Very often, we see chess players developing their bishop in the opening stage by playing Bg5/Bg4, pinning the opponent's knight. However, it can become a costly mistake if played at the wrong time.
But here's the trick: how do you decide whether to play Bg5/Bg4, pinning your opponent's knight, or to develop the bishop to another square or fianchetto it? In other words, when is it okay to play the pin and when is it a strategic or tactical mistake?
That is exactly what GM Igor Smirnov explains in this video lesson. You will learn the two main rules to determine when it is NOT a good choice to pin your opponent's knight with your bishop, and two situations/positions when playing the Bg5/Bg4 pin is completely fine.

1. Don't do it if you haven't developed your knight, since the bishop is already semi-active 2. Don't do it if the opponent did not castle kingside. h3 g4 will kick you out without exposing their king. 3. Do it if they castled, because moving those pawns now exposes them. Don't be afraid to sac the knight and start an all out attack if they push the g pawn. 4. Do it to establish center dominance and build up pressure.

Lol so I get that this is a joke, but that whole opening is specifically based on breaking that rule, as opposed to accidentally ignoring it. Plus that doesn’t involve pinning the knight but rather centralizing the bishop

The solution to the puzzle: Sometimes when the queen goes deep into enemy territory, it can get trapped there and won. In this position white has a queen trap. 7. hxg4! Qxh1 Qxh1 is forced, otherwise black simply loses a piece 8. Ne2! The black queen has no way out. g1, h2, and h4 are controlled by the f3 knight. h3 and h5 are controlled by pawns. h6 is controlled by the bishop on c1. 8… Nxg4 This is black's only reasonable try, to remove the defender of the h5 square. 9. Ng3 +- This move not only attacks the queen on h1, but also re-controls h5, trapping the black queen and obtaining a decisive advantage. Edit: 8... Ne4 by black is met by 9. Qd3. After something like 9... f5 10. gxf5 Qh5 11. Qxe4, white is happy to have two minor pieces in exchange for a rook. Edit 2: On 8... Nh5 by black, the best move suggested by the engine is 9. Qd3, but from a human standpoint 9. gxh5 is good enough. On 8... g5, this is the engine line after which white ends up with a piece up: 8... g5 9. Bxg5 Ne4 10. Bf4 Bh6 11. Qd3 Bxf4 12. Qxe4 Qh6 13. Qxb7 O-O 14. Qxa8 Nc6 15. Qb7 Rb8 16. Qa6 +-

How can you start the game without the D7 pawn. In order for black to get its bishop out that pawn needs to move, and it’s only 2 moves render this line useless for white.

Thank you, Igor. I think we have to snare the black Queen on the h file with hxg4 Qxh1 - I don't like the Bishop pin, but he guards g2 Ne2 means that the best bargain for Black is Qxf1+ Kxf1 and we cannot castle, Nxg4 just to be spiteful :-)

6:03 after white pawn moves to h4, why can you not move black bishop to e4 instead? It cannot be taken in that position and has a safer way to fall back to us needed while also keeping it relatively active on the board? Sacrifice your knight by taking one of the pawns in front of your opponent's castled king (but not the pawn in front of their rook) can work well in the situation you describe. This leaves their king in a vulnerable position.

The move to make is hxg4, despite the pin. If black plays Qxh1, she is trapped. After Ne2, black's only way to hold on to the queen a little longer is Nh5, relegating his knight to the edge of the board solely to prevent Ng3, which would win the queen. Yes I have people do that to me a lot times they take my knight I like to take back with the pawn it seems crazy but I will develop to castle queen side while also having in theory a extra pawn to attack the middle. You gotta realize as well you also can move the queen to black square or up to D3 and you can now attack black queens by offering a queen trade which is also check on black black can move the bishop back to block but can’t save the queen if they move the king you take the queen. You really give black no choice but to take if they don’t take now you take queen also can threaten the pawn on B7 and the rook on A8. Also why allow someone who opens up queens pawn while you open up Kings pawn to take you have to push the kings pawn to e5 and queens pawn e3 you get in French defense now there knight can not attack nor the bishop. It also cuts off the whole king side of attack while given you openness to move around and develop to attack both sides of the board.

Anyway, my 10-year old great-granddaughter just told me that I can go to the Settings of this video and reduce the speed. I didn't know that. I just reduced the speed to .5 and it is now working like a charm. It's a miracle. You have a good life.

Speak more slowly. You speak too quickly and mumble your words. Slowing down and speaking clearly will make viewers more interested in what you are saying. When you speak rapidly it gives the impression that what you are saying is not important. I realize that English is not your native language, and you should learn that some languages are better spoken at different speeds than other languages.
