Many a v6 also has balance shafts which commonly run at twice engine RPM, and act as if there was a huge dual mass flywheel attached (Inertia for the loss). V6 = 4 mains, I6 = 7 (Ordinarily, that is). More mains = more crank stability. And I agree with regards to incremental upgrades for fuel efficiency. We've got 0w-16 oil on some cars, high rolling resistance tires, 10 speed transmissions (Which are only a few % more efficient than past 6 speed boxes). We got radiator flaps, start-stop systems, PCM-controlled alternator charging, variable pressure oil pumps, electric fans, electric water pumps and even electric power steering pumps. Some cars ditch the throttle body to reduce pumping losses (BMW Valvetronic for example). Some of this stuff is actually good for us (Windage trays for example) while other stuff is bad. The Hemi is hard to control emissions on, because it is a hemi. Hard to reduce the crevice volume because it's domed. That's also why the hemi really doesn't look like a hemi, and especially the later heads where it really doesn't resemble a hemisphere at all. Then there is the weight, the Hemi is cast iron, and that's an awful lot of weight to be pushing around, and going with an aluminum block is a really easy way to drop weight. It is a shame however that it is a DI-only engine. That was fine in the mid 2000's, but it is well known that DI engines are really problematic because of PCV fumes. All the fancy vortec-style PCV systems in the world don't make it much better than a lazy PCV system without it. And you can take a poorly take care of PFI engine with 200k miles and it will have valves that look better than a meticulously maintained DI engine at 40k. Ford does have that new oil spec SN+ I think, and it specifically is designed to help with DI problems. While I am skeptical it will help, hopefully I'm wrong. In regards to cast pistons, casting now with todays better metallurgy is far better than it was in the 80's where a cast piston was likely a death sentence for a force fed engine. I think the biggest problem with some turbo engines (re: the high strung comments) is that if they run high PSI, then it means they are much more at risk of a sluggish torque curve (Whereas with bigger displacement but smaller boost level will allow more more streetable torque curves).

Reason is I have a 1960 Dodge Town panel with a slant 6 four-wheel drive four-speed manual with creeper gear and a factory power winch that comes off the transfer case. Was thinking of turbocharging the slant 6 but if Mopar puts these engines and as many vehicles as we're thinking if I give it some time I'm sure I can find one in a salvage yard and adapt it to fit. I think the designers missed the boat by not incorporating a port/direct fuel injection system on the Hurricane engine. Carbon build up in DI engines is a real problem. Periodic cleaning is only treating the symptom and not curing the disease.

Prior to migrating to Dodge from BMW which had a direct injection inline 6s, I will say that the quality of gas makes a huge difference in keeping the fuel system clean and improving the reliability of a direct injection motor. In my vehicle and many others the Hurricane has been one of the cleanest motors ive ever seen, at least with this amount of power. When the 2.0 first hit the market a lot of Jeep Nerds thought running an oil catch can wouldve helped a lot, but after a whole year of running it they saw they werent catching anything. Bore scope was used to confirm the valves were clean too.

The Hurricane Six is very underrated in power especially the hi output version. I seen a test of a fully loaded wagoneer with this engine and the curb weight was close to 7 thousand pounds. Is there any R&D for a larger 6cyl say in the 6.0l range for the Ram 2500 &3500? I have owned and worked on the heavy-duty pickups since the 70s and found in most cases the larger displacement gas v8s were much more cost efficient than the diesel. The power to weight vs cost after the cost of diesel exceeded the cost of gas just wasn't there anymore. The manufacture's listed towing capacities were pretty much the same until 2004/2005, but the initial cost had risen from around $1200 to over $9500 for the diesel option plus an extra charge for the heavy-duty transmission. The market could use a 6.0l with 400+ horsepower and 600+ lbft of torque.

The entire answer that Stellanis wanted with these new engines was they wanted to keep the power like a Hemi motor. Just not the size or the weight the Hemis have. Plus it keeps the fines lower than they would pay for the EPA regulation violations with the Hemi motors in the Charger and Challengers. Okay?

I know that video of the challenger drag pack or whatever it's called was pretty underwhelming, it looked pretty soft as a teddy bear on the launch and it sounded super lame. Obviously an inline 6 can sound sick like a built 2Js ect but that thing nope sounded like every other factory stock inline 6, why they would spice it up a little is beyond me. Quite often a first year vehicle can have a bugs but it shouldn't go up for sale with huge issues those should be ironed out before it goes up for sale that's just putting the R&D into the customers hands that's totally unacceptable just another cost cutting measure the customer has to pay for in headaches and inconvenience. My 88 Silverado first year of the GMT 400 line a total new platform and the only issue was grease less ball joints GM replaced them on recall then that thing was rock solid until it was retired with buku miles in the 2000s, my 95 mustang is a 2nd year model but the 94 was identical and a solid reliable vehical ford didn't do anything to them even my grandmother's 86 Taurus wagon had minimal minor issues that was a good car, the new 97 Ford f150 great reliable vehical and another totally new platform so no very few 1st year vehicals of any brand is a giant POS unless it's one of those brands that notoriously manufacturer terribly unreliable cars like BMW or Maserati and lancia.

