Over the years, I've noticed the vast majority of beginner photographers use Lightroom to edit their photos. And most of these beginner Lightroom users are highly intimidated of the sheer thought of using Photoshop, even though most people would agree , Photoshop is by far the most powerful photo editing platform available. In my opinion, Mark, the most effective workflow involves opening the raw file as a smart object in Photoshop. This allows for a seamless connection to Lightroom settings, and you can stack additional layers on top, just as you did. When you save the file and return it to Lightroom, you have the option to revisit the initial adjustments if you open the saved file again in Photoshop and select "open original," you'll find all the layers intact, including the original Lightroom settings. This is the only method that leaves a trail back to the RAW file. Good thoughts, Ron

If you could have a trail back to the original raw then you might as well just do everything in Lightroom and not use photoshop at all. I think the whole point of going to photoshop is when you need to work on the actual pixels.

@TheSmartWoodshop: You are absolutely right. If you transfer from Lightroom directly to Photoshop as a smartobject, the CameraRawFilter takes over the settings from Lightroom, and you can see the changes from the filter later in Lightroom. The filter recognises the snapshots from Lightroom, you can create snapshots in the filter that are transferred to Lightroom - it's mega ingenious, but care with the warning message that settings were changed outside of Lightroom. The only problem with going to PS is that you end up with a TIFF or PSD file. These are huge. I try to stay in LR as much as possible to never leave the RAW file!

Another quality video, Mark. My only suggestion is that a metaphor with transparent sheets atop a single paper sheet (background layer) might work better as paper layers tend to evoke an opaque quality that you didn't imply. But I really could have used this when I first rolled up my cuffs and waded into Photoshop!

I have been a photography enthusiast for more than 50 years and I have to say that the picture you posted this week (which I saw a number of places) is one of the best I have ever seen. I came at this backwards from most. I’ve used Photoshop for over 20 years but until 5 years ago, did everything destructively - editing directly on the layer itself. Ctl z was probably my most used ”adjustment.” I was self taught so never learned about adjustment layers. Layers and masking with adjustment layers was a total game changer for me. The next game changer was learning about Smart Objects and Camera Raw followed by realizing masking was available in Camera Raw a year ago. At 70, I’m still amazed at how much there is to learn about the tools Adobe provides.

Thanks Mark. Firstly I'd like to comment on the photograph you were using... it is outstanding! I've seen it now more than several times on social media sites in just one day and now on your weekly video... still amazed. (btw, I've just returned 14:28 from Indonesia myself). In relation to the tutorial, I was hooked right off the bat when you showed me a 'photography workspace'. I'm fairly experienced in Lightroom and have only dipped my toe in the Photoshop sandpit, but now can't wait to try more. Thanks again.

Thank you, Mark! I've always had a love/hate (start/stop) relationship with Ps which has caused me to just stick with Lightroom. But starting with this explanatory tutorial today, I think I might give it a proper go now. Mark, I have tontell ya brotha. After 21 years in the Army, your presentations on Lightoom and Photoshop are exactly what I've gone through over the last 21 years. The Army's motto for training is the acronym, K.I.S.S. Keep it simple Stupid. This means make the training as simple as you can and avoid the confusing complexities. You nail it every time. Hi Mark, I agree - you do have skills with simplifying more complex concepts. I enjoyed both your picture and the "trip you made to photoshop". One potential point of clarification is (my understanding) the Camera Raw "engine" is the same whether in Lightroom or Photoshop or the standalone App. For heavy pixel manipulation and some of the newer AI resources, the need to visit Photoshop (from Lightroom) is my preferred workflow. For me personally is to know the "When" to visit Photoshop and once I get there "How" to get in, make my edits, and get out as quickly as possible. With so many features continuously being introduced to both packages, you'll have enough material for years of KZfaq videos.

Totally agree with this workflow. I first was pulled in to photoshop (from lightroom) for the heal and clone tools. Now with the smart filters, I spend so much more time in photoshop for my final edits.

I've been following your channel for a long time, it's always a lesson in each video. As a photography enthusiast, I use lightroom, and photoshop, basically to take elements from photographs and little else. And why, I'm not very comfortable with photoshop, but with this lesson I understood better how photoshop works and I'm going to practice more. It is without a doubt a powerful tool. In short, Photoshop is like an overhead projector, on which we put overhead projectors, or rather we put (today we have keynote, powerpoint) overhead projectors with the information we intended to pass on and in the end we had the total information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and information. Until forever

Great video and the analogy finally makes sense thanks to your description. Question please...... what is the difference between "Control+Shift+Alt+E" vs "Select all Layers using SHIFT+ RIght Click" = Merge Layers.......In your example it becomes "Layer 1" and in mine It eliminates the original 3 layers and becomes "colour fill 1 (or what ever the last layer was called)

I would definitely like to see you do more Photoshop videos. Regarding layers, someone once explained them to me similarly but used the analogy of those old overhead-projector transparency sheets. You can lay a transparency sheet on top of the base image sitting on the projector, draw on it or make adjustments, and both the adjustments on the top transparency and the base image are visible on the screen the projector is pointing at.

