I love the fact that Ted Levine never met Hopkins and all his scenes were shot over just a few days. Buffalo Bill was a scary villain, and Levine did a wonderful job of making him both interesting and terrifying.

I think the creepiest scene in the movie is of Buffalo Bill dancing in the mirror!! It's creepy to me, because it's something that we all (or at least me) have done! Imagine a seriel killer doing something as normal as dancing...all while he has a victim prisoned in his basement!!

I think that scene with Clarice in total darkness, and Buffalo Bill in there with her, wearing his Night Vision Googles had to be one of the most tense scenes ever filmed..I had so many knots in my gut after that scene , that I couldn't eat for several hours after the end of the movie. That movie kept you in suspense for almost an hour and a half straight. Well paced, and fantastically edited, the movie was able to keep the audience at the edge of their seats for so long , it became an endurance test for tension building, right to the bitter end.

Everyone knows quote "“I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.” But most of us didn't realise that hannibal make a medical joke there. Lecter could be treated with drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors - MAOIs. As a psychiatrist, Lecter knows this. The three things you can’t eat with MAOIs? Liver, beans, wine. Lecter is a) cracking a joke for his own amusement, and saying he’s not taking his meds.

Surprised they missed the biggest little known fact about this film. The scene where Hannibal escapes and kills the guards. One cop is suspended above the bars and drapery is seen behind him. The script actually called for Hannibal to cut slits in his back, then pull out his lungs, draping them on the bars as to appear that he is an angel. Sick huh?

They also made Hannibal’s main holding cell out of clear plexiglass with holes so that they could fill him without having to work around the bars. It also made him more intimidating to watch since at times it feels like there is nothing to physically separate him from you. And the face eating scene the two actors bit down on a fake tongue to make the facial tug of war look more convincing

After reading the books, I can say that Hopkins did a phenomenal job playing Dr. Lecter. He is the only Hannibal Lecter in my eyes.

According to the "Making of" feature, they didn't want to cast a shadow. The light was directed straight at the actress, so that the shadow is hidden directly behind her. On the other hand cinematographer's job is to make an idiot out of a viewer, so I wouldn't believe the "Making of" video itself, and neither I'd believe this very KZfaq video I am commenting on here. It's just entertainment. If I want truth, I'd buy nightvision goggles myself, or simply try out my camcorder nightvision feature.

Yehudi Menuhin If I want truth, I go to theater. If I want fake, I go to movie theater. You know, kind of like classical or jazz performance, versus EDM or DJ. The DJ or EDM prerecorded playback "performance" being a movie, and the classical or jazz performance being a real music. In other words, fake vs. true.

Such an iconic movie. Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster were absolutely brilliant. My favorite thriller/horror of all time. Ted Levine was also fantastic.

Another thing not widely known: "Silence of the Lambs" is technically a sequel to "Manhunter" (1986) which starred William Petersen and Brian Cox as Dr. Lecter (Lecktor in Manhunter) But the filmmakers sought to make "Silence of the Lambs" as much as a stand alone film than a true sequel, however, the book "Red Dragon" on which "Manhunter" was based was later made into a connected prequel in 2002 with Anthony Hopkins reprising the roll of Lecter for the 3rd time after appearing in the sequel to Silence of the Lambs, "Hannibal" in 2001. I offer this tidbit to help make up for the fact the night vision goggles do in fact create visible shadows.

We tend to forget Ted Levine’s performance as Buffalo Bill. With his deep voice and physical looks he deserved recognition. Remember him as the captain on tvs Monk.

@Clo J That's what makes Mads better. He doesn't want you to see that he is a tarantula. He's a far more accurate portrayal of a psychopathic serial killer. Not only that, Mads is also a more accurate version of Hannibal Lecter from the books than Hopkins. Read the books and you will see. Hannibal Lecter doesn't act over the top like Hopkins does in the books.

Yup. "Starlight scopes" can use, well, starlight, as an illumination source. This is handy on the battlefield, because if your goggles have an enormous IR floodlight attached, anyone wearing a similar pair will be able to see it. But they wouldn't work in a cellar where there's just about no light at all. So Jaime would need to be wearing an IR illuminator. Whether that's visible in the film I can't remember, I'm not well familiar with the design of them. In that case, it depends where the illuminator is, relative to the gun. IRL it was presumably shot with an ordinary camera in ordinary white light, and tinted green / had the levels messed with afterwards. The light would usually be above and behind Jaime's shoulder. And I'm not going to buy T-shirts off some chancer who thinks by just stealing tiny pieces of a copyrighted film, he can get away with making money selling them. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for copyright theft, but you're a dick if you charge someone for it. There's dozens of companies doing these, reproducing logos from cult films, or inventing their own for companies in films. Pathetic imagination-free shysters. Great film though!

