Cool, I’d just chop and drop that poke weed in place, leaving the stumps in the ground and plant tomatoes around them. If the stumps do grow back, and most weeds will, chop again with scissors or pruners until the tomatoes over take them, cheers on a good season🍀

Thank you! I'm so encouraged. I've learned so much from you. I have big dreams for my farm. We contract the fields, but I have an acre around my house to grow veg, fruit, and staples. However, starting from scratch made my dreams seem impossible. How does one tiny 60-year-old woman make enough compost for an acre?!? COVER CROPS!! Thanks. We plan to rotate through sunflowers, clovers, daikons, and winter rye with boking 14 comfrey around the edges and under the fruit trees. Maybe, I'll finally get to put some beans and cornbread on the table made completely from things grown on my place.

I have never made compost for my 22 acre farm. Always a cover crop. And just till the top 1 inch of soil when planting seeds. Plants & cover crops roots feed the soil biology.. Microbes feed the plants nutrients

Pokeweed is edible if cooked properly, and reminds me of boiled spinach. Use the tender 'new' leaves when possible, as the older leaves start getting tough. Cooking: Bring to a boil a large sauce pan full of water with as many fresh young leaves as you reasonably can. After it's been at a rolling boil for 3 to 5 minutes, strain off the cooking water, and refill the pan with fresh water and bring it to a boil again. After achieving a rolling boiling again for 3 to 5 minutes, drain and serve it like boiled spinach. I like some butter, salt, and pepper - and perhaps a touch of vinegar. In fact - I like it enough that I actually grow it on purpose. ;-) The Key Point: Cook in at least two changes of water to remove the components that can cause intestinal distress. Remember that the Native Americans used this plan as a purgative - to clean/clear out their digestive tracts, which is what will happen to you if you eat too much that hasn't been cooked as described above. Note: everybody's digestive system is different, and some will benefit from cooking in 3 changes of water. YMMV.

Missed you Mark. Love this video. Wow! My mind is racing. If I apply your knowledge I will save myself time, energy and money. I’m so grateful that I’ve saved most leaves from three large London Plane Trees. The only problem I have with leaves is that they take so long to break down and when they get wet they form a mat. I don’t have a lawn mower and a line trimmer put into a rubbish bin with leaves takes forever and is soooooo dusty. Any advice please Mark. 🇦🇺
@iamorganicgardening

THANKS Kindly. GOOD NEWS, you do not need to make them break down faster. They are fungi food which you need in your soil. They make a great mulch and release slowly. You want this to be slow.

@@iamorganicgardening makes sense, takes time to turn my thinking around. Common sense tells me to pull small patch of leaves aside to plant new plants into soil. Is that correct? What medium do you use to start seedings? Last question, I’m in Australia, will eucalypt lease be ok?

Hi Mark. Thank you so much for the video. Are you waiting until the night temps reach 55 to plant your tomatoes? If i wait that long it'll be like three weeks from now!
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Ай бұрын
Yes, correct .Plus the soil temp has to be that also. If not the tomato plant will not grow new roots and just sit there. And is a strong change that it will not be healthy later.

Hello Mark...I remember you talking about weeds growing under bacteria-dominant environment. If you have left the leaves there over the past few months, which would have supported fungal growth, how did those weeds come up and more importantly started growing that strong?
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Ай бұрын
That poke weed has a strong tap root almost 2 to 3 feet deep. Leave mold will only help fungi in the top area lets say 1 to 2 inch's. That is why a cover crop is better to grow fungi deeper ( cover crops with longer root growth ) do to its living root as a host to fungi like mycorrhizal .

There was a test done on this ,many years ago. If you use city water with aerator at the end of the hose it mixes with oxygen and gases off. So all good and plants are healthy
@flatsville9343
@flatsville9343 2 ай бұрын
Most municipalities are using chloramine. Check with your water supplier. It won't "gass-off" with agitation or aeration. Run a web search for adding Vitamin C to neutralize.

Takes time to turn my thinking around. Common sense tells me to pull aside leaves to soil level when planting small plants. Is that correct? I worry that unbroken leaves will form a mat which the water cannot penetrate. Do you use aged leaves that the fungi has made smaller when putting in small plants. Also what medium do you use when planting seeds?
@iamorganicgardening

Yes, always plant seeds in soil( pull back the leaf mulch) . I use a potting mix of half sand and have coco coir.. Or all coco coir.

@iamorganicgardening I didn't mean make my reply to sound hopeful. Quite the opposite. This year is a (yet another) record setting year for global temps for oceans & land. In the past 12 years, my grow zone has increased 1 full step; one half step in 2012, another in Nov 2023. The USDA adjusts these zones after the fact as the rising (or declining) temp data dictates. The increasing heat will alter the Agricultural landscape significantly & our ability to deal with rising C02 which has a limit for the kind of crops we're accustomed to/reliant upon. The Ag gigs we've built likely don't have the resiliency to cope unless radically adjusted in the not too distant future. We are in the FO years of FAFO.
