Couldn't agree more! PNSO is one of those companies that delivers not just on sculpting detail and scientific accuracy, but in the quality of the paintwork as well. It's so heartbreaking to see companies like Safari have really good sculpts, and then botch it with paintjobs that don't bring out all that hard work.

Another stellar review! This is the first review I’ve seen of the “new and improved” Wilson and it’s even nicer than I’d expected. Easily, the most accurate T. rex figure to date. The teeth looked a little off-putting in the publicity stills but in-hand not so bad. A must get! Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Great review as always, and thanks for including the Zhao Chuang bits! During a conversation with one of our fans, the question of the scales' size emerged. Since even the "island" scales, Based on Bell's Paper, measure about 5 mm, the ones we see on the actual figure are probably still too large. That said, this figure is fantastic, and even the currently debated features are so well executed they're beautiful to look at.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and you are very right of course, in general the scalation is probably too big. The idea that each represents an island of smaller scales only helps me sleep SLIGHTLY better at night, not completely 🤣 I would say that at 1:35, the EoFauna Giganotosaurus is probably closer to what you could expect, although I like to think that some theropods might have larger osteoderms like we see in Carnotaurus. Of course that can only be speculative since to my knowledge none have been definitively found in most theropods. But all in all, I think it's a balance between being scientifically accurate, and keep visual and tactile interest. Thank you for sharing!

I just love your attitude to your reviews. It’s a pleasure to see how you comment so many details not because they are beautifully made (and that too) but comparing to the newest scientific researches. I like paleontology very much but my knowledge is still minor but your reviews help to lift it up. Really thank you also for the nice capturing, closeups and comparisons with other models. And I find really interesting that your channel includes both dinosaurs and dragons. P.S. your English is getting better and better. At least I can understand it pretty clear, lol :’D

I'm so happy to hear you say that. Palaeontology is something I've always loved, although I have to say only the sexy side of things, such as dinosaurs! I hope to one day do a course. If you love it, check out Dr Philip Currie's courses on Coursera. I think they give you a very good start. Other than that, there are many papers that are freely available online, so I suggest reading up on your favourite dinosaurs to begin with. Of course I realise to get really serious, I need to start learning about the less sexy side of things, such as geological processes, laboratory techniques, and so on, but one day! And thank you, I have been taking English lessons, so hopefully it's a lot easier to understand than years ago when I started! 😀 I've always loved dinosaurs and dragons! Initially I started with the McFarlane dragons, and when I finished reviewing all I had, there was nothing for a while, until I discovered Safari dragons, as well as a viewer suggesting I have a look at the Monster Hunter figures. So I'm glad the dragons part is getting some life too!

@@anastaschwarzewolfin8016 Thank you Anasta! To be fair, the idea of building up a huge following never crossed my mind, so I haven't done all the optimizing I could be doing for that. If the way I prefer to do my reviews, sharing knowledge in addition to a straight description, is enjoyed by a few who will appreciate their figures even more for it, it makes me happier than amassing a huge number of followers, but having to conform to the norms needed to optimize the KZfaq algorithm. Just ordered mine, can't wait to get it. I could live with the lack of lips and feathers since these two features are still subject to debate. The presence of gastralia, on the other hand cannot be contested and is taken into account in this bulky figure, a big plus point for me.

Normally I don’t buy T. rex figures because how common they are and of how bland T. rex is comparably to other more ornate theropods or its relatives (I can practically hear the mob coming my way, but I’m sorry Tarbosaurus is more interested, there I said it) but honestly I might actually pick this guy up. I’m loving this more bulky look you don’t usually get in rex figures (minus the Safari rex, inaccurate feathering or not I still love that figure).

@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually one of the drawbacks of a dinosaur that is so popular, that it seems there will always be new incarnations, and because this dinosaur is so well-known, there really wouldn't be much to set each one apart, design-wise. Unless you're a completist, it does make sense to be very selective. That's one reason I had to pass on a few. I usually forego those that are based on JP in favour of more accuracy, so in that sense it's a bit easier for me to make choices. That said, this PNSO has so much research into it, and offers so many unique learning points, that it was a no-brainer to get it! I would sure like to have some other tyrannosaur representatives down the road, with Tarbosaurus or Daspletosaurus being popular alternatives. In fact the only figure from Safari I'm considering for this year is their 2012 Daspletosaurus.

Those reticulate scales are beautiful, even if they're bigger than they would have been in life, and they cover the bottoms of the feet like they would have on the real animal! I love how you point out the little details like the claws being blunt. They remind me of the claws on my dog, which makes sense when those are walking claws.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I thought it was extremely interesting and would give anyone a better appreciation of fine details that went into the design process. Actually a dog would have been a more appropriate parallel than a cat, because dogs don't retract their claws. Still, the fact that cat claws blunt even when often retracted shows just how much blunting would really occur in real life!

