot a hanyang gewehr 1888/04 copy from china! Absolutely none of them were safe by western standards, and all had the . 318 bore for the round nosed ammo as thats all they ever used in china. The metallurgy is unacceptable, and they were used until completely worn out ... I have a wall hanger, and the bore is completely gone, even the chamber is loose as a goose! And be wary if youre lucky enough to get a pre ww1 gewehr 1898, as those had the . 318 bore made for the round nosed ammo before the introduction of the spitzer . 323 rounds. Hope this helps

@blueduck94092 жыл бұрын
The bulk of the European brass will be difficult to reload. They use 2 flash holes instead of one, and tye primer is different. In that brass there is an "anvil" inside the primer pocket and that would have to be drilled out, or down far enuff to fit modern primers in. ... if the brass is good, and you dont mind a ton of extra work, then some of it could be reloaded. I personally save that Euro brass for a time when i have no other choice. Pravi Partisan and Sellier & Bellot is reloadable.

My very favorite surplus ammo to shoot in my K98s is 1950s Yugo..... light recoil, accurate, no misfires (I installed 24 pound springs in both my rifles), cycles very easily. Turk, Portugese, Belgian and East German also very, very good. Egyptian is marginal, about 20% misfires, while 1960s Bulgarian is total crap; 25% misfires and hangfires on all the rest. Ecuadorian is good, but very, very hot; the high pressures make the action difficult to cycle.

A father of a freind of mine back in the 80s always shot surplus ammo. Well i was there one day he must have come across one of these proof rounds because the rifle backfired violently. He was standing and dropped the rifle. The rifle survived and his dad only suffered some facial burns.

I have problems getting my bolt open with the Yugo surplus, Turkish is better luck but I still have problems. What’s the cause?

Thank you. I personally had run across some old military 8 mm ammo but the boxes say 7.9 mm. way back in the old days there was a transition from.313 to .323 bullet diameter . of course my rifle was a m-39 from from Yugoslavia or Georgia marked 8x58, and I take that to mean post ww11 production. I have fired a number of times goes bang ok, no misfires , , just not super accurate. and bout what year did they change bullet diameters.??? PLUS there were some bullet design changes regarding brass bullets instead of cupernickle or guilding metal .that made a big difference in usable range back around WW1. . like from 800 to 1200 yards.especially in long range machine gun fire.I think same thing for accurate rifle fire. What do you think ???

8mm mauser is the US designation of the round. 7.92×57mm Mauser is the actual German name. look on wikipedia

Buzz Lightyear Lookalike// AKA Woodie the occaisional male chauvinist pig they changed diameter in 1905 so I guess that's not the accuracy problem. some ammo is not boat tail, like the Turkish is not. I know the ppu is. if that doesn't help I'd check the condition of the bore.

On the blue primer surplus.Can you pull the bullets with a bullet puller & polish them for salvage?.Or are they too far gone?.
