I believe Mike's "free refill" culture shock is part of a different "dining policies" cluster in US. I spent a couple of years regularly on business in US. What always bugged me about dining was the unwritten eat and leave policy, essentially once you had your last bite the waiter will nicely ask "anything else?" and bring the bill, if you say no. I like the German option of being able to meet someone, an old friend, a new acquaintance, colleagues or whomever for dinner and then potentially chat away till the end of the night. But here is the thing of why this "kick-out" policy kind of made sense to me. If the owner of the place makes his money mainly from meals and less from drinks, he optimizes his revenue by increasing the table turnover rate. But he doesn't have a direct handle on the turnover, but the waiters do, so the owner doesn't pay the waiters a decent salary and all of a sudden the waiters depend on tips i.e. on the number of parties he or she squeezes tru per shift. So the owner seems to be the good guy in the story, last not least he offers free drinks, but my "socialist" German heart is bleeding, he is exploiting the waiters, leaving it to his customers make up for it. The waiters are screwed. The customers are taken away the opportunity to show their appreciation for great service by tipping appropriately and enjoy the full evening without being kick out of a place, but at least they got free drinks.

I was born and raised in Germany. I did my required hours of driving school and driving exam in Germany. I've lived in Florida for 40 years and I never got used to the way people drive here. It's insane! Basically anything goes. After a hurricane we had a road closed due to some minor damage and literally EVERYOENE went around the sign and just took that road. Mike be proud of your German accent. I try to pronounce my words as best as I can but I still have an accent. Americans don't care. They're always nice about it. Enjoy Florida!

The red arrow light is like the "Grüner Pfeil" adopted for germany from eastern germany: The traffic light shows red but You can turn right if the traffic allows it. BUT, you have to stop first and look! It's no you can drive if the traffic light shows red! It's like a Stop-Sign!
@GlenHunt
@GlenHunt 6 ай бұрын
-I'm totally with Mike on the stupid red arrow traffic light. Why did we need that when a regular red light worked the EXACT SAME WAY?? Here we have some flashing left yellow lights underneath a steady left red arrow. Like...what?! -4-way stops are either an exercise in being so polite you disrupt everyone's journey, or it's a test to see who can be the most aggressive. When I started driving in Europe I loved the priority sign and only cross traffic stopping. Much safer and friendlier. Also roundabouts are wunderful when everyone knows what to do. -Buzzards are like falcons, but we have those too. Lots of animals pooping. It's just everywhere in Florida. That's why the tourist board recommends bringing rubber boots. (Okay, not really.)
@user-sm3xq5ob5d
@user-sm3xq5ob5d 6 ай бұрын
The turn-right light is there to have a green solely for turns to the right while the straight direction (and left turns) have red. Because the traffic from the left has also a green to turn left exclusively. That is because there is usually so much for that direction that they cut out a timeslot for the traffic turning left. And to not have the inconvenienance that comes with "turn right on red" to happen they installed an arrow. That way nobody turning right has to check on and stop for the traffic coming from the left.
@GlenHunt
@GlenHunt 6 ай бұрын
@@user-sm3xq5ob5d That's what I also used to think, but that's now what I see. At intersections where the left lane gets a green for left and u-turns, the perpendicular traffic has a right green arrow, but they still have to sotp for u-turning traffic. Other intersections have a green arrow in the right lane, but the oncoming left-turn traffic also has a green, which is somehow supposed to tell the right turners to yield to the oncoming left turn traffic. It's messed up and is done differently in different places. What we had worked wonders. What Europe does is the best I've seen.

A red arrow allowing to drive ... that's quite weird. How often do accidents occur at that crossing ? A red light should have an unambigeous meaning and that's "Stop, danger!" Maybe they should consider using an extra colour like light blue or purple.
@jessicaely2521
@jessicaely2521 6 ай бұрын
That would confuse the Floridians even more. You have to keep things stupid and simple for the backwoods Floridians. I thought it was illegal for the 2nd right turning lane to turn right on red. That's the way it is in South Florida. If you aren't in the far right right lane, you can't turn right on red. In South Florida, with this law, there aren't many accidents with right on red. When you add the 2 lanes being able to turn right on red, there are more accidents. I only know 2 lanes. There are more accidents because I used to live in Tennessee, and there it's legal to turn right on red from any right-hand turning lane.