IMO, comparing exhaust notes between a 6 and an 8 was a silly thing to do in the first place which is why I skipped right past that section of the video when I watched it, sorry. People who are watching your channel are most likely gearheads and SHOULD know that to get any type of decent sound from a 6 or 4 requires a ton of engine & exhaust specialization either at the factory or aftermarket. That's only going to be done for performance models where the manufacturer is purposely TRYING to get a decent note for the target demographic the car is made for, not on a luxury SUV. All the new performance 4 and 6 bangers out there with their pops and rumbles are engineered to make those sounds from the factory. People need to face the facts, those pops & rumble are the replacement sounds for the deep growl and rumble of the 8's, 10's & 12's that are going away. At least the turbocharged and supercharged engines will still make their unique sounds. People need to take that as a win, say their prayers at the tombstones of their preferred big blocks and move on. My dad told me there's no shame in a man to shedding a tear but that it's unacceptable for a man to whine like a bitch. The transition to electrification and small, fuel efficient, engines have revealed a huge number of whiners and it's starting to make me a little sick. Sorry if that comes across like I'm an asshole, I don't "completely" mean it that way but it is getting silly at this point. Eventually they'll create teleporters like in Star Trek and vehicles will be obsolete and completely disappear. Can you picture the crowds of people whining about that instead of being amazed at the advancement? Human beings are annoying. 😂 On another topic, I found it funny that you're talking about these hundred-thousand-dollar Jeep's like they're a product only an alien would purchase. Considering the ridiculous amount of money that motorheads are dropping for their Chargers, Challengers, SRT Durango's & Trackhawks etc. isn't that the same thing? I personally think those customers are just as insane as the people dropping crazy cash on the Grand Wagoneer. Gearheads are paying the same crazy money for performance and the Wagoneer owners are paying that crazy money for the luxury. I'm old enough to have lucked out and purchased my muscle car before people lost their minds and started dropping the same amount of money that you used to mortgage a house for. If I wanted a muscle car today there's no way in hell I would pay what those people are paying. Even if I was loaded.

BMW engines have been ruined already as the computer mistakenly asks for more oil to be added and no dipstick to double check the oil level, leading to excess oil in the engine. Not high strung ? stuck in the 70s? ok yo yo what will happen if there's a loss in fuel pressure? Do YOU personally know How much pressures the head is going to hold? High pressure pump for direct injection. I see a history of early failed 60psi pumps across all brands and aftermarket. and that's nothing to the kind of pressures DI demands. What have they done to prevent build up on the valves with the 10% ethanol crap fuel. O2 censors are not exactly fool proof so what happens If the computer starts skewing the AFR? My point is this , there is know way of knowing the long terms of this engine yet. Its making power in high RPM coupled with additional forced induction forces transferred to the connecting Rod . That pressure is a big factor on long life of an engine. Heck even a plugged fuel filter could drastically effect AFRs . and those Barra and 2JZs running those hp numbers are constantly cleaned and checked for blockages and failures. How often you think joe average is going to dedicate to that ? And then lets say the computers handle it all . put the motor into limp mode and protect the motor. how does that equate to sitting on the side of the freeway, getting towed and the awesome bill they get for say fuel filter replacement. Or the REAL possibility of the dealer claiming lack of maintenance warranty void. I have reservations on a DI motor , and I resent your comment this is backwards 70s thinking. The motor on it's face has every indicator of a high strung engine.

Direct injection is not new technology, I first worked on them in 2010, holding fuel pressure is not an issue lol. Think about any common rail diesel engine for the last 20 years, they are running much higher PSI numbers than gas engines ever will. That tech is not the problem. You're also claiming that Barra and 2J engines are constantly being taken apart to be checked over? What on earth are you talking about? Maybe ones that are running 1300+ horsepower. All of your comments are showing your ignorance toward modern technology and how good it is, and how reliable. As I mentioned multiple times in the video, we don't yet know how THIS particular engine will hold up in the long term. But the simple truth is that small displacement turbocharged engines have been making good power reliably for a very long time. And if my choices are to have a twin turbo gas engine, or an electric vehicle, I'm going to choose the gas engine.

@@ReignitedAuto no one said DI was new. using it on gas motors with todays shit fuel is. Its not about holding pressure it is about pressure loss from pump failure which is common. do you not understand running high boost and the AFRs go lean the motor will destroy itself quickly . dependability? tell that to Cummins and there CP4 pump. That comes from a straight lack of testing products, and using shit material which most manufacturers are guilty of in your " modern" era. and there making there max power in the higher RPM band. So ya there is a real concern of these engines dependability . high RPMs High boost levels. Ya !makes them very suspect of being a high strung engines.

The hurricane is a bad engine because of the liquid cooled turbos and direct injection and very expensive to repair won’t buy a ram with that motor. They should keep the hemi as an option. Your not going to give this engine a bad rap you work for dodge fiat.

Ya well no, dodge just lost my business. To me no matter how many turbos you hang off the side it still is a six banger. You can make big power with a Briggs and Stratton if you poke enough air into it. Years ago they made cars with three wheels. One could argue that it would cost less to buy new tires however that would not necessarily make it a good thing. I have been a Mopar fan and supporter since the 1960s muscle cars but sadly this 6 banger breaks the camel's back. I put this in the league of putting speakers on the back of an electric car to simulate a muscle car. I can hardly wait for the after market exhaust sound options, maybe it will sound like a hippo grunt, who knows. Suffice it to say that Ford managed to keep it's V8 and for that reason Mustang here we come. Don't mess with a legend, you will never replace the Hemi.

Dodge should come out with like a FJ Cruiser / RamCharger styled vehicle. Have it be the size of the FJ and put that hurricane engine in it. That would put dodge on the map again.
