Here is 7 more strategy games more I would recommend for anyone interested: 1. Ancestors Legacy - This really just medieval Company of Heroes. Minimal base building, units with moral that capture resources and set traps, etc. If you played Company of Heroes, you know exactly what you are getting into. Skirimishes are alright, but I really love campaigns and it is worth it for that alone because there are many campaigns and it will take you at least 50 hours to finish everything. 2. Northgard - Never played campaign, but I do love skirmish, or rather 4x game. This is actually 4x rts. You build bases, gather army in and collect resources like in RTS, but you are also building a colony, have quests and expand like 4x. It is a nice cozy game that I highly recommend, although I wish many of those factions were part of the game and not DLCs, but I am willing to forgive that because it is a indy title where they made all of that AFTER releasing a good game. 3. Cossacks 3 - Made by the same guys who made STALKER, it is a simple RTS really. However, it is set in 17th-18th century and you are commanding army of thousands. It doesn't sound special, but if you love that time period and love to watch giant armies in regiments clashing, then this is for you and honestly, simple, clear and fun game is the only way I can describe it. 4. Ancient Wars: Sparta - Unfortunately, I played this game long time ago, so my memory can be deceiving. It is a game about Persians, Greeks and Egyptians (I've heard they added other factions like Romans and Phoenicians) fighting somewhere in Hellenic Age. On a surface it is a standard game with resources, units and heroes. What is not standard are type of units who are completely costomizable. So, let's say you play as a Greek, you have good armor, but poor ranged units. You menage to kill some Persian archers, you take their bows to barracks, and now some of your armored units can fire Persian bows. Naval combat also consisted of ramming and boarding as well as firing with archer units, which I can't name any other game doing that. I remember having fun and it is currently in Early Access as devs picked from abondenware and now are adding their own stuff. However it is also a Russian game and political situation there at the moment is not good so there may be some hindrance in development (at least the original was made by Russians, the new one with extra content I am not sure). 5. Field of Glory 2/Empires - Field of Glory is actually a tabletop wargame. Field of Glory video gamea serves for the poor peasants like me who can't afford collecting miniatures, because there are no wargame miniatures in my city (there used to be Warhammer fantasy). It is a fun game if you are into wargiming. Field of Glory: Empires is a fun grand Strategy game that did something Paradox spectacularly failed and that is actually explaining the mechanics of the game and not drowning people with DLCs. If you have Field of Glory 2 base game (DLCs are campaigns you don't need them much), you can export Field of Glory: Empires battles into Field of Glory 2 and actually directly command the army. Recommended only for great battles. 6. Partisans 1941 - This is a Commando game. If you don't know what it is, you are controlling a set of elite soldiers (5-6) in order to achieve certain objectives. How you do it, depends on the objective and equipment of your Partisans. If you ever played Commando, Desperados or the new Shadow Tactics game, then you know what that game is and it is very fun. 7. Warhammer 40K Gladius - It is a 4x game in Warhammer 40K, made by 3 guys and they did very good job. It is a game only about fighting. The best way to play is you get in and play it some time, then leave. It is not hardcore game and it doesn't pretend to be one. It is a simple 4x game, but fun and with enough depth to keep you engaged and experiment. Game also has unorthodox campaign, where trough certain actions you get, you can beat the game and ignore the opposition. Mind you, this is not an easy task and as a Necron in final mission I got destroyed, even tough neighboring Adeptus Mechanicus, couldn't care less about me.

Empires of Undergrowth is literally a spiritual successor to Empire of The Ants. Retro Commander looks like what if Command & Conquer had a bastard child with Advance Wars. I like this. Edit: Also I really wanted to go and pre-order SoaSE2, but dammit it's on EGS. I hate that place.

Rogue Command is really neat, it has a demo out. It's developed by 2 people and has a very fun little art style, and the roguelike/deck builder twist on an RTS works surprisingly well.

Foxhole isn't an RTS however it does feel like one as its based of them is how I would've described. It's like you play the units you often see in RTS games.