Thank you for a wonderfully well-researched, knowledgable review. I learned a few things as well as being entertained. All this enhances the model for me a lot. I am waiting for my model to arrive soon. This might well be my favorite representation of Tyrannosaurus rex in a toy model until now. I like the featherless and lipless appearance, but I can’t be bothered to have any preference for either ‘for’ or ‘against’ - as long as the scientific reasoning is sound and the figure is well-modelled, with attention to detail and with good proportions. (Although I do feel that feathers on Tyrannosaurus rex don’t “feel” right - but then again, what do I know...) I also love the big barrel chest and a non-protruding pubic bone, and its bulky, beefy appearance in general. The longer you study the details on this model, the more you can appreciate the study that has gone on in designing it. As just one example, I love how the two bundles of caudofemoralis(?) muscle can be seen on the underside near the base of the tail. This indicates a high attention to scientific accuracy, I think. Edit: I found an argument by Mark Witton that goes against the way this animal’s mouth/teeth are portrayed. He points to the fact that animals don't close their mouths as far as dinosaurs are often shown. Showing a dinosaur with mouth closed as far as the bones allow - to the point that the jaw bones would be touching at any point along their length - is not realistic. The muscles and skin would not allow for the teeth to overlap much with the bones of the jaws when the mouth was closed. This seems to negate the only good argument against lips, as brought forward by the scientific consultant of the PNSO Tyrannosaurus rex model, when he indicates how the teeth of the lower jaw would fit into holes in the upper jaw and thus protecting the teeth in the lower jaw. Since, if the teeth in real life would not be able to overlap much with the jawbones when the mouth was closed (I think the drawing at 3:29 illustrates this beautifully), then the newest PNSO Tyrannosaurus model is wrong in that regard as well. (In that model, when the mouth is closed, the teeth in the upper jaw protrude almost as low as the underside of the lower jaw!)

I'm very happy you liked the video! This one was especially interesting to do because of how much research has been done, and how many people already know so much about it. I was not quite prepared for the lively discussions that ensued regarding lips and scalation! Like you I am not emotionally invested one way or the other. I enjoy learning about the latest ideas, and to see them incorporated into figures, but as long as the models are beautifully proportioned, with fantastic detail, and there was a reason why the sculptor made the choices he did, I can enjoy each as such. I still enjoy my Wild Safari 1:40 T Rex! I wish I'd commented on the tail musculature! Yes indeed, surface anatomy is enjoyable and really enhances overall enjoyment of the model. I hope you have received yours and are enjoying him first hand by now!

DinosDragons My “specimen” has arrived, and I can say that in hand, this model is just awesome, and I dare say I have never seen a toy model that is trying to be (and succeeding wonderfully, for as far as I can tell) as thoroughly scientifically correct as this one, where every little bit about it has been well thought out and researched. Although the individual scales may be too big for the scale of this model, we may take this as a liberty taken to be able to point out the variation in patterning and sizes of the scales on different parts of the body, and as such I think this model can be called a success as well. From being able to imagine how the skeleton defines the shape and posture of the real, living animal, to seeing the bulges and dips indicating musculature, to seeing the different scale patterns and sizes, I am quite in awe of this model, which is well worth its prize, in my opinion. I initially thought about repainting/retouching the model, but since I quite like the paint job as it stands, I won’t - and generally I prefer to keep the models in their original colors anyway, especially with relatively expensive ones as this one. I love the slight gloss that is over the upper side and head, making the scales glisten slightly in the light, which along with the wonderful details gives the model another little layer of visual depth.

About the exposed teeth, people argued that they should be completely covered, and that exposed teeth only occurs in animals that live in the water, but they must have have forgotten all about saber-toothed animals. Lots of extant and extinct animals have portruding canine teeth, and in many cases, those are their most valuable tool and weapons. Musk deer, warthogs, walrusses, beavers, gorgonopsids, saber toothed marsupials, and many other animals. So I don't really see why that's even an argument, that "the teeth couldn't have possibly been exposed", as some have said. Google a Ceratosaurus skull and look at the images; those teeth are so long it's almost silly to suggest they were fully covered by lips. They'd almost certainly be at least partially exposed imo. I'm new to your channel, watched a couple of your videos and I must say that you're probably the best reviewer I've seen on here. Very informative. Love this Tyrannosaurus by the way. I don't really have an expensive Tyrannosaurus in my collection, which is kinda crazy now that I think about it, but for some reason I've never really purchased a really high quality Rex before. The best ones I have are from Papo, and some smaller sized models. I do own a Rebor Tyrannosaurid, but that's Yutyrannus. For some reason I just dislike the typical Jurassic Park models, and many Tyrannosaurs are modelled after the JP Rex. I love JP, but when it comes to models I just don't really care all that much about the movie renditions. There are still some other contenders I'm considering, but I do like this Tyrannosaurus rex model, quite a lot. Something about it; it just looks like a real animal. I might have to pick this up.
@vividsky1669

