If you want indigenous stories there are a few options: Ten Canoes (a feature length movie telling a story of the peoples of Arnhem land), Rabbit Proof Fence (another movie, telling the story of the Stolen Generation, which is a dark and sad story) and finally, Storm Boy (not specifically about Aboriginal Australians but features David Gulpilil as a major character and he is also in the other two movies, an amazing actor).

The Tracker, starring David Gulpilil is another great film. Also the documentary Gurrumul, about late Aboriginal musician Gurrumul Yunupingu, is outstanding. Filled with his beautiful music, it also provides background to his Yolngu culture. If you haven’t heard any of Gurrumul’s music, I highly recommend you do.

@@thebossman1997 You could try to contact the networks, such as Seven West Media for Home and Away and A Country Practice. The Nine entertainment company for Hey Hey It's Saturday, Water Rats and any other shows. Network 10 for Neighbours. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation for Heartbreak High, Play School, and possibly Sea Change. Crocodle Dundee is film series. Blue Heelers may have been on the Seven Network or Nine Entertainment. The Man from Snowy River is a film as well i think.

"The Dish" is another classic - it tells the story of the part that a small town of Parks played in the 1969 moon landing (it is a fictionalised version of a true story). A recent movie is "Top end Wedding' staring Miranda Tapsell who is a talented Indigenous actress - it is just a fun movie but shows the Tiwi Islands in the North of Australia which does not often make it into film and TV. She is also in "The Sapphires" which is a movie based on a true story about a women singing group in the 1960s - which also stars the AMAZING Deborah Mailman. take a look at Deborah's work to see some fantastic First Nations stories including Bran Nue Dae and Rabbit Proof Fence (and she has also done a lot of amazing work on TV)

From the 90's "Acropolis Now", a sit com about a young Greek man who has to take over his families Cafe, just as the old regulars start dieing off and the suppliers up their prices and reduce their terms of credit he finds out the business is heavily leveraged and may not survive unless they can bring in lots of new customers,

As an Australian I really love this channel, however despite being over 60, I've never heard of any of these TV series ... maybe its a 'chick thing' (a bit of Ozzy slang there), but to understand Australian culture its also good to know of our long and complicated relationship within the English commonwealth. Australian 'mate-ship', the 'ANZAC spirit' and our outback connections are all born from those times. So a collection of Australian movies must include ones like ... RED DOG, THE DISH, CROCODILE DUNDEE, RATS OF TOBRUK, BENEATH HILL 60 and MAD MAX. Its true that some of these are not comedies, but these movies contain many truisms of our national character and are worth watching. But yes ... THE CASTLE is a definite classic. Keep up the good work LIVING SIMPLY AUSTRALIA.

Over 60 too and I don't claim any authority given my age. Lots of older idiots in Australia among the brilliant ones. Your comment "I've never heard of any of these TV series ... maybe its a 'chick thing'" is patronising at best or misogynistic at worst. Sorry to be harsh but you are only expressing a closed point of view where this channel offers something more interesting. You haven't seen this persons media views then please go watch them... I would thoroughly recommend them myself as they show a contemporary Australian experience and less of a fantasy take of your film list. Please open your mind to the many experiences of being an Australian.

Very interesting and enjoyable. I'd like to recommend some other films which might bring a broader perception of Australia and Australians. Mystery Road and Goldstone are part of a set of films set in the Outback. I'd also suggest a series called 'Rake' which is a funny reflection of Australian disdain for social status.

Bonus points for Fisk and Utopia. Fisk is very under-rated. I'd also suggest The Hollowmen and The Games for shows in the same vein as Utopia. For a look at the darker side of Australian culture, the movie Two Hands and the three season series Mr Inbetween are definitely worth watching. The problem with a lot of Australian movies is that we're more comfortable revisiting the past but Kenny is a quintessentially modern take on Australia.

Hey for a foreigner you’ve got a great taste in tv shows, Actually that’s harsh, your not American, who cram our TV with dog shite, therefore I haven’t bothered getting the thing to get digital TV and download everything I watch, I always miss what’s happening on the ABC and SBS. There are a few shows you should check out from the late nineties like front line, the games well anything John Clarke or the D generation do is pretty good, and see if you can see bits of the late show from the early 90’s. Also there was a show Sea Change they redid a few episodes I think it was a bit shit but the original 24 or so episodes are really good. There is heaps more but my DVDs are packed and my quick load memory worse. Cheers, hope you enjoy your stay,