Another great video, Mark! Yes, I tried Adobe Camera RAW like one year ago, I used it, I like it, but Adobe Photoshop always scared me! I think this approach "Photoshop - Adobe Camera RAW , back and forth" is great and I will start to use it more. In this way, as you said, the Photoshop becomes more friendly :) What I discovered on my own: since the latest update (12.4), Lightroom takes a looot of resources on my laptop. Is true, I don't have a great laptop, but still, with the pretty much the same resources, the older versions were better. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but now I can not any more open in Lightroom 5 RAW files because it freezes, no more ram memory, no more disk space. What I found on the internet seems to be related to the fact that I dont have at least 20% free space on my disk (I had it before neither). What I figured out: I preview my photo from Adobe Bridge, I select as many I want to edit and I open all on Adobe Camera RAW directly -> so there is no Photoshop, no Lightroom open. For my hardware it is far away better in this way. The Adobe Camera RAW itself, open from Adobe Bridge, works much better, much smoother, and it seems do not need too many resources (RAM, CPU etc). I didn't know that the ACR could be open alone (not as a filter from Photoshop), but works super great open from Bridge.

Mark, this video was very interesting and certainly helped me see reasons to use Adobe Camera Raw in my workflow. One big issue I have is how to get all the Lightroom Classic Develop Module Presets, built in many years, available in ACR. One would think Adobe would have figured out how these sync but evidently not. I rely on my presets and would want them to sync continuously for me to be comfortable using ACR regularly.

This saved me so much time, before I knew this I was editing my photos in LR then heading over to PS where I was editing and then saving my photoshop files, heading back over to lightroom, editing it a little more and then sometimes heading back to photoshop to do more editing.

The healing tool was what led me to PS first (and now the remove tool!) and then I learned a new skill every once in a while and now I'm very comfortable in PS. BUT you can still use LR for initial adjustments, then "Open as smart object in PS" (since you can still open Camera Raw and all your LR adjustments are there), do your PS thing, and then save it back to LR.

Ive been using Lightroom for a good many years now and only dipping into Ps when LRc is unable to photomerge a pano due to number of images etc. I have literally just sat down and followed you through this process on my Macbook pro and this 'has' made me much more comfortable about using Ps. many thanks

The thing is that now with layers available in LR there is less and less reason to go to PS. And that’s also a good way to get more familiar with layers without going into PS. 😊 I most of the time now go to PS only for my best work. One type ot tools that is really lagging far behind is the cloning and healing brush tools.

Great explanation, Mark. I mostly do my image enhancements in LR, but turn to Photoshop CC, and now Photoshop (Beta), mostly for Generative AI, for compositing, and for using the many custom brushes (e.g., Adobe provided brushes from Kyle Webster, True Grit Texture, RetroSupply, etc.) that I have. As far as I can tell, there isn't a capability in LR to use such custom brushes.

The advantage of starting with LR first for me is the camera presets and easy and precise colour balance and then the new ai filters for sky and subject plus auto transform to fix small distortions or alignment. I only invoke PS to use remove tool etc which work great. But my workflow leaves everything non destructive and in raw unless I actually need the power of PS.

At the end of the day, the question remains.. why? All the edits you showed can be easily done in Lightroom. Just more clicks to achieve the same in Photoshop. With intelligent masking in Lightroom, there are fewer reasons to jump to Photoshop. I have specific reasons I jump into Photoshop, for example photo stacking. Object removal. What are the others?

Nice. I thought it was just me that wasn't quite understanding the reasons for jumping the image to PS, as this all sounded like many extra unnecessary steps to achieve the same thing in LR. What I see people doing is playing excessively with too many sliders that are available, then transporting the image back and fourth between imaging software , making it look like something completely devoid of what the scene actually looked like in real life. Then, finally kicking out a JPEG and calling themselves tall as a photographer.... LOL

Thanks very much Mark, that was most informative. The Photography Workspace tip was a game changer for me! I have only been stumbling around in Photoshop to remove backgrounds when they are too messy to do in Lightroom by just adjusting the background exposure, but is relatively easy in Photoshop, assuming the masking is clean enough, otherwise it an be a laborious task (not compared to the old days though, I bet). I will use Photoshop more as I do want to tap into its power when I have the right use cases, but I really don’t understand why there is a “Remove Background” function in Lightroom, for me it is just about the only major feature missing at the moment. Do you know why, or when it may be introduced? Cheers and thanks again.

