I used to be in the ammo business in Phoenix Arizona from 1973 to 2013 and literally acquired and sold millions of rounds of 8 mm Mauser, particularly Portuguese and later Turkish and German surplus, being an outlet for j&g sales, century, samco, sarco, Pacific international, etcetera. Really enjoyed your video. Definitely agree about avoiding any German steel case surplus made after 1942. I know of later world war II German surplus that blew up mg34 and 42s. I also sold large quantities of American and Canadian manufacturer 8 * 57. It should be remembered that the czech Besa machine gun in that caliber was used by both the British and Germans. It was the tank machine gun, particularly for coaxial mounting. And huge quantities of 8/57 Mauser were made for the nationalist Chinese as well, both for Mauser rifles and for their Bren and zb26 guns in those calibers. Every bit of American and world war II Canadian that I ever fired worked very well, what was loaded to the max. I saw WRA head stamped 8 * 57 made during the war, that would blow the Opera on out of the German g43 every time you shot it. Again great video and if you're still into it I would like to see more!!

Great review thanks. Unbelievably we actually have quite a bit of milsurp 8mm available right now. I just picked up a M48A Yugo and am looking at getting some surplus food for it. I also handload.

I know this video is 10 years old and most of the stuff in it is VERY useful, he does however make one error. The gas tube removal is actually very easy. All you do is first loosen the lock nut at the front of the tube where it inserts into the gas regulator. Then get a 5mm crescent wrench, or a 4" adjustable wrench and put either tool on the flat cutouts on the tube you will see about halfway down. Rotate the tube counterclockwise and it will unscrew from the gas regulator and then you can push it back through the receiver bridge and out the back. Once you get the tube off the gas regulator, unscrew the lock nut the rest of the way off the tube otherwise it won't fit as you push the tube the rest of the way out of the receiver. As you push the tube out it may be a bit of a tight squeeze but you can GENTLY tap it out with a rubber mallet. No need at all to remove the rear sight or sight base. It just screws out from the rest of the gas system and pops right out the back. Very simple. To reassemble, push the tube back the way it came out, screw the nut back on all the way bac kon, tighten the tube back into the threaded hole in the gas block, then turn the lock nut counterclockwise to cinch it back up against the gas regulator base.

I have a bunch of Romanian 8mm steelcase ammo, very clean, but very hard to extract. Is this normal with this ammo? I had the rifle checked for headspace & it checked out fine[Yugo m48].

Do you have any suggestions for reinserting the extractor and extractor spring? I'm assuming the spring nests in the groove (i.e. lower-tension) rather than flipped over (higher tension). But how about getting the extractor itself back into the groove, over the spring? Is there supposed to be a centimeter or so of extractor spring showing in the groove, after you've clicked the extractor into its place?

Yes , always finding Argentina 7.65 and 30-06 mixed in when bought loose , with 308 as a filler of shorts , also found 270 Winchester in sealed 30-06 M-2 boxes from India , to most common problems Ive had , just take the time to inspect every single round , no hiccups or surprises. I have 18 different makers of 8mm , with the late imported Turkish being the only problematic of any , being stored poorly by apperence , but all throw a 3-4 inch group at 100 meters , G98 , 98K , 1903 , FN49, CZ24 , all working fine otherwise , great video work , well done.

9:54 your Yugo round was likely made at the Bosnia-Montenegro plant. Code 12 was used as a load identification number or the month of manufacture. PPU used a Cyrillic letter code or number 11 for factory ID in the 50's.

I like the Turkish, Greek, and Yugo ammo. Its getting difficult to find anymore. For what they are asking for it now, i can buy reloadable brass, so that defeats the purpose of buying it.

I bought 5 15 round boxes on stripper clip of yugo m49. Finally got around to shooting it first round just click. Recocked it two more times nothing. Second round same thing. I was using my k kale Turkish Mauser which shoots ppu very well.. So I didn't even try the rest. I think I'm gonna pull the bullets and reload them into some ppu brass I have laying around. I also have two boxes of m75 sniper ammo and was thinking about shooting some of that but with it being hard to find idk

I am no expert but not sure why you would want to shoot any WW2 German ammo, it should be very collectible and rare at this point in time.
