This episode covers the build-up of the short block and the assembly of the two halves of the engine case. I show how to seal the case, prep the bearings with assembly lube, install the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft that drives the oil pump and cams, and assemble both halves while keeping the con rods in the right position. I also cover testing the function of the thermostat and how to prevent the crank shaft from turning while you tighten the flywheel bolts.
Here are links to the resources I mention in the video:

Excellent video. I am too a fan of Klassic Automotive Training School. Since I have a 993 with over 231,000 miles on the clock, I’m very interested in the results of your build. So far I think you’re on point. Keep up the good work. Ken

I was just recently wondering when the next video was going to come out! Still itching for you to rebuild the 964 engine. I'd use your videos as a reference point once it comes to the time to rebuild my 993 3.6

I just posted one! Sorry for the long delay. My 964 engine has 165k miles but is still running strong, so I hope I don't have to rebuild it anytime soon!

Like your videos. Kurt Donahue is the best at Klassik automotive training school. Also watch out for the Wurth aluminum washers that come in the pelican rebuild kit. They deform even before they reach their the proper torque setting. The original factory ones are better.

Thank you for the advice and thanks for watching! I didn't have an issue with the normal aluminum Wurth washers. There were a few of the aluminum washers for the oil fittings (I can't remember if they were for the cam housing banjo bolts or the pressure sensor) that were not able to take the full torque spec. The torque spec actually seemed way too high for such a thin washer. Thanks for the tip!

What was the reason for not putting the Loctite 574 on the other half of the case? Looks like it would have been easier?
@themitchanic

That's a very good question. I followed Dempsy's book, where they put it on the same half I did. I think it is also easier to paint on with the block half attached to the engine stand - it provides a secure, stable platform at a good working height. I think if you wanted to paint it on the other half it wouldn't matter.

I'm doing the same build. 3.0 with JE pistons and new Nikies from EBS. I'm runnig the 964 cam grind and the 40mm PMOs with SSI's. Should be very similar your yours. I'm curious about the 1mm gap from the piston top to the cylinder top. Don at EBS said anything over 1mm will work for clearance.

I got my piston clearance numbers out of Dempsey's book. In the next video I will show how I checked this clearance. I remember it wasn't an apples-to-apples measurement as Dempsey's, as the CP pistons I used are a different shape than the stock pistons. I am very happy with my setup. I run a 9.8:1 compression ratio, which was the highest I could safely go without running twin plugs. This ratio was recommended by William Knight, who is a great knowledge source for these engines! I recommend reaching out to him. I also bought some of my parts, like carbs and exhaust from him. I am also running a different cam than you - I got the 464/465 grind from Webcam (www.webcamshafts.com/pages_vehicles/automobile/porsche_install_data/tc_000452_003771.html). My car made 260 hp on the dyno and has a super flat torque curve. It is fantastic on the track and very usable on the street. Good luck with your build!
