I was browsing the used camera market recently, as I often do, and I noticed that with a theoretical budget of just $100, there is actually quite a bit to choose from.
However, I didn't want to be the one to pick. I thought it would be more fun to post a poll and ask all of you what you thought would be the best use of $100, with the options being narrowed down to
1) Canon 30D with nifty-fifty
2) Sony RX100 (original)
3) Nikon D80 (Body only)
Each of these cameras has a lot going for it, and I know many people that would choose each one.
For the Nikon, you have that legendary CCD sensor and the ability to use a huge variety of legacy lenses.
For the Sony, you have a built in lens with a great and super convenient zoom lens (28-100mm equivalent) that is small enough to fit in your pocket.
With the Canon, you have a professional grade camera body that was known as the "baby 5d" along with a fast prime lens.
After one week, 75% of you chose the Canon. So, that is what I bought and that is the only camera I used.
Unlike the last video, I did not limit myself to JPEG only or just one lens. Instead, I limited myself to just 36 photos - just like a roll of film. Aside from often thinking in terms of film since I have shot so much of it, I loved the old documentary about the last roll of Kodachrome, being shot by Steve McCurry. He took that one roll, those 36 photos, and he made the most of it by going around the world for those 36 shots.
So, I took a note from Mr. McCurry and decided to take a little trip all around Taichung in order to get my 36 photos.

The canon 30 D is a formidable piece of equipment too. Good stuff.

What a great deal! Pairs up nicely with the 5D. Essentially, an APS-C version of the 5DC

That’s what I’ve always heard. I have to say, it looks and feels about 99% the same as a 5D, as well. I actually get them mixed up when they are sitting next to each other.

I have the 20d and it is an amazing camera, the photos look very like the 5d classic, I call my mini 5D, and since it is quite compact, i take it out the most

I had a Canon 30D a few years back to supplement by 5D. Gave it to my nephew's wife to have fun with, and now have a 7DMkII. The older Canons are remarkable cameras.

I had owned a Canon 50d, years ago, and actually didn’t like it very much. So, my assumption was that the 30D might be an even worse experience. To my surprise, I really enjoy using the 30D. It is shockingly similar to the 5D.

@@SkylerKingIt's the back dial. Makes all the difference. The 50d has a nice output though.

The overall shape of the 50d (along with the 40d, I believe) is different. A bit taller and more squared off in the corners. It also has a completely different button layout. The “menu” button is pushed up higher, next to the viewfinder. There is the addition of an “AF-ON” button next to the two buttons that are at the top right, next to where your thumb sits. All of the buttons to the left of the screen are switched to being in a row below the screen. The more dial has a bunch of new stuff added to it. Etc. It just looks and feels very different from using a 5d series camera. I also wasn’t a big fan of the output. It wasn’t terrible or anything, but working with the files seemed to be a different experience from what I was used to with my other Canon stuff, and it seemed unusually prone to showing noise at even moderate ISO or when trying to recover shadows at all. Like I said, not a terrible camera by any means, but it was an odd camera that I enjoyed less than this older 30d or my newer 70d.

I use a 30d for daily street photos. It is still a capable camera overall, but when it comes to shooting in low light scenes it starts to show its age and limitations. Noise performance isnt so good, and it can go up to 1600 only without the extended iso. And the autofocus isnt as reliable as newer cameras. Dynamic range isnt on the good side either. It is still a fun camera to use, and its got a certain vintage characteristic that I like.

It definitely shows its age. It is a bit more difficult to get good results in challenging situations, but when it does work out, the results can be great. One of my favorite photos from last year, of my son, was actually taken at a night market with the 30D.

Is this even more film like and a “better pick” than the 40d? I’ve got a 5d2 but want to get another great canon with as much film like photos as possible 👍🏻

I've never tried the 40D. I have owned the 30D, 50D, and 70D. The 50D was my least favorite, by far.

Do you find that you prefer the raws over the jpegs? I found that the raws on my 5d classic required barely any editing and the jpegs were overly compressed and filtered.

It depends on the camera, but most of the time I shoot RAW (and much prefer it). With my Olympus E-M5ii, I usually shot RAW+JPEG so that the RAW file was available if I needed to do any major tweaks to the image. But the majority of the time, I was actually very happy with the JPEG files. On my 5D classic, I am also happy with the JPEG files as long as they don’t need any editing whatsoever. If it was a challenging photo and tweaks need to be made, RAW is the only option as the JPEGs just completely fall apart. With this 30D, I don’t like the JPEGs. They aren’t inherently bad, but they look completely different from the RAW file and I find that I much prefer the look of the unedited or very lightly edited RAW file.

Hi, I just picked up a canon 30d cheap without a CF card, can you recommend a cheap cf brand to me? I don't know the first thing about photography.
@SkylerKing

Your best bet is to look for used CF cards with lower capacities. Most modern CF cards will be very fast (not necessary for the 30D) with a very large capacity (which is not usable) and will be expensive.
