The 5D is a fine photography tool. The screen is fine, put the preview showing the brightness histogram, good photographers know how to read a histogram. Photography 101. People that negatively talk about its dynamic range (so what) don't understand how to use the tool. The tool has an excellent bracketing tool in the custom functions. Good photographers know that you have to bracket certain scenes to capture your vision properly, photography 101. People also complain about the outer auto focus points suck. Well, not on all lenses. A good photographer will pre-check his lenses and see if the lens will perform on the various focus points consistently and If the lens struggles, just use the center point and recompose. Photography 101. The best thing about this 5D tool is its simplicity. The camera doesn't get in the way and allows you to display your creative skill.

bravo Sir 🙂 so many "reviewers" (KZfaqrs really) don't review a camera but just regurgitate what Tony Norhrup or similar has told them because to do any different marks you out as a wrong 'un who clearly has no idea!! I've been told so many times that my camera (a Fujifilm) can't do this or can't do that, that I wonder how can I actually get a picture with it!!

I just love these personal videos and the back to basics vibe! I got a 5d mk2 the other day and I’m trying to figure out the exposure triangle and I want to master it but I find it to be a little difficult and don’t know what setting to use… is there a “default” setting when learning these things or is a more a personal preference kinda thing? I want to shoot nature/landscape and my daughters dance career with her new Spanish partner so I guess this will be my landscaping camera and I have to/want to invest in a 1dx later on 👍🏻

Image quality is definitely different. If size/weight isn't a determining factor, I would recommend the D3s.

You are absolutely right. LCD has very limited role in photography nothing to do much other than setting up/accessing menus. The Dynamic range and ISO performance of latest cameras goes down when the ISO is cracked up. I can compare my 5D Classic and D700's performance with latest gears. I believe that if cameras like Canon 5D and Nikon D2X could produce stunning images back in 2005. Why can't they now? If someone cannot take great photos with these cameras, this is user's fault, not the camera. :)

One of the few persons who accurately described the strengths of the D700 handling and specifically in comparison to the 6D, which I own both and fully agree. I personally just love the control layout of the Nikons and also have a D3s, although one minor annoyance with it is the lack of ability to control auto-iso directly from external controls.

Love the D700, but for me ALL the buttons are not perfectly placed (i.e. the ISO button - which has a much better location on the D850, Z9, etc). The camera could also benefit from a better rear LCD. The monochromatic noise is special.

Is it worth buying in 2024? How much should it cost and should you pay attention to the mileage of the camera? What do you think - what is the maximum mileage it should be? And what lens would be the most universal at a low price, so that it could zoom several times? Maybe there are some other suggestions worth considering? I'm looking for a used camera for $250-400 and I'm wondering whether an older FULLFRAME or a newer APS-C one is better.

Still have the 5D mk1. Bought it used in 2009, 15 years ago, used it a lot and never upgraded. Still works great, no problems ever, still does the job. For me, the nicest lenses were the cheap and lightweight 50mm 1.8 mk2, 35mm f/2.0 non-IS and the not so cheap zeiss c/y 28mm 2.8, even though I own some L zooms. Probably the best digital camera ever produced.

@@SkylerKing understood. I’ve had no issue with the 5d in low light. I think the main thing with modern cameras is it allows people to screw up badly and still rescue a shot. What is interesting is when comparing identical photos and settings…most people still choose the 5d colors in a blind test over my D700, 5dsr, and fujis. The only one they seem to like better than the 5d classic is the Leica MP240. I have too much crap but I like to tinker and play. Cheaper than some hobbies for sure.

Never too many cameras, as long as you enjoy and appreciate all of them. I have never had a Leica. I always wanted to give the M9 a whirl, though, since it has a very rare combination of Leica + Kodak CCD + Full Frame.
@ccoppola82
@ccoppola82 22 күн бұрын
@@SkylerKing for the money the m9 isn’t worth it. The mp240 is the best value M body around. Robust, good battery. Could easily pick it up with a voigtlander 50mm 1.5 II or 35mm f2. Leica does reds right and in photography that’s important to me.

