Not only would a Shawn Michaels win in 1995 make the KOR lineage appear more prestigious, it would have made his rise to the WWF title at WrestleMania 12 feel more natural and organic. Shawn's babyface rise and title reign felt extremely forced and nearly half the audience was not enthused, making Shawn's reign the third swing and miss at creating a new undisputed top guy to replace Hogan. At least Warrior and Diesel's rise to the title felt natural and organic. It's a problem that would not be solved until someone uttered Austin 3:16 a couple months into Shawn's fumbled reign. At least Vince always had the HitMan to fall back on to keep things afloat the way he used the Macho Man whenever Hogan took a moviemaking break.

That's how I do my TEW fantasy booking sim games now when I play WWE. Royal Rumble winners get the Mania title shot, KOTR winners get the win in the middle of the summer and go on to face the champ at Summerslam!

I'd suggest a list of the 5 best and worst King of the Ring wins. Not WINNERS. A list not about the wrestlers who won them, but about the King of the Ring victories that had the most, and least, significant impact. Like Edge. Even though the man is a hall of famer, his King of the Ring win did almost nothing to elevate his career above the IC title scene. It took many more years still for the Money in the Bank and the Rated R Superstar gimmick to finally elevate him to world title.

If not Shawn Michaels in 1995, why not The British Bulldog? It would've created an interesting trend of keeping it within the extended Hart Family, a King gimmick would've made more sense for a guy from England and Bulldog would turn heel a couple months later and fight Diesel for the championship anyway.

The stip for KOTR tournament winner to challenge a world title holder is nice but just don't limit it to summerslam,keep it for a whole 2 years span. whenever a world champion is in need for a contender,the KOTR winner have first dib to go at the title in the next PLE. so it could mean something. and add an extra contender at the ready beside MITB briefcase winner being sneaky and royal rumble winner.

It truly needs a reboot being tied to the Royal Rumble. Have the qualifying matches throughout January leading to the Rumble and semifinals & finals at the Rumble. Those who failed to qualify or advance to the finals get automatic entry into the Royal Rumble. The Runners up get spot #30. The winners get an automatic shot at the WWE, World Heavyweight/Women's Championships respectively the same night, next night on RAW or next PPV.

The best thing about Billy Gunn winning King of the Ring was The Rock absolutely burying him about two weeks later. "Oh dear God, you see, my name's Billy, and I just won the King of the Ring. But there's one problem. Everybody still thinks that I absolutely suck." Which I guess illustrates this list's point. Because The Rock wasn't wrong. How can someone win an important tournament, and everyone still thinks they absolutely suck? Seems like a win like that should bring at least some respect - can you imagine a Royal Rumble winner getting buried like that and the crowd unanimously agreeing - but nope.

to me the issue is that the king of ring tournament needs some in-universe reason for why the world champion does not win every time. if its simply one on one matches and everyone seemingly being eligible to participate, the tournament can never mean anything or the world champion would enter as well. so i would add some stipulation like "only young wrestlers/wrestlers who never were world champion /..." or add some gimmick to the matches to disentangle it from the regular title dynamics

Hear me out. King of the Ring should be a December PPV that comes just before the ROYAL Rumble. Have the stakes be you get a choice. A title shot at RR OR the entry number of your choice in the RR match itself. And for anyone wondering why logic wouldn’t dictate that everyone goes for the title shot, imagine that your choice is you become champion now and then have to cling on desperately to go into Mania as champion, or give yourself the best opportunity to walk into that main event/title match at WRESTLEMANIA as the challenger. Could freshen the whole thing up too

The world title match incentive for Summerslam would be awesome for Summerslam. It gets more people genuinely invested in not only the King of The Ring but Summerslam itself. Think about it, "Biggest party of the summer" along with the winner of the tournament vying to take the world champion's crown, the world title itself.

Perhaps if the same person wins the tournament twice (or more) in a row, they have to do a gauntlet match against each opponent they had beaten in both (or more) tournaments. I don't think we're in the climate where going for more than two tournament wins would be a good idea booking-wise, but they'd have that there just in case.

Bret Hart is the only man to win the King of the Ring tournament, TWICE. He won it in 1991 and got a shot at the Intercontinental championship at Summerslam 91 against Mr. Perfect (And Won!!!) He won it again in 93. His reward? Getting beat down by Jerry "The King" Lawler. He faced him at Summerslam 93 and lost due to not letting go of the Sharpshooter and ref reversed the decision to a DQ win for Lawler

King of the Ring 2002 was an absolute joy and meant something. Lesnar vs. RVD in the finals was exactly what a launching pad tournament should be. The two biggest new stars WWE had at the time facing off to see who's better. Vince did know what he was doing for a very long time.....until he didn't o_o

The fact that WWE hasn't brought back the number one contender's stipulation for KOTR is stupid. Triple H NEEDS to reinstate that stipulation otherwise I have no reason to care for Gunther (or Ilja Dragunov) winning the tournament. Same goes for QOTR because even though it would be awesome to see Tiffany Stratton win, it would be more awesome to know she's getting a one on one title match at the following PLE.

He needs to bring back *A* stipulation, but the number one contendorship shouldn't be it. A year-long advantage of some kind is much more befitting and would differentiate it much more from MITB, the Rumble and the EC, all of which have a gimmick stipulation to cover their predictability problems which the KOTR doesn't.

Sorry but the "King of the Ring should be for a title shot" argument annoys the heck out of me. There are loads of number 1 contender brackets over the course of the year, the King of the Ring being just another one means it's both unecessary as a seperate gimmick AND...just predictable - especially if it's for a Summerslam main event - you just get the same problems as the EC and the Rumble (that there are only ever about two possible winners if that) but without the unique gimmick matches that make the problems go away. King of the Ring should absolutely come with a year-long benefit or stipulation (can't be DQ'd, can book matches that don't involve you, title matches you're in don't include a champion's advantage all year etc) that becomes the "Royal Privelege" but the "title match" stipulation either blows the wad on a midcarder having a one-off heatless match they're going to lose OR involved an established main eventer getting a title match they would have gotten anyway.

They need go to back to giving the winner of the tournament a title shot at Summerslam. They only did that twice (technically once). Kurt Angle was in a triple threat after winning in 2000 (although it didn't come directly from King of the ring). Then of course Brock in 2002 was the only year the winner received a title shot. They need to do that again. Having a tournament where the winner gets a crown and that's it? Get tf outta here. Give them a title shot.

See the thing is, at least my memory thinks this is the case, you never got a WWF/E title shot out right for winning the KOTR back then. The only time that was official was when Brock won it in 02.

They had plans for Billy, they just didn't go through with them. The combination of Austin not wanting to work with him, Billy not getting the reaction they wanted and Billy's asthma preventing him from working long matches (Last one according to Bruce Pritchard) halted whatever momentum Billy had. Not sure how Chyna was going to be different.

King of the ring should just be put up in the archives unless they do something to rejuvenate it. Booker t also suggested the same. I don't know when did he say that but I am pretty sure he said that. King of the ring is irrelevant at this point.