Not true night vision works from star light (ling) if its out side the night vision works well if its pitch black night vision wont work.

His gun can cast a shadow in total darkness....because total darkness is very bright. There's all sorts of invisible light moving through space at any given time, the source just has to be at the right frequency and angle to cast a shadow that night vision goggles (which use infrared) will pick up.

number 7 is completely wrong it was pitch black in the basement so the nvg's wouldn't work without the ir beam coming from the goggles...so it would cast a shadow

If it's pitch black, at least with the night vision that I've used, you need an IR illuminator. With the NV that I currently own, it has a built in illuminator that puts off a bit of visible red light. It's not mil-spec stuff - maybe they have better filters on the illuminators or work off of lower bandwidths. In any case, if you don't have light you can't see. You can see better in low light with night vision but you still need light. If you don't use an illuminator and you're in, for example, a cave and you have night vision, you still won't be able to see. Outside hunting with a quarter moon - you can see just fine.

Night vision allows you to use infrared light for the goggles to pick up. This means you can cast shadows with an infrared light, a light that you normally can't see very easily. This is certainly not a mistake.

If you loved that one, note: almost all these facts are extracted from a brilliant commentary track from a DVD. Super intense, interesting and detailed track, I must say. The whole major cast, writer and director are there. Highly recommended.

About the night-vision goggles: Many of them have an infra-red light which is invisible to the naked eye, but gives the goggles something to work on in total darkness. On NVG's with an IR illuminator, you could see a shadow like that.

Number 7's not a mistake. I just finished reading the book last week, and Buffalo Bill was holding an infrared light, which Clarice couldn't see, but he could with his goggles. The shadow was from the infrared light.

It does not matter. Even if Buffalo Bill were using S.I.T (Silicone Intensified Target) camera which can be used in near total darkness the small amount of light, below human threshold, still casts a shadow. I have used plenty of these types of cameras in the R.O.V Industry and repaired and adjusted these cameras plenty of times. The glow from a watch dial is enough light to illuminate an entire room. These cameras are extremely sensitive and that is what is used in military grade night vision as the military does not want even Infrared Radiation being used to to illuminate. That kind of advertises someone is using night vision. I.R detectors are cheap.

No he blinked just a couple times though and the reason for not blinking is because he studied serial killers and he noticed a lot of them rarely blink so he put that trait into the character so yeah

Not Blinking makes others uncomfortable, I'm a master at it myself, and only blink ever so often, back when I was in school I used it to disturb my schoolmates. It's a very easy skill to learn. It will irritate your eyes if you're not used to it. And if you smile just ever so slightly while doing it, will make others really really uncomfortable. Highly recommend learning it, just stare at the point on your face that joins the nose and the forehead, that will automatically keep your eyes open, and is a good way to train keeping them open as you literally can not blink while you do it. However the actual trick is to get used to it and then just stare at other people...

#7 is fine, night vision amplifies light up to 40,000 times. If there's no light at all they don't work. So most NVG's have a small IR light built in to create it's own light. So the shadows are realistic.

Some night vision goggles can see a shadow like that. Some types use Infrared LED's to enhance close quarters "light" as the night vision goggles can see infrared light.

It was filmed in the Pittsburgh, Pa., area. A few local actors appeared in this and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. The FBI agent during the forensic pathology scene and the creepy leery inmate who Clarice first sees were both actors who shared the small screen with Fred Rogers on his show.

Minor point if contention. Many/most night vision devices use infrared emitters to brighten up the surroundings which is invisible to the eye (or emit a slight red glow). They do indeed cast shadows just like any other sort of light.

When Clarice is hunting down Buffalo Bill in the dark, the music in the background (not soundtrack, but playing in the house) is Hip Priest by the Fall (British band from Manchester). It seems unlikely that he'd be a Fall fan, but it suits the tense amosphere with the soft kick drum and taps on the cymbals.