Oh, I miss my D700. There have never been a true successor nor a replacement. D800s were different. Z6III maybe... Or Z8
@SkylerKing
@SkylerKing 23 күн бұрын
I feel like the Z8 is the spiritual successor to the D700. The D3 was a revolutionary jump for Nikon, then they came out with the D700 which was 95% of the same camera in a smaller body at a lower price. Jump forward 15 years and you have the Z9 being a revolutionary jump forward for Nikon. Then they released the Z8, which is 95% the same camera in a smaller body with a lower price.
@aliskandari
@aliskandari 23 күн бұрын
@@SkylerKingagree, Z9/Z8 case is very similar to D3/D700. And modern AF technology finally came to the point where I can use the classic DSLR (or even SLR) "point-focus-compose-shoot" technique again 😅 so handling Z8 is indeed may be considered somewhat similar to D700. Anyway, happy shooting with your new good ol D700

Your comments on the GX1 in the video really moved me, because you expressed the thoughts that have been in my heart for many years. From the day I first bought this camera, I have greatly enjoyed its performance, whether it's the feel, the image quality, or the responsiveness, and I even love the sound of the shutter. Five years later, fearing that it might break down and I wouldn't be able to find a replacement, I bought a brand new identical model. To this day, they remain my most beloved cameras to take out and shoot with. Of course, I've also accumulated more lenses over time, but the 14mm 2.5 lens is still the one I use the most. And in order to recapture more of the feel of photography, I also bought a digital viewfinder. At first it was just to satisfy a nostalgic feeling, but I found that using the DVF for composing shots is ultimately the best method for me, and it's also more power-efficient - I hardly use the rear LCD screen anymore. I believe I will continue using this camera until it can no longer take pictures. Thank you for your video.

You make a point that I tell folks at my photo club. that some of the greatest images in history were taken on this camera, and that great cameras don't stop being great, just because something technically better comes along. I had a 2.1Mp Fuji "Snap Camera". I have some nice snaps from it but it was never destined to be a GREAT camera. I paid £350 (UK) for that in 2001 and £50 for 256Mb CF card !!!! This week I just bought another 5D "classic" for £200 (23 years later!!) and I'll be using a 32Gb card I have lying around, in a CF adapter. To think I have a legendary GREAT camera for the price of a good evening out. It's just incredible to me. The 5D Mk2 is about £300. I bought a 6D for £400. All three cameras for the price of the latest phone. Come on people ... wake up to the opportunities out there. These three cameras have just about the best colour-science known to man. Everything looks beautiful on them, in slightly different ways. (FYI. The 6D is the most underrated camera in history). Agreed on the screen. The only REAL use of a modern screen is as a touch-screen. No professional photographer ever trusted a screen. That's what a Histogram is for.

I used a Canon 5D for a while back (1-2 years) when it was first released. It was one of my first cameras. I never liked the ergonomics of the 5D-how camera settings was displayed in the viewfinder and button layout of the camera. I really liked that Canon had a 50mm 1.2 L lens- and the 5D took really great pictures with that lens. I especially remember the color and bokeh of the 5D was really great with that lens. But in the end, due to the 5D ergonomics-and if memory serves the 5D's low-light performance (I remember it not meeting my expectations)-I gave it to an employee of mine and switched to Nikon. I purchased the D700 and never looked back since. No comparison ergonomic-wise between the two in my opinion-D700 blowed the 5D out of the water. The D700 shots also had a different look than the 5D shots. Kind of hard to explain; never really figured out what it was, but the D700 shots (to me) in general (all things being equal) just looked...more real(?) than the 5D. Better than the 5D? Not sure how to describe it but I liked the D700 better than the 5D back then.

Years back, my workshop had a lot of similar equipment in it too; so I can feel the excitement, and at a certain point in time I too would have been eyeing up the various items you have here for particular tasks (hehe) - but I also know what it is like to shut a business and sell all that off too. I would say, look for a way to make money using it rather than just selling it. Sell off some of it for sure, but if you can retain some and make money off it, or link a new business-in and get a cut (or create one of your own), then that would be a good/meaningful use for it. Are your boys interested in hands-on things yet?

Thanks for this comparison! The cleaner bokeh balls at open aperture of the Olympus and the better sharpness (at least on screen, the close crop was clearly sharper with the Olympus, and the chromatic aberration not visible, even though I know from experience that it's there) let me keep my Olympus and save money. And regarding close focusing - I have an achromatic close-up lens in my bag for the few occasions I want to get closer (and I can use it with my 25 mm lens too), so that's no problem for me. Good to know where the differences are to make an informed decision. And in Germany the Olympus is quite cheap, even new (or at least it was).