LOL, the four-way stop thing Mike was correct, right side goes first just hardly anyone knows so they don't follow the rule. Also, the right turn on the red with multiple lanes is usually just right turn from right lane only unless there is a sign that says otherwise or a traffic cam for me is a rule because of the possible tickets. Florida is a little tricky, most especially in South Florida. I've seen drivers break rules in front of law enforcement, and they don't do anything. Heck, I've seen law enforcement break rules, too. 😆 I love you guys. Thank you for the content. ♡♡♡

Here, we also watch A LOT of American TV channels, but I never get used to the enormous amount of medicine commercials, which is not allowed on Canadian TV channels. Unfortunately, Americans treat health care as a business (a very lucrative business). One of the most common culture shocks I go through every time when visiting the US as a German is to fill up the car at a gas station. Renting a car you don't know it's average fuel consumption and also don't know the size of the tank. So as soon as you are running low on gas thus driving to a gas station it's always a guessing game about how much fuel you need to refill it up completely. So first difference is that you have to prepay before filling up. However you soon notice that using international credit cards often don't work at the pump using the normal "PIN" you would use for withdrawal as well as that some gas station don't accept specific card brands like AMEX at all, so just swiping your card at the pump is mostly not an option and you have to go inside the shop for prepayment. And after filling up you have to go inside once more to get a reimbursement of the too high prepay....

I think, Mike has a Bavarian accent. So no accent that he doesn’t have when speaking German. If that makes sense.

I live in DC. Most of us stop at the red right arrows and we do not go until the arrows turn green. Many times there’s also a sign that says you cannot turn right when there are red arrows.

I agree with him about the traffic. A roundabout is much better. Same with green arrow to the right. A red arrow says that it is forbidden to drive.

"And _Mike_ had the audacity to say, 'What accent?'" 😆No one thinks they have an accent. I mean, the _Scottish_ accent is quite distinctive, according to _everyone_ but the Scotts. _They_ will tell you they are the _only_ people in the world who speak normally.

I agree with Mike about the red arrow. Red combined with trafficlights is aways "stop" . Especially if right turns are allowed generally. Enjoy the Mike videos!! ❤😂

The red arrow light means you are NOT allowed to drive on red! That's what the green arrow light is for. We have those in Canada also but on the traffic light there is also a sign not to turn on red. Many people still do.

You are wrong. In the state of FLORIDA unless there is a sign that clearly states NO TURN ON RED then you can use both red arrow lanes to turn on red. Most of our red arrowed lanes do not have signs that state NO TURN ON RED. It is legal and it is allowed in the state of Florida- where I am living, where this video was filmed, and where I am driving. Not Canada.

Oh hell, Mike is staying here for good. He's getting his license here! WELCOME!! I enjoy round abouts. But people just don't understand them. Whoever is in the round about has the right of way. You just can't enter a round about willy-nilly! Mike is correct about the 4 way stop. Whoever is to the right goes 1st. Ahh, Mike you DO have an accent!! And a very strong one!! 😅😅. Thats ok, I live in NC and have lived here over 30 yrs and people still pick up on my NY accent 😂😂

In Germany people are able to do parallel parking, even uphill backwards. Try making an American do that to get their driving license.

People in Florida cannot drive and do not care. Passing in the emergency lane or on/off ramps, most aggressive car goes at a 4 way stop, clockwise in a roundabout, motorcyclists lane splitting... pretty much anything goes! 🥴 Stay safe out there!

I don't hear Mike's accent, but I've lived with a Swiss that speaks German for 9 years. The big difference between Mike and my husband is Mike is more soft-spoken and mumbles some (sorry, Mike. I'm being honest. Your English is very good). My husband is loud and makes sure he enunciates his words. My friends tell me my husband sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger 😂. Once in a while, I hear the German in him (our daughter has a fever, so he says she has hot, not she is hot).

Mike is correct if he’s speaking about the 4way stop. The car on the right should proceed first of course people don’t do this but that’s what I learned many moons ago. Love Roundabouts,and so glad the US is changing the dreaded H intersection to them. Okay, carry on. Mike I’m with you on the wildlife of Florida way too many reptiles,particularly the alligators 🐊 ( live in Wisconsin) and it’s Hot! Anyway,hope you continue to enjoy your holiday here. Cheers

DAZN is not so expensive as said in the video, they offer different packages, the "all inclusive" package (official name is "universal" package which includes all sports) costs 29,90 / month if you pay yearly (12 Month Abonnement). DAZN has commercials, but they show only commercials in official breaks (in "Fussballspielen" for example only in "Halbzeit"). They do not interrupt any actions. If you pay monthly without abonnement, it raises to 44,90€ per month. Anyway, DAZN still suffers from big losses. The rights for the sport events are very expensive.

I would interpret a red arrow light as a stop until it turns green. In MN where I live now, the red arrows are interpreted that way. Signage and signal in the US can be very confusing. The European style roundabouts are supposed to be safer, but the older traffic circles in the US were very unsafe.
