I've worked with public safety agencies (city, country, state and federal) for 15 years. Most people don't realize that most of these government professionals are dedicated, service-oriented people. It's amazing what they're willing to do and put up with for less money than the private sector. What's also amazing is how good these people are. These are talented people with tons of knowledge. Had the politicians listened to them during the pandemic, this country would have done a lot better job getting through the crisis.

Rightwing media have poisoned their reputation with lies, slurs and a constant stream of hateful negative agitprop for decades. Reagan started the now widely believed lie that " the government is the problem" It's stark in its simplicity, catchy and completely false.

This is unusual in most countries, and a big reason that the US has remained fairly free of corruption. Trump has vowed to get rid of this system. That would allow his second term to be even more corrupt than his first.

I blamed George on GMA for giving Donald Trump so much 'free' TV time back when he won. Now I know George had to give orange man daily time, his network must have been forcing him to do so. It is so scary to think DJT didn't care if his VP Pence was murdered. I will go to my grave never understanding anyone wanting such an awful man, a many times convicted felon, a serial cheater, and horrible businessman another turn at the White House...

I am now and was then fundamentally opposed to the political positions Mike Pence holds/held, but I was terrified for his safety as well as the safety of ALL other members of Congress (Democratic or Republican), and the adjacent staff and security personnel. THAT is what makes most of us left of center differ from most of those right of center.

@carolynblakeney966 I agree. I find it disturbing how former President Trump treats his supporters and victims as collateral damage. He could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose any votes. I feel for the poor hypothetical person just minding their own business walking down 5th Avenue not realizing that at any point some crazy wanna be President is about to shoot them. Mr. Trump put a target on the back of VP Pence and unleashed the rioters to seek out Mr. Pence for lynching. Trump supporters were hurt and killed during the Jan. 6 insurrection, but they were simply pieces on Mr. Trump's board of checkers (let's be honest...chess is much too complicated for him). Even after being told that someone had been shot at the Capitol, Mr. Trump refused to tell the rioters to stand down and go home. He relishes any violence that is committed in his name, and I find that attitude truly reprehensible.

I've always thought of George as fair, humble, a thoughtful thinker and knowledgeable. I dream that he becomes a forefront speaker during this time of media lies and lukewarm journalism. It's just sad to see that so many so called journalists chase down roads of less thoughtful sensationalism and low hanging fruit that's easy but rotten to the core

This was just fantastic, thank you!! I’m not too much younger than George and I remember him as the WH Comm. Dir. during President Clinton’s first term. He was a young policy wonk and our family just loved him… we lost THE policy (and economics) wonk in our family back in 2015 (my brother) and I feel so sad he’s not here to read George’s book… he’d have pored over it… ruminating over the various POTUS and duty officer and Sit. Room incident revelations… we’d get dad to read it and would’ve had many dinner time conversations about it. I can just see him with the book under his arm like he had so many other favorites… 😊

@@ldonnay Your comment prompted me to do a quick search on the articles and clips of hers at the time. And yes, it seems she was pretty hard on HRC. I wasn’t aware of any of this, actually. But now, that also sheds new light on the interview itself, particularly the simple question of what was going through both their minds at certain moments.

I'm one that knows that there are man in the silent service of our republic from a local level including legislative branch as well as emergency management. The words about the duty officer on January 6th are both haunting and encouraging we endured the challenge. Now, we have yet another challenge this fall...and the system can't take it if we fail to uphold the curbs.

When these stories are told they humanize the people involved, and their dedication and competence. Trump and Trumpers dehumanize everyone and therefore they outrage over a lie easily. Sweeping generalizations instead of depth of any kind, all forest no trees. This was so interesting and refreshing. Intelligent conversation around subjects that aren't all Trumpstinky.

Before I spend even a second listening to this, can someone please confirm whether or not George Stephanopoulos asked about Ms Haberman's role as a mouthpiece for Trump et al, as was revealed during the recent election interference trial? It's pretty much the ONLY thing Ms Haberman should be asked at this point in time, given it's relevance to platforming a candidate who was engaging in election interference in 2016 and was turning to her to get his messaging out.

I had a sense that the Pence situation was symbolic and did not believe that the crowd would actually kill him. Maybe I was wrong but many of these people who stormed the Capitol were successful mature businessmen and no matter how much hate existed at that storming I could not imagine they would have committed an actual hanging.

The secret service detail with Pence were alling loved one,saying their good byes. When secret service is worried they may die( whether protecting Pence or just from being over poweed),you know they took the hang Pence seriously.

I share George's sentiment about starting the day in agitation, anger perhaps or even sadness about the impotence that good honest citizens feel in having to tolerate the trump denigration, degradation and diminution of not just the office of the POTUS but SCOTUS, the integrity of long standing US institutions and the integrity and the expediting of the decline of the US at home and abroad ... not only tragic but compels all of us not maga-ites to reclaim the honor of being a US citizen
