I think the article sidesteps the issue here; most people get to a point where they're aware that an amount of money needs to be spent on their vehicle and conclude the money would be better spent on an upgrade, hence a PX. What I can never understand is people buying a car with a nice set of factory alloys fitted and then never cleaning them to the extent they become ingrained with brake dust and look dreadful.

I have to 🙋‍♂️ to that! Mine is seriously bad,it hasn't been washed since at least October, probably before that. In my defence I moved house in October and went from on street parking on a busy bus route where washing it was impossible DIY and when I did put it through a rollover machine it was a waste of time, especially in the autumn and winter. Now, I do have a driveway but no garden tap at the front, mid terrace so I'm kind of screwed. I've just ordered a hose to go through the house so I'll see if I can get that to work over the spring and summer until I can get a tap fitted at the front. The annoying bit is the water main is under my drive so I could easily get it tapped into and a tap fitted at the front, it's just the cost.

Really strange when people write careful lady owner as a plus thing. Maybe I'm generalising but they usually scratch the cars / don't bother parking further away to avoid car park dings/ don't change gears / treat clutch nice/ kerb alloys/ have jewellery that scratches the interior/ heels that cut the carpet/ nails that scratch the door handles. Also very little interest in maintenance. I'm generalising of course but basing it on my female relatives/ friends and missus

The perception about modifiers is wrong…. People who spend money of modifications, tend to cherish and look after their cars far more than a regular person. Most people see cars as a means to an end…gets you from a-b….. Scratches, chips etc etc….most people wouldn’t even consider getting it fixed….. Car enthusiasts by far look after their cars the best, with usually no expense spared.
@dangosypethau
@dangosypethau 2 ай бұрын
It surely depends on the car and the modifications especially if the car is a nail to begin with...bit like modifying your house, it may be to your taste but others might not approve when you sell it. However I agree that quality upgrades may add value and attract a more niche type of customer.
@stuartcraigon2003
@stuartcraigon2003 2 ай бұрын
Depends where enthusiast ends and boy racer begins! I suspect a lot of people would see a modified car and rightly assume its been crashed. The other problem is that modified cars tend to have illegal mods like d cats, deletes and maps. There's a lot of ignorance in the car scene about illegal mods and mot failures, sadly a lot of mot testers illegally pass modified cars that do not meet the mot standard because they too are enthusiasts or boy racers.

@dangosypethau the street we live in now we had a choice of 3 houses to buy, all exactly the same. We chose the most expensive because it was literally a blank canvas. One of the others had a dark walnut kitchen and loud wallpaper so we would have had to decorate before we moved in. The 3rd one had the smallest garden with a bazaar drop at the end and steps down to the back gate. It had a brand new boiler and a fairly new kitchen but we dismissed it because the garden was too short and the drop wasn't safe for our dogs.
@thestig779

@@dangosypethau Well most sensible car enthusiasts don’t drive nails anyway. Also car enthusiasts don’t tend to scrimp on maintenance either. It’s usual to see cars over maintained, rather than under.
@thestig779
@thestig779 2 ай бұрын
@@stuartcraigon2003 it’s ridiculous to automatically think a modified car has been crashed…. That’s like saying anyone with a modified car spends their nights on a McDonald’s car park doing doughnuts…. The country is full of car enthusiasts who show their cars at organised events race meetings etc etc…probably had more spent on wheels than most ordinary people spend on 10 years of servicing….. Also maps are not illegal….nor is swapping out cats for a sports version or equivalent.

All good things to consider, I’ve just part x’d my Ford bmax for a Vauxhall crossland x - was just replacing, the Ford was 11 years old still in good nic 55k on the clock and decent mot left. Had it valeted, £30 - gathered all the service history & previous documents, tidied the little jobs inside (snapped parcel shelf hanger etc Was offered £2500 for it but shopped around and got £3k and a better price on a the replacement so it’s worth shopping around definately 👍 Don’t expect huge money on your part x - be realistic the dealer will want to make money on it too, could’ve sold my Ford for £4500-£5k but this takes the hassle out of it and I’m really pleased with the deal I got! Happy days everyone, hope you’re doing well!

This is a fantastic summary of the things to consider before trading in your car! Especially the point about the second key - I hadn't thought about negotiating with a dealership based on the replacement cost. Another tip that might be useful for viewers is to be prepared to walk away from a lowball offer. Do your research beforehand to know what your car is realistically worth, and be willing to sell it privately if the dealership isn't offering a fair price.

