90% DONE! RANS S21 Update & Airworthiness Directive

Update on the S-21 Outbound build from Bend, Oregon. Most importantly I give some details about the new Airworthiness Directive regarding the wing fuel tank shifting.
The Interior is nearly done, the factory new Titan IO-340 engine shows up soon and I tell you the color! My new hangar/studio is nearing completion. Lots of fun updates including a sneak peek into my upcoming Alvord Desert and Fields Station adventure with my fighter pilot bros.

Little touches like that battery door, will pay huge dividends down the road. It's amazing how closing up areas with interior panels, instantly adds a 'things are getting completed' feel. The awesome news about that engine must be a huge load off. Looking good, Steve.

The best single mod (of dozens) that I made to my S20 was aftermarket seats from Rocky Mountain Kitplanes in Utah. The stock seats are light (about their only good feature) but not comfortable after about an hour. Now have 300hrs on my ship (about 100 on the new seats) including many 3+ hr legs. The comfort difference is unbelievable….and they look great too.

However, I heard those particular seats, increase seat height, which might not be good for taller people.

They are a bit thicker for sure (maybe 1”) but headroom is not a problem in the S20. I suspect same goes for S21 as cabin structure is the same. I am 5’10 and have 5” from top of my head to skylight. The seat tracks slope steeply down as the seat moves aft so head room grows as seat moves back. The only possible knock on the RMK seats is that they are a couple of pounds heavier and they are expensive.

@@martinjmerritt i’ve got a 21 and had my own seats modded. They might be half an inch to an inch thicker. I’m 6’3 and I can’t the wig out the left without ducking or the seat back which lowers it. the overall seating, in the 20/21 is humbug imho.

I'm starting my hangar build this upcoming spring. Hopefully it goes smoothly so I can start ordering airplane stuff! I'm really excited to watch your build and have a rudder workshop in March. Im 6'4" and sat in an s20 and it felt great. Good luck!

@CLEAREDDIRECT Watching your build with great interest! The S21 is a plane I'd love to own and fly, but no hangar space close to where I live in WA, long waiting lists. No fun to build under a shade hangar. Flying a Zenith CH750 STOL now and having lots of fun landing gravel bars, mountain strips and such. Having the faster cruise when wanting to go farther is something very desirable, but living with 28 to 95mph and amazing visibility for now. Jughead, if you know him, has a nice hangar not too far from me.

Yep, Jughead and I are buds. Im building my S21 in my small 2-car garage easily. That’s great you have a Zenith to fly. I agree about the good news about the top end. Lots of great flying in the PNW, but also big swaths of land/air to fly through. Thanks for watching, Clif! Happy landings, Steve

Actually, the A.D. was better to install after tank work done. I installed the kit in about 30 minutes with the wings on the plane. Very easy A.D. to complete/comply with.😉

Hi Steve. Did you order your engine when you ordered your kit? I got my kit about 3 months after you and haven't heard anything yet.. I understand that the backlog got to 20 months, but is coming down as Continental is finally pushing out engines.

I ordered my engine after I ordered my kit, before I received my kit. It's been 22 months. I should receive it within a month. Good luck!