Still surprised Barkhan isn't mentioned, but yeah, it very strongly plays into the classic DUNE RTS games and currently has a playable demo going for it

I really hope these do well. I especially want to see all of the triple A studios suddenly heel-turn and make an RTS out of every franchise they own whilst saying in interviews "Literally nobody wanted a new RTS game until a week ago"

I have been playing Foxhole for a few years now and I must say it is an excellent game. It has some flaws, sure, mostly with technology simply not being available. But they make the game far from bad. Devs are passionate and work with community, community itself is for the most part made of gold, with people helping each other and gameplay has many ways to go. Logistics, Armor, Partisaning, Frontline, Artillery... A great game really

Try Nebulous: Fleet Command. No strategy later right now just ship building and tactical battles but they are fire. Incredible detail and surprisingly well balanced and polished considering the complexity of design and early stage of development.

I'd also like to mention an up and coming indie title, nebulous: fleet command. Right now it functions mostly as a PVP wargame (which is already really quite fun), with the main selling point being highly customizable ships and fleets. It's in early access right now, but the next major update is going to include what is essentially a 4x multiplayer campaign mode, with logistics, fleet movements and ship designs each being handled by separate groups of players (or 1 player if you decide to play against AI). It's really quite good right now so I'd highly recommend checking it out.

I just want to add Gates of Hell into the mix, it's relatively new and is a solid addition to the Men of War games (though under a different name). It's been good fun to play through recently.

The last one was song of conquest. A heroes of might magic like game in full gorgeous pixel art. It's still in EA but feel complete enough to fully enjoy. That's the case

I also recommend "NEBULOUS: Fleet Command" if you need something to scratch your tactical space-combat itch. It's still in early access, I tried it out some time ago, but it was already very solid then. There's also a demo available on steam, if you don't want to commit to it yet.

I'm not as deep into strategy as most guys here seem to be but I've gotta recommend ultimate general civil war, it's just a single player campaign but the ai is really decent. You have to manage an army and fight a camaign of some really big battles.

Completely addicted to Terra Invicta rn. Gotta admit it was hard to get in, because there's some UX issues and a lot of promts that boil down to 1 or 2 important pieces information that have mucho texto and therefore it slows down your decision making process because you have to read too much to get the important information. Other than that I think its really good. I advise you to play your first game on cinematic difficulty so that you can just try out stuff without being punished too hard.

Starship Troopers: Terran Command is out but still being updated. Similar to Dawn of War 1: 40K . Closer to squad tactics. The narrator/tutorial voice is in universe propaganda. They nail the feel of out-swarming the bugs. The late game units are OP so it kinda feels like a rush to get higher tech on harder difficulty. Difficulty is only health/dmg scaling ATM. Capturing bases or doing objective gets u resources. No mining, etc. If a squad/unit dies u get refunded for another. Wars of attrition, not single deathballs. If u want the best bang for ur buck u could wait or get something else. Very fun, but needs more polish. Also playing through Empires of the Undergrowth right now. The campaign feels detached, havent tried the shit ton of alternate/scenario modes yet. The normal missions have u control a new colony of various types (fire, leafcutter, etc) from scratch each time. When u complete them u get rewards for a (sort of) persistent nest. Expand ur nest and upgrade ants light RPG style. After completing a harder nest challenge u unlock the next couple missions, runs and repeat. I dont think ur nest upgrades affect the normal missions. Somewhere between an RTS and TD. Dungeon Keeper vibes for sure.

Sometimes I really wonder if the rts genre can actually be saved. Is there really any reason to be excited about any of this when you could simply play one of the 15-20 rts classics? Most old rts games still feel fresh given the slow progression of the genre, while a lot of this is just very low budget and underwhelming.

You always seem to imply that grand strategy games/4x games aren't RTS, but I disagree. As long as the game plays in real time and is mainly focused on strategy, it still is an RTS, or at least has RTS elements. Just the scope is different.
