The cat analogy is spot on. When I’m changing baits or line or whatever on a rod, my cat is dialed in on my rod tip (I live in a small home I keep my fishing gear in the house). Any sudden movement, say letting the bait drop to test the spool tension, and my little guy is on it. Started noticing fish act the same way even small baitfish will react to baits the same way cats act. Edit: my cat has never actually got the bait I’m more attentive than that.

Yeah Ive noticed that with my cat too. Its gotten to the point where I have a second pole for him (It has a cat toy on the end thats attached by a swivel) so that way he can bat it around and wont grab my pole (which usually has a hook on it)

Your comment about cats was interesting. I have two Siamese cats and I started playing with them with a practice plug. I immediately noticed that the same techniques I use for Texas rig fishing triggers reactions from the cats. I began experimenting with different plug movements and learned a few things about predator instincts that have helped my bass fishing.

I have a little fishing combo for throwing my cats' toys around the house. It's funny cause they react almost like a bass just like you said. One of them likes to take off with it so ill loosen the drag and let him take off. Ill spend 30 mins playing with my cats sometimes when im bored and can't get out to the water.😂

Great video, and tips Matt! Diffrent retrives on all baits is smart. Like you said don't just let it sink and drag. I've been bass fishing for 40 years. Almost 100 percent of all big tornament's are won like this. A few anglers do something diffrent with there baits, instead doing the norm.

🍺Very nice tips Matt. I fish Texas rigged plastics as much as anyone on the planet. 😊It’s my confidence bait for the last 35 years🤠. For me 85% of the bites come on the initial fall from the very well placed cast. The aggressive/feeding bass that are too far away from the original cast to get it on the fall will come over and check it out closely. Especially in clear water. The very first thing after it hits the bottom and you give it a second or two and the curious bass is looking at it is to give a quick handle turn. That quick dart will get you 5%. Then after a second or two give it a couple of quick pops of the wrist. That will get you 5%. Then for me it’s reel it in and cast again time. During that fast reel in is when you get your last 5% of your bites but more times then not that will be a different species. I can fish a soft plastic on top, mid depth, and of course the bottom. I just returned from a 5 day fishing trip and went thru 11 bags of Senkos. Docks, grass, beds, flats, it doesn’t matter it’s how I have learned to make bass bite and I can happily fish that way all day long.🍺.

The best thing that ever happened for us old line watchers is bright yellow braid. ( Always laugh a little when i hear guys argue which rod is more sensitive) at least 50%of my fish caught i never felt. The line would stop falling before it should . Always count a lure down.

I absolutely love Texas rigging a Twin Tail Hula Grub and not pegging the weight. Works so well in so many scenarios. Plus a non pegged 10” worm deep is awesome too. Great tips as usual 👍👍👍

I'm usually pegging my weight but sometimes I give the weight a few inches to slide back and forth and I leave the eye of my hook exposed so the weight can knock on it and create noise for more drawing power. Some people may not like their weight banging on their knot but it's no big deal with smaller weights. Just keep an eye on it.

This year Matt is the first year that I’ve tried finesse fission. I’ve set an a lot on a lot of your videos and I’ve been working a lot lately and fishing! But listening to you, Brian Latimer, Jacob, Wheeler, and Randy. I step my game up big time I’ve never caught fish on top water frogs, I slowed my role, I got the zoom horny toad about eight or 93 pounders plus. And also I started Texas Rigging!!!!!😢 and I’m not gonna lie. I’ve been fission mats weed lines, and as you would say the horseshoe structure from underneath from point to point, I just been picking smallmouth off the ledge and I’ve been picking larges out of the shadow and I’ve been doing exactly what you’re saying a little pop here and there even with the Ned rig just a little pop, pop, and a little bit of sweet motion, depending on the type of bait that I got I can do a 7 o’clock to 1 o’clock pull up let it fall on its own with that action alone. I usually get my strike or soon as I move it again after I get my line in shape !!! I thank you for everything I guarantee if I was on a boat with you for one day he would say man this guy is awesome and I would gladly say the same thing back to you and I would also shake your hand and say thank you for the best experience because when people don’t understand if you never even fished a bass tournament, the pressure the marking out the structure it’s not easy it’s not give you a fishfinder and tell you. Oh, I’m a pro lol I know somethings make it easier, but I appreciate all the techniques and all the extra incentives you throw in there brother, I’m on Fishbrain and I’m a send you my name on your Instagram and you can see what I’ve been catching. Thanks for another great video! Yesterday mikeybalzz posted a t-rig hack where you put a bobber stop on both ends of the weight so you can slide the weight up the line to create a quick Carolina rig. So simple but I would never have thought to do this.

