A coincidence you are talking about this man today... I have have just got home from Salon QP watch exhibition in London... I was lucky enough to meet Kari Voutilainen, I enjoyed a conversation with him, he told me he makes only 40 watches a year with a small team of people he said if you ordered a watch today he should be able to deliver it for Christmas 2018. So, over a year wait... I got the opportunity to look closely at a couple of his watches and they are quite simply works of art. He was such a lovely friendly man, he gave me his business card and said that i should look him up if I was ever in Switzerland... I am just about to send him an email to say thank you for taking time out to speak to a mere mortal like me,

Hey Marc, what a great opportunity! It's like an art lover meeting Picasso. Fabulous guy! I had the same experience in New York a few weeks ago. Kindest regards, Bill

Hi Paul. I was very fortunate in finding an animation that shows how a Maltese cross works in maintaining a constant force mainspring. Kindest regards, Bill

Thank you professor for shedding light 💡 on independent watch makers in general 🙏🏻✨(FYI): the MB&F LM 2 I recently added to my collection is based on 1924 Breguet movement rebuilt and modified with a double regulator architecture system by Jean-François Mojon and Kari Voutilainen. The result is a watch that holds time (+\- 1 to 2) seconds PER YEAR.

Who do you think is better Kari Voutilainen or Roger Smith? Don't sit on the fence with your answer Bill, just tell it how you see it;)

Well Hero ... can't sit on the fence, huh? I like them both, but if someone offered me of choice, I'd probably go for the Roger Smith. Take care, bill

Hi Bill, thanks for the presentation. Do Voutilainen watches hold their value? Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
@watchartsci

Eugene, I'd buy Voutilainen because of its horology-the horological value stays high whether the price goes up or down. No disappoints. Take care, Bill

Hi Bill, I just watched this video again. Which one would you choose, Patek Philippe or Voutilainen? I need your advice. Thank you.
@watchartsci

Definitely Voutilainen. Ever since Patek started using silicon hairsprings, I've no interest in those after 2009. Take care, Bill

@@watchartsci Hi Bill, thank you for your reply. What is wrong with silicon hairsprings? What material should hairsprings be? I have a lot to learn from you because I am just a beginner. Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 2 жыл бұрын
@@eugenejohnson7755 There's nothing wrong with quartz watches (quartz = silicon & oxygen) either. They're very accurate. Patek, Swatch and Rolex all got together to create silicon hairsprings. Rolex is the only one that kept their parachrom hairsprings (niobium & chromium as the main metals in their compound) ... using traditional transitional metals. Silicon is a metalloid not used in transitional mechanical watches. (Arsenic is another metalloid). I didn't get into collecting timepieces with excellent craftsmanship to end up with silicon as a hairspring-cannot regulate it with a swan neck regulator or any other kind of regulator. However, like quartz, there are several advantages; non magnetic; better withstands heat and cold-all must use free spring balances (not a bad thing). So if you want to buy watches with silicon ... be my guest. Take care, Bill

Hi Bill, nice eye-opening as always. Thanks. Today i got a question and would appreciate your kind input. I got VC Les Historiques Karee 91001 days ago. Before i pulled the trigger, i did a research and learnt that VC and JLC years ago around 195x , they worked and developed some movements together. My knowledage is quited limited though. Then I found out the movement in my LH 91001 is very much like movements in JLC manual wind. It is the same movement with my eyes. Do you have any thing to elaborate about their collab in the past? Cheers.
@willieboon6150
@willieboon6150 6 жыл бұрын
It is Cal 843 for JLC to be exact.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
Willie, VC and JLC did a lot together. For years, JLC was a movement maker for high horology brands, and VC used them a good deal. (VC also used Girard-Perregaux and Frédéric Piguet for movements) A lot went on in the pre-quartz days and in the subsequent years after quartz as the top names were re-adjusting. If you have a VC, you need to go to thehourlounge.com -- they will be able to tell you better than anyone about your Les Historiques Karee 91001. Post a picture of your watch there too. Also, visit our FaceBook page, "The High Horology Forum." and post a picture of your watch! If your movement is VC 1017 then it is a JLC 483. Kindest regards, Bill

Breguet Over coil on the main spring?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryvr, of course I meant "hairspring" ... having the end of the hairspring bend up tricks it into thinking it will always have an equal pull over a broader range of mainspring tension than a flat spring [on the hairspring]. Thinking the mainspring appears to have equal charge because of the Breguet overcoil on the hairspring somehow ended up with Breguet overcoil on the mainspring. Kindest regards, Bill

Lange Used to be my grail watch. Now, it is VINGT-8. If I ever get that, I will be done. No more. Well, there is no boundery to dream anyway.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 4 жыл бұрын
Mine too! That VINGT-8 is a masterpiece that I cannot afford! So is the Grönefeld 1941 Remontoir ... and they only made 118 of them. (or 188 ...) I can't afford either; so it doesn't really matter much, I guess. You never know! Take care, Bill