I’ve just PX my 2020 Ford Focus which is near mint condition and was given £1500 over the book price. I was stunned I must admit and traded it in for a spotless Ford Kuga. If you take care of your car/ motorbike I’ve always found dealerships will give you a better price. Love the content keep up the great work. All the best Graham. ❤️

When I worked in a garage in 1967 I used to recon most Ford engines were done by the time they had done 60000 miles.BMC A series engines would happily do 100000 miles. The garage had a Morris van it was like a larger version of the Morris minor, it had a B series 1500 cc engine and that had done 150000 miles and ticked over like a watch. In the seventies a garage wouldn't PX my Triumph 2000 because it had a different steering wheel that I didn't put on.

I live in the USA but many of the same rules apply here but with some exceptions. One is that the receipts/invoices are rarely kept with a trade-in (=part exchange) here unless specialty work done. if service, repairs done at a dealer or some chain garages, if in a reported accident or a insurance claim payout ('totalled') or used as a taxi, or commercial, here Carfax and other vehicle history online services will have that info. For sure a good clean up is worth it. Curb scrubbed wheels can and will hurt value due to need to refurb or replace. Take out worn aftermarket floor mats. Don't do bodgy, cheap paint touch up or repairs on the body or engine as will also cut the value. Also make sure the owners manuals are with the vehicle (remove/black out personal info).

All dependent on the type, age or expectation of value but badly scuffed alloys (especially on more exec/sporty cars) or tow bars (can be seen as a saving of £500 by some or hard use by others) can have an impact with dealers.

Your comment on smoking in a car is interesting. I had the misfortune to unknowingly buy a car that had been smoked in (the dealer had presumably had the interior of the car cleaned to disguise the smell which worked for a very short period of time!). Despite me having the car's interior professionally washed and the pollen filter replaced immediately, the smell didn't completely go away for about two years. The smell wasn't constantly there, but noticeable particularly on hot days. I obviously won't now buy a car that I know has been smoked in; and specifically ask the dealer and make extra checks like smelling the service book ;-). If a car smells too nice on a test drive, that raises a red flag.

Number 9 is where most people fall down when they complain about Ford wet belts. They say the van has been fully serviced but they are liars and they know it. The wet belt issue is down to a dpf software fault. It let's diesel run into the oil sump which attacks the rubber in the belt and it snaps. A lot of transit owners complai bitterly about design etc but it's entirely down to user error.

Disagree on the two key thing. Firstly, purely from a practical perspective if you only have one key you have no redundancy at all if that key gets lost. Secondly, as we learnt many years ago…if the seller supposedly doesn’t have the spare key…where is it…maybe someone’s going to collect you new car later….

There a channel on here called auto planet that dovlogs on high mileage cars in Holland. Many simple cars peugeot 206, Berlingo, Citroen ax all little petrol engines with 500+ kms on 300k miles. Some of the cars have doe over a million kms. One a 1.9d berlingo. I keep all my cars in the best condition, I service them every year myself so no service history as such. I am going to run it until it dies probably of rust first. Problem for me is my car worth £1500 and newer car £18k ihave missed the boat.

It really boils down to common sense. If you want to sell something, whether privately or to a dealer, whatever it is you need to present it as well as reasonably possible to get the most money. If the interior that you interface with is disgusting with no pride shown, then it's a fair assumption that the rest of the car hasn't been looked after. I totally agree with the modifications, I assume rightly or wrongly the car will have had a hard life. Also, mods are personal taste or lack there of in some cases.
@dougle03
@dougle03 2 ай бұрын
I disagree on clean car element. If buying a new or nearly new car from a main dealer, the price offered of the trade in is 100% what the book says and not even remotely related to how clean the car is. I traded by 2015 CLA45 AMG for an Audi S4 at an Audi dealer. We agreed the deal on the phone without the dealer even seeing the Merc. Sure they needed to check it over and confirm mileage etc, but it made no difference that it hadn't been washed or hoovered... Perhaps at the cheaper end of the market it would matter, but generally not since they will be valletted before going on sale anyway...

FSH on a car that looks like a bio-hazard - one cancels out the other. Unless the owner has only owned the car for a short while it gives the impression they just don't care. If they have owned it years and had it serviced regularly and put decent tyres on it then it could be they value mechanicals more than the filth they rode in. Years ago a friend had an old Fiesta which had a single number reg plate ( eg A 1 ABC) she got an offer of £2k for it. She said in reply "I don't want to sell my car" the answer was "oh we don't want the car just the reg plate"