The key to this though is that you must convert for Smart Filters otherwise CR will work more or less reset itself and "stack" edits if you don't convert for smart filters first. This is something you don't have to do in LR though as it recalls your edits when you bring up the image or add new edits, but PS is a bit different in this regard. Fun fact is that this is how it used to be before LR was developed. You'd open a photo in Photoshop usually and the ACR Dialog box would pop up if it was a RAW file and you'd edit this way using the ACR Dialog box and this was the reason Adobe did Lightroom because for some it was tedious, plus people wanted a way to organize photos better (as Bridge is an ancient program and not as intuitive as LR's library module and lacks the better organizational features -- Bridge is basically a file/folder parsing program like Windows Explorer or Mac Finder).

Great video today. I am one of those that relies solely on Lightroom and intimidated by Photoshop, however I want to do some things like sky replacements and such. My biggest hesitation is with the cataloging and saving of original photos and edited photos. More video on photoshop would be great.

Hi Mark, coming from film and chemistry printing I understand the nuances to digital photo retouching. I used digital editing quite a lot in the past and returning now to P/S quite significantly as a main stay in my work flow. Been watching various channels - Have to say so far to date having watched this episode yours for me anyways was the most enjoyable and presented very well I’ve watched so far. I’m interested in grading black and white by localising specific areas within the image - Dodging and Burning in darkroom practices. Can you help?

Hi Mark. Great video. Thank you. I think your viewers would get a lot of value if you were to do a quick follow up video on how to save your changes from PS back to LRC so you can open them back up in PS and continue the edit. I cannot recall which channel already did this, but it was a little over complicated. Thanks

Thanks I am already familiar with everything you said, My Question is What are the Trees in the Photograph, You mentioned Malaysia, I live in Thailand and go to Malaysia often. The photo is stunning and I have never seen those trees. The reflection and trees is amazing. Great shot.

Thanks Mark. You've heard correct.....you are very good at simplifying complex issues. I use Photoshop far more than I do Lightroom. I really like your discussion on smart filters as I really haven't used them much but I will now. I would really enjoy more photoshop videos from you. I'd also like to see anything you have for dealing with lens flare in the field. I'll shoot 2 images when I'm shooting into the sun - generally say f/16 and f/5.6 or so and then blend in photoshop. Do you have any favorites methods you have for dealing with flare? Hope things are well. Looks like you had a great trip to Indonesia. Nice pic! Tom

I consider myself a lightroom expert but photoshop I rarely use. Great video I will try this approach.. and would love to see more especially like to see the advantages of photoshop over lightroom.

I am a Lr guy. I have used Ps for resizing and making logos. I never really understood the fascination with Ps for editing photos. Most images don't need anything fancy that would require Ps. Now, if you are into graphics, then that's different. My issue with Ps is the way the masking works. To complicated on Ps, but as you said Cr is Lr which I knew, then you would just is it instead. I don't get the image flow between bridge, Cr, catalogs, Ps....etc. that would be a whole paid class to figure it out to the point of comfort. Great stuff, as always, Mark!

If you do (in LR) Select Photo > Edit In > Open as Smart Object Layers in Photoshop, then you don't need add smart in PS later

I do this on and off, depending on the image. One tip I can give your viewers, use photoshop to do all your spot cloning, especially skies. It has far more power and control than LR. Up the contrast and those pesky sensor spots show up like you wouldn’t believe.

Great advice! I’d rather not use LR anymore. I switched to Bridge 2 years ago and use PS almost exclusively but also go into ACR as needed.

I learned what I know about PS right here on YT. It was frustrating at first until I decided to focus on one technique at a time. Once I realized that I didn’t have to learn everything it can do to make it work for me it took the pressure off. I’ll never be an expert but I don’t care. I’m getting what I want from the program for the most part. That’s good enough for me.

Im sorry, maybe im a bit slow here but are you saying :- make adjustments in LR then send it to PS in order to open it in CR and make LR ( effectively) adjustments that i could have made in LR? Im sure i must be missing something.

A bit off topic but, I was a C1 user until recently. As a landscape and nature advanced photographer, I feel LR offers right now a wider bunch of tools and updates quite often. Masks are far superior, a tool where C1 has remained obsolet for me. Thanks for the video, Mark
