Boxing Footwork Drill - Retreat to Attack

I use lots of boxing footwork drills with my boxers. To me, boxing footwork drills are essential when building a solid and reliable boxing style.
The boxing footwork drill I have for you in this video brings to you the tactical concept of ‘retreat to attack’. This means giving up ground in order to launch an attack.
I use the taped lines on the floor to take you through 3 different boxing footwork drills:
1. Straight line retreat to long range
2. Stance switch left and right
3. Angled side step on the retreat
There is a key point to understand about how you apply these boxing footwork drills. I have set them out as 3 distinct tactical situations, so you have the benefit of understanding and applying those tactics.
However, the additional win is that if you work these footwork drills repeatedly and with discipline, then you will quickly see an overall improvement in your foot control and balance. Being able to repeatedly shift your feet with precision and consistency represents a huge step up in capability.
Here are 4 other ways that I can help you right now:
If you are thinking about beginner boxing, check out the 10 Beginner Boxer Skills playlist: • Beginner Boxer Skills ...
To access a wealth of bite sized boxing tips, jump to the 90 Second Boxing Tips playlist: • 90 Second Boxing Tips

You got it wrong. This is applicable only to stupid and inperfect boxer. If the opponent knows that you are retreating you eill get horrible surprise and lose the game. If it is stupid like Manny Paqua you stand chance like May Whether. But perfect boxers are not stupid like Paqua.

Funny enough I've trained in the Cuban style of boxing and arnis, the footwork is uncannily similar in both systems. I definitely believe their most be some commonalities that are based on the original Spanish system of destreza. Either way, I find FMA beautiful.

Great drills mate! I really like the transition from the orthodox stance to southpaw. I've been doing BJJ for 8 years now but boxing has become one of my favorite hobbies outside of training on the mat. I can easily grapple and roll for six 7 minute rounds during class but when it comes to sparring in the ring I start getting winded by the second round and start getting my ass handed to me but I absolutely love it! Thank you for taking the time to produce this video and share this knowledge. Best regards from Houston, Texas.

The Tyson move is known as the D'Amato Shift :D :D I'm sure it's been around before D'Amato, but it was used extensively by D'Amato in training his fighters. He actually used a lot of "unorthodox" and sometimes even "outdated" methods that actually worked really well with his fighters.

I dig all of your vids! Especially, I dig this topic. One of my favorite deceptive move is to draw a pressure fighter forward by feigning a withdrawal. In the pocket, my front foot takes a full step back reversing my stance. (Yes, this is a straight line retreat but I do this rarely.) Then launch a straight jab with a bounce off my back foot...(then any apt combos or side steps.)

Fran I'm a new trainer helping out, thanks for the videos. I had 6 fights 4-2 and boxed for 13yrs on and off with injuries. You're videos are very helpful to catch up on the basics. I'm basically teaching footwork, the jab and cross since that's what I was known for, but didn't realize how much work it is teaching children and adults basic footwork. Yet 5 days a week I'm busting my ass off getting better, I plan on watching every video. Thank you, God bless.

Well done for giving back, it's a great credit to you. Time will help. It took me 2 years to stop being a boxer and become a coach, and I continue to learn until this day and hope to keep learning until they lower me into the ground! The key is to keep working with boxers (young and old), improving them, helping them and inspiring them. Keep it going buddy ;-)

I am a grandmaster of Kali and Silat and I love this guy! With weapons you learn all about moving around and working angles. I did contact fighting for 2 years in JKD before I started Kali and Silat. That's what got me in with the teacher. It is a family art and I was made extended family. I have brothers and uncles. I just call myself a black belt if anyone asks. Peace. Hippy Mike.

I've been looking for examples of the Kali false lead in boxing, where you step forward on the triangle, outflanking and creating a new line, then pivot step through and rush it. Haven't really found any. Closest I've seen is Lomachenko and McGregor in his bout with Mayweather. Loma's a natural orthodox who fights southpaw and his favorite tactic is stepping his lead right foot outside his orthodox opponents lead left, out flanking them and simultaneously turning his stance orthodox. McGregor was getting completely behind Mayweather in same fashion, even more Kali style, seemingly at will, but really didn't do anything with it. Marvin Hagler also did something close as he could switch stances fluidly, gaining hidden angles.

The only part I like about MMA is BJJ. Everything else looks like brutes trapped in kicking and punching range by the rules. I have been into BJJ for 10 years. I study Tai Chi and Bagua.

@Victor Mace Yes they did. Another example I didn't mention, but in MMA, is Dominic Cruz. He used false lead style footwork. He would actually step toward the power hand while checking it, then turn in.