I almost never peg the weight either....I think it gives it versitility like you said, and I also think that when the fish sucks it in, and starts swimming off, they don't feel the tension so they keep it. I feel like sometimes when they are finicky, if they feel tension on the line or the weight of the sinker, or something that's not right, they will spit it right back out. This is great info Matt! keep it up!

I never peg a weight on my Texas rigs but I often fish plastics on a jig rigged weedless.

The only time I peg my Texas rig Baits is when I flip into heavy cover and I want to get that bait through the grass and make sure that the weight stays in contact with the bait only if the grass is thick, most of the time I like to keep my weight unpegged from the bait as well because I think sometimes when you are stroking a Texas rig a fish may see that bait weight separation and it may look like some kind of forage chasing another, now that may not be 100% accurate.. but it gives me confidence and I think no matter what you're throwing as long as you have confidence in it you're always going to catch fish with it! I've been told that since I was a kid by my grandfather that whatever I'm fishing if I have confidence in it I will catch fish with it.. and I think you have to have confidence in any bait that you use trying to catch fish.. because if you have confidence for some reason or another the bites will come. But I like leaving my weight unpegged from the bait because I think that it gives it that weight bait separation that looks like something chasing something else to a fish.. and like I said I don't know how accurate that assumption is but it sounds good to me and it gives me confidence. Confidence gives you concentration and energy. It’s not mind over matter (unless you mean mind over your own body). I suspect the same thing about unpegged weights. That’s why I paint all my weights the color of forage. Letting the lure glide freely to the bottom and reducing the pull of the weight when a fish bites helps, too.

Another great informative video Matt. The lakes I fish have zero vegetation other than a little standing timber that hasnt rotted away yet. There is no grass, weeds or mats so I almost never peg sinkers. Only when I vacation in florida do I ever peg sinkers. Are there any good reasons to peg a sinker on lakes without vegetation?

i wouldnt unless i was flipping bushes or super thick wood and the peg and bait separation was getting me caught in the bushes.

Give me a rod and reel, a pack of offset hooks, some bullet weights, and a couple bags of plastics and I can literally catch anything, anywhere. I just proved you can even fish a Texas rigged stick bait in saltwater and catch fish.

I can catch bass at my small little local pond on big 8inch+ swimbaits but for some reason in all the years of fishing at this spot I can rarely get one to bite a Texas rig creature bait.

Another nice video, Matt, as always. I wanted to point something out, though. I've watched lots of videos where the person mentions not pegging the weight, then goes on the say that the weight falls first, with the bait, falling, slower, behind it. I've studied several underwater videos, online. In all of them, the furthest I ever saw the bait trail the weight, was maybe 6 inches, at best. Most were only 3 or 4. Are we putting too much faith into the notion that these baits are somehow slowly falling, seconds behind the weight? I mean, typically, they hit the bottom, maybe a second or so behind the weight. Might be a good topic to explore in one of your upcoming videos. Thanks, and keep em coming!

interesting. i know for a fact i get several feet of distance between the bait and weight using my various retrieves. If you drag it sure you wont get much separation but put a 1/4 oz weight on and give it a good sweep and youll see the distance. But like ive mentioned before stick with what you have confidence in. thats most important.

bass are indeed like cats, i use to tie a soft plastic, with a broken hook (no it didn't have a sharp end it was literately broken clean off because i had to cut it off with some wire cutters in order to get it off my back pack.) and throw it cross the living room, my cat would stare at it and think about pouncing it, and then the moment i would pop it, he would literately attack it. i started to use that same mentality with bass after seeing it, and noticed i would get alot more strikes, so if you're ever bored and you wanna practice, use your cat. i use to also practice dragging it across the floor and just observe how he would react and stuff like that. It was funny and cute but it did teach me alot to be honest.

I like to double peg my weight one on top and bottom that way I can set my weight wherever I need it to be. Slide the top stopper higher and you get a free weight. Try it it gives you more versatile ways to fish it. Like all your knowledge.

you made me bust out laughing when you told that story about the cat I noticed the same one thing pne day I had a piece of rope and I was toying with the cat with the piece of rope and I started noticing the cat was reacting the same way bass do so I played with a couple of different retrieves towards the cat some the cat were just look at and some of the cat couldn't stand it jumped on the rope I applied to the strategy to fishing it works. I watch this young man fish for a few hours as I walked up to him he said he hasn't caught a thing that day and I've used everything in my tackle box I showed him it is your retrieve .it only took 15 minutes. later he caught four Bass.