That ceratosaurus skull has suffered tooth slippage, iirc it wouldnt have been nearly as rediculous, also should note that hippos and Nile monitors exist, despite having huge teeth they complete,y covered in short tissue when the mouth is close, and in the Nile monitors case, mostly covered even when open so I'd be more skeptical o it being lippless
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
@XaeeD Thank you, I try my best to share the knowledege I've learnt in the hopes that it will help everyone appreciate these models and enjoy them even more! Personally, I love JP, but I just never liked their models because I like a degree of accuracy to my figures as I have so little space and limited funds. For that reason, the JP figures as well as so many modelled on them like Papo or Nanmu, I can't really get interested in. Also there are so many T-rex models that it would be impossible to buy all nor do I want to be a completist. So I've had to choose really carefully, and I have to say that for now, this one from PNSO would be on my must-buy-Trex list! Regarding skulls... any animal after death will suffer some degree of tooth slippage, because what holds them in place (the gums, the ligaments and other soft tissues) rot away and relax their hold on the teeth, so the teeth slip out from their sockets. What you'll often see is both the tooth crown and the tooth root. Mark Witton also notes that while there are animals with exposed teeth, teeth used for actual processing of food are covered. Tusks and canines are not, so they don't have lips over those. In general teeth that are distinctly larger might stick out, but even then there are examples of large teeth that will still be covered, such as the Mandrill. All in all, a very interesting debate that I will enjoy from the sidelines without putting any money on it!😀

I've noticed that PNSO doesn't often follow what their poster gives you. That being said, I'm glad that this one didn't have feathers because leaving aside phylogenetics, the few samples of tyrannosaur skin we have really don't show evidence of feathers, save for those puckers that might or might not have held anything at all. Unfortunately it's not cheap, like PNSO's regular figures. Even the box is a lid type, with foam inserts and everything, just like with the Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus. So clearly it's intended to be one of their premium figures. That said, I suggest getting one earlier if you can. Later production runs tend to produce figures with poorer paintjob and QC.

I have a great Tyrannosaurus rex model from Master Fossil/GRIFFON ENTERPRISES. For example, it reproduces the shape of scales from known skin prints. Even the teeth in cross-section have the correct shape - the front ones are like a chisel, the middle ones are like a banana. I have not seen such thoroughness in the transfer of details anywhere else. But your review makes you think about buying a model from PNSO.

Thank you for your comment. Wow I have not heard of this one until I read it! From what you write it must be pretty damn detailed! I looked up prices though... they are way beyond my budget 😅 Having the correctly shaped teeth for the respective positions on the jaw would surely be awesome! I would say that if you wanted a cheaper smaller model for everyday handling, then PNSO or even the much older Wild Safari T Rex might be something to consider!

Thank you! There have actually been many artists who have been modding lips onto this figure, but as to scales, it seems like it would be a very extensive job as you can't just add a layer over the existing without changing the proportions. I have no doubt that an artist somewhere has done just that though!

I have to agree there! Out of all my T Rexes, he's my favourite. I believe how much you like him also depends on how passionate you are about the lips and/ or feathers issue. I absolutely appreciate the fact that PNSO made this 1:35 scale T.rex based from a 12 m. specimen and not by Sue or Scotty because the majority of Adult T.rexes would have been at this size when compared to Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus. Also, quick question. Will you be picking up the GR Toys Carcharodontosaurus?
@DinosDragons

I'm thinking about it. I think GR Toys did some good work with their Spinosaurus, although as I expected the actual colour didn't live up to the promise of the product images. The blue Cacharodontosaurus is so incredibly painted, with so much complexity, I fail to see how the actual model could ever deliver. That being said, a 1:35 Cacharodontosaurus is on my hitlist of must-have large meaters!

The prototype is just one work that can afford to have plenty of meticulous care put into it, usually by the artist himself. Once it enters mass production, we will expect a drop off in quality, or else accept that the price will be at a much higher point than it is. Even so, with quality expensive statues like the Sideshow Dinosauria, there were STILL discrepancies. Also I've noticed that the first run productions always have the best paint job, so it's best to get these early.

