How can one even begin to describe Ralph Bakshi? From being an animation rebel to a fearless trailblazer, this underrated Master of Animation here not only gave a new definition to modern animation but also revolutionized the medium in films with his outstanding body of work. Bakshi, who actually began his career as a cel polisher working at the Terrytoons television studio ended up being a recipient of a number of prestigious awards that includes the 1980 Golden Gryphon for The Lord of the Rings at the Giffoni International Film Festival, the 1988 Annie Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Art of Animation and the 2003 Maverick Tribute Award at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival. While it is true that his contentious, bold, envelope-pushing oeuvre did attract a lot of people not appreciating his opus, Bakshi simply did not let any of that affect him from generating some of the most spectacular stuff on screen. One of his most famous and extensively used animation trick happens to be Rotoscopy, a technique in which the scenes are first shot in live-action and then traced into animation cels. So, you will be quite surprised to know the main reason behind him resorting to this animation technique. Apparently, 20th Century Fox denied Bakshi’s request for a $50,000 budget increase, something that was primarily essential to finish his 1977 animated flick, Wizards. This actually drove him to make use of Rotoscopy and voila, that’s how he took care of the unfinished war scenes. Of course, he nailed it!
Well, in today’s video, we are going to talk about nine brilliant, satirical, rotoscopic animated movies of Ralph Bakshi, the iconoclast of animation.

Ralph Bakshi is certainly a pioneer and innovator. For example, creators and fans of things like Heavy Metal, Ren and Stimpy, South Park, and Futurama all owe Bakshi a debt. Now, do tell us, WHAT exactly has Peter Jackson pioneered and influenced? .. . zilch!

The mention of Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings, always has me reliving the day I went to the premier in NYC back in the 70’s. No one in the audience had a clue that it was incomplete. When the scene of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum heading towards Mt. Doom with Gollum saying “We shall see..” suddenly faded to black and the credits rolled, we all looked at one another with a WTF? expression. I should note, that future releases of the film, switched the two final scenes making the Battle of Helms Deep the end scene. That voice over stating so concludes the first part….was also added. Originally though, we were left totally in the dark…..

I honestly prefer the Bakshi version to the Jackson one. It seems much truer to the story/characters to me. I've only ever seen the switched ending version though, I was a little kid in the 80s, so never saw it until we rented it in the late 80s or early 90s.

Bakshi is a master ... as a kid i was fascinated by all his wacky films, like Fritz the Cat, Coonskin and Wizards, as his style so so so different from all the commercial crap, that it really shines. This was wonderful! Been a fan of Bakshi's since the early 70's! I was so upset because he never finished his version of Lord of the Rings. I heard it was because Rankin/Bass released their version quickly, before he could do his. Their version sucked! A complete Lord of the Rings by Bakshi would have been the ultimate must- have! Thank you for this!

Its funny how he "Ran out of money" to finish Lord of the rings but would continue on making plenty other fine works of art. I would have loved to see Lord of the Rings completed. Late, but an interview conducted with Michael Grais by one of the guys at /Film revealed that, more or less, the general story remains the same as the script that Grais and Mark Victor submitted to Bakshi and Mancuso, Jr. One notable difference is that Jack Deebs was a tattoo artist who murdered a woman, then went onto become a comic book creator by making Cool World and Holli Wood, who was a sexy punk girl at that point, and he moved into the house across from the dead woman's after he's released from prison. Like in the final film, Deebs thinks that Cool World and Holli are his creations when they were actually planted in his head. However, Grais and Victor never quite managed to perfect that third act, which certainly was different in their script. From the sound of it, uncredited writers were hired, after a regime change at Paramount, to rewrite their script.

Ralph Bakshi is a modern day Picasso. His originality is top tier. Sadly, his name isn't a household name like Disney....

Ralph Bakshi is certainly a pioneer and innovator. For example, creators and fans of things like Heavy Metal, Ren and Stimpy, South Park, and Futurama all owe Bakshi a debt. Now, do tell us, WHAT exactly has Peter Jackson pioneered and influenced? .. . zilch!
