www.myboxingcoach.com - In this 90 second boxing tips video I am going to give a quick and simple view of the ‘peek-a-boo’ boxing style.
This style of boxing was made famous by Iron Mike Tyson, the principles embedded in Mike by the great trainer Cus D’Amato who also guided such boxing luminaries as Floyd Patterson and Emile Griffith.
D’Amato encouraged his fighters to use this ultimately defensive style, and whilst it was really about managing the risk of taking incoming shots it was also geared toward turning defense into attack. It is about evasiveness and speed of assault.
The peek-a-boo style is especially effective for shorter fighters to use against taller guys, nullifying reach by using deft slips, ducks and rolls.
Boxing Tips #1
Keep the hands high at all times, especially at long range. It’s almost like the double arm block. This was a non-negotiable for D’Amato - the hands remain in the guard position…always!
Boxing Tips #2
Use slips and ducks proactively to make you evasive. Fire the jab off the slips to crack open the defense of the opponent and lay the ground for the follow up combination.
Tyson used to slip a lot from the waist with some drive from the legs. I coach slips to be driven from the legs, I just feel that you get a more responsive outcome in terms of balance and punch effectiveness.
Boxing Tips #3
Be careful about going ‘square on’ at long range, if you take an incoming shot your balance can go.
Nice and simple, the peek a boo style.
Any comments or questions below please.
Cheers
Fran

@@Aki-xj6ll If you do peek a boo correctly you would never have to worry about that too much because that hook/uppercut would be an opening for a flurry of body shots. Watch Tyson videos and see how it worked out for people who tried to upper cut Tyson while he was slipping.

I love this, Reminds me of tying ropes across our MMA/Self defense studio, below shoulder height, and doing the "Tyson March", forward and backward with two or three punches every time we bobbed and slipped and weaved, under the rope, come up and punch, 1-2, weave under to the other side, 1-2-3, etc., for about twenty minutes. It was a great drill, and you learned to use your knees and legs/hips in the peek-a-boo style, plus diagonal steps with counters, etc. Also very tiring : )

Peekaboo breakdown by a former Cus D’amato (peekaboo inventor) fighter. Its a style that is perfectly suited to shorter fighters with less reach than their opponent due to the emphasis on slipping, bobbing and weaving. Its a unique style that not many traditional boxing gyms understand how to properly teach kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKiXh5Og1rXcoYE.html

Square on works because of the head movement and the shifting foot work. Make the opponent miss continuously and then shift to either side while your opponent is still facing forward. This gives the fighter confidence that they are safe to unleash their full power while punching. Squaring up more also takes less distance for the right hand and a more stable base to explode from. Sometimes side on fighters don’t let the right hand go as well as they could because they are tentative because of countering. The head movement, guard, shifting footwork and powerful stance takes the fighters tentativeness away and allows him to hit with more explosiveness. It gives him confidence in his safety and explosiveness in his punching. I read about it in ‘Iron Ambition’ the lessons Mike Tyson learned from Cus D’Amato.

he's spot on about the explosive footwork, Patterson and particularly Tyson are very underrated technical fighters, I think an important part about the peekaboo style is that it's very physically demanding and without the power and explosive speed in your hands feet and head movement leaves you quite vulnerable a question I have is do you know any other fighters who have successfully pulled off the peekaboo style? thanks for the video Fran currently a amateur boxing coach in the north west and I'm always taking points from the vids

Thanks George, nice words from a fellow coach. Jose Torres was another Cus D'Amato fighter (not Emile Griffith as I mention in the video), but his style is not 'obviously' peek-a-boo if you know what I mean.

as someone with little knowledge of boxing but a good amount of knowledge in strength training & biomechanics. In all of Tyson's training & fighting videos it looks like Tyson had very strong legs & hips. Much more so than any other boxer I've seen. And his precise sharp movements, while twisting the body, shifting weight from feet to feet and travelling forwards - generated a sort of cumulative momentum to be exploited. Both as a means of recycling energy and to put it into a shot at the end.

Fascinating style . I think its a modification of "Turtle shell" defense (something ala Joshua Clotley) with attacks being from the left and right side (hooks, body shots and uppercuts). The numbering system is easy: odd numbers for left hand, even numbers for the right hand..and the order is : 1-2 hooks to jaw, 3-4 uppercuts, 5-6 body shots, 7-8 jabs, 9-10 overhands (homerun hooks)

Another benefit of the peek a boo, which is absolutely devastating for fighters who are ambidextrous, is the symmetrical nature of the guard. Unlike righties and lefties, who will set up in their off stance to give their power hand the lead. A fighter who is truly ambidextrous, like tyson, are completely comfortable shifting in and out of orthodox to southpaw and those who have excellent footwork (again like tyson) can shuffle between the stances per punch. If you watch fight footage of his fights, especially his early fights before he fired Kevin Rooney, you will see him shuffle in and out of orthodox and southpaw in mid combo. He may start orthodox but end the combo in southpaw. This type of talent is born and cannot be taught. The point though is unlike other styles and guards. Were the lead and power hands are clearly defined. Both hands are relatively mirrored in the same spot. So as you shuffle out of orthodox it enables you about a split second delay before your opponent realizes you have switched stands. This have second illusion is truly, in my opinion, what made tyson so devastating because he was so fast that that split second put him into a firing position that couldn't be stopped by his unaware opponents. This positioning made his knockouts so spectacular and sent people flying across the ring because of the angles he could switch too.

You have to be really fast and strong to be effective, is very effective is the boxer had short stature. You keep your guard in the face and body using all the arm, the opponent try to punch you in the face, and you hit the body, the opponent covers the body, and you hit him with a cross in the face.