Watched this for the first time last night and was blown away. Definitely a movie that lives up to its reputation.

Night vision goggles project infrared light. You can't see it with the naked eye, but the goggles can pick it up. They do this so that things nearby will be brighter, appearing lit up while looking through the goggles. So, the shadow is probably due to this. I wouldn't be surprised if the camera was fitted with a NVG attachment. If you look at Clarice's eyes, her pupils are dilated as if she is actually in the dark.

How the maker of the video would suppose one person can see without any source of light? That's nonsense for me. The scene, of course, is full of shadows... I can't figure out how one person would see regardless any play of shadow and light.

If you look directly at an IR light, its red. She would had seen it. It was just light amplification, not IR goggles.

+Herman Munster Human eyesight does not include the infra-red spectrum, which is why it is used for IR devices. If you have a remote control that has to be pointed at the device you are controlling then it is using IR, which means you will not see a beam emitted because humans cannot see that wavelength of light. Many NVG/NOD sets use light amplification (aka starlight) to function in low light conditions. When there is not enough ambient light to function well then IR lights are used which work in conjunction with the light amplification. If you are somehow able to see the red light emitted by an IR emitter/light then you have an X-Men level mutation and should be working as a clandestine operative for a three letter government agency.

Thoddius I don't know the difference but my security cameras use IR at night and if you look directly into the camera, you can see the red lights. They aren't very bright but bright enough to easy notice them the closer you get. No idea if that is the same as night vision goggles or not however. I figured it was since their range is very similar.

Jodie Foster is timeless. Her hairstyle and clothing always seems to be right in line with whatever time it was or is today. Lamb’s was going to use Michelle Pfeiffer instead with her totally horrible 80s big hairdo which would’ve ruined the classic styling of this movie. Look at other Jodie Foster movies and it will be obvious. Short, smart, straight hair & classic clothing works 100% of the time ladies!

The movie was actually extensively underwhelming the first time I saw it, even after 20 years of hype.. And no, it's not because I am a mindless millenial who thinks that the Saw movies is true horror.. One movie that truly terrified me the first time I saw it, though, was "se7en", even though it's more a thriller than a horror, but it horrified the crap out of me

#7 For anyone who knows about night vision devices, knows that many have an IR projection setting. It's like a flashlight that can only be seen by certain types of night vision devices. And such a setting actually does cast shadows. The shadows are where the IR light DOESN'T hit. What the lens captures is the reflection of the IR bouncing back into the lens.

Actually night vision can generate shadows in the image. If the scene intended was 100% dark a passive NVG couldn't work, an active NVG uses an infra red emiter to light an area, and this "IR ilumination" CAN cast shadows like any other combination of light and sensor to pick up the light, even with softer shadows as you increase the distance of the light source. So, the shadow isn't a fail.

Fact #1; Orion, the production company that funded the movie, wanted Jodie Foster... Demme originally didn't want her, but they came to an agreement because Demme wanted Anthony Hopkins, but Orion wanted someone well known to play Hannibal...

One of my favorite cameos was left out!! In the scene taking place at the mortuary, one of the film’s producers Kenny Utt (who won best picture at the oscars for this movie) makes a quick appearance when the victim’s body is first uncovered. He’s wearing a suit. Kind of like the cameos in Marvel whenever they throw in Stan Lee!

+Cinefix actually, night vision sets can come with small infra red lights so that you can see in total darkness. With that light on, the wearer would be able to see the shadow you labeled as a mistake.

Held him back? No way. He was Chef Fuckin Brockett! The only thing that held Don back was bad genetics; he had really bad legs & hips & needed a cane & crutches for most of his life. Note: Don was proped up against the prison bars in Silence Of The Lambs. He had a role in almost every major motion picture filmed in Pittsburgh, till he died in '95 or '96 of a heart attack - the onset of which was triggered by a heated argument Don had with his production partner regarding whether to launder or dry clean a batch of costumes.

NVGs can cast a shadow with IR light. The light is invisible to the naked eye but can be used as a "flashlight" for NVGs.

In regards to the night vision: There will NOT be that heavy of a shadow in near darkness (they only amplify light, so in total darkness you still wouldn't see anything). However, if it has an infrared light on it (which a lot do) it will cast a shadow just like the one seen but, being IR, it can only be seen by the goggles. So, is it a mistake? There's not enough information here, but it's a pretty picky mistake if you count it.