Perfectly understandable if like the rest of us you already have about 10 other T Rexes! I still love this PNSO because it represents one of the milestones in standards for T Rex. 🙂

I may be wrong as I'm not a biologist but IIRC there are some bird species, mainly eagles and owls, which have both scales and feathers on their legs and feet (the vast majority of birds have fully scaled feet and legs with no feathers at all). So imprints of one may not be conclusive evidence for the absence of the other. The debate about feathers on tyrannosaurids is going to continue for a long time because, unlike with small theropods, of which exist many complete or near complete specimens, the majority of large tyronausaurid fossils are very fragmentary. And even if evidence for feathers is found, many will deny it, because they want to imagine dinosaurs as the movie monsters they grew up with, instead of the animals they were. Personally, scaled, feathered or both, I only care about the most accurate scientific understanding. Sadly, this is a very difficult thing in paleontology, given the fragmentary nature of fossils.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 3 жыл бұрын
What you said echoes for me what Dr Wu said in the JW movie "And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth" Many people already having an expectation. In the context of feathers, they will find some way to overlook it if they dont want to see it, and see it if they want to even if there was nothing there. It's also challenging that not all fossils will necessarily show the same qualities. Case in point is Dilong, which as I understand it, was found to have protofeathers, but in only one out of four specimens. Inconsistencies like this are probably going to muddy the soup a lot. Perhaps the bright side is that there will always be ground for speculation and imagination, and much leeway for artists and sculptors a like to make what they will of current evidence to wow us with their latest master works.

*No, birds do not have true scales.* The "scales" you see on bird legs, are actually called "Reticula". These are actually feathers which have evolved back into scales. If T. rex was featherless...it too would be covered in these reticula, and not true scales.

EoFauna have got to be one of the top companies if you really want accuracy. The only thing I wish was different would be the colour schemes of their dinosaurs. I can understand them not wanting to make dinosaurs too garish, but I think some little points of interest here and there might help. The blue on the neck of the Atlasaurus is a good example of that. I suggest that you order this as soon as you can. I've started to hear complaints that later run productions often have lesser paintwork than the initial release figures.
@mpchi
@mpchi 3 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, I think the paint work on their Atlasaurus is their best work. A very natural blend on brown and green washes with subtle patterns and transitions on those very detailed scales. The blue neck as an accent, I don't mind at all. Their Giganotosaurus, while praised by most, I found underwhelming. I love the head, the look, and proportion, but the unnatural paint patterns and single color red mouth makes it look very cheap, like someone drew with a brush or color sharpie. The skin details also paled when compared to Atlasaurus. If Eofauna's Giganotosaurus retain the same overall sculpt, but has the finer details and awesome paint finish like Atlasaurus, it will be the definitive Giganotosaurus in my collection. Unfortunately, that is not the case...

It does, but for safety and to prevent warping, it's best to use the stand if you are going to display it long term and not keep in box. On the other hand my Qianzhousaurus does stand, but most of the weight is actually on the front foot, with the rear foot not in complete contact. It's obvious if I were to forego the stand, it will soon keel over from warping. Also you never know, accidents happen. A gust of wind. Children running about the house. So I'd use the plastic rod.

They _are_ more expensive especially for some of the more obscure figures, but for the mainstream ones like PNSO they should be about the same. I hope this doesn't turn you off collecting. @@Maximus_12ST I've seen Trey's video, and that video makes an excellent point: no one really knows for sure. Each new piece of evidence hasn't so far completely neutralized the hypothesis before, because that's the wonder of paleontology: we can never ever really know. Because we don't have skin impression from _all_ over the animal, we can never conclude for sure. Even the Carnotaurus, which has always been lauded as a wonderful example of preserved skin, when you look at what patches they actually have (I talk about this in my PNSO Carnotaurus video), it's actually a very small area of the animal! Just based on phylogenetic bracketing we can be pretty sure that at some point in their ancestry some kind of filamentous structure was present. But were they full blown feathers, is anybody's guess. And how much was left by the time it got to T Rex, is also anyone's guess. But what we can say now for sure is that while T Rex wasn't completely feathered, we also cannot conclude that it was completely scaled. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle, as so many amazing paleoartists have depicted. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I enjoy each figure that has some rationale behind why it was that way. I equally enjoy my Wild Safari T Rex (though the CollectA Feathered T Rex needed a lot more convincing), and I equally enjoy this model by Zhao Chuang because both of them have rationales and yet each is beautiful in their own way. And when they stand side by side on my shelf, I am reminded of the challenges and the mystery of this amazing group of animals, and why I have not stopped loving them since I was a kid the way many of my friends have.
