Thanks for the video. I replaced my radiator, hoses, and thermostat yesterday and was not sure how to get to the thermostat, which has always been obvious on any other vehicle I've owned. For what it's worth, with the radiator and fan shroud out of the way I had no need to remove the fan in order to get to the thermostat, although I doubt that I would have ever found the bolts without watching a video.

Any issues with breaking the bolts upon removal? I have to do mine and they have not been removed in 20 years and I am concerned about breaking them when I remove them. Any thoughts? Did you need to use any locktite or thread sealer upon installation?

Very good and clear instructions you should do more instructional videos you have a talent for documentary video. I enjoyed this video presentation. I just lost an engine because my thermostat got stuck closed and did not let coolant circulate, consequently the engine overheated and destroyed itself, ouch!. The temperature gauge never showed any problem because the radiator fluid temp sensor never indicated an over-heating situation at the instrument panel. That is a flaw in the Engine temperature sensing system. It seems that the radiator fluid temperature is measured only on the radiator side of the thermostat and not on the engine side, for most faults this would be fine but not for a thermostat stuck in the closed position. I am going to try using a micro processor to measure the engine block temperature to see what the relative temperature safety zone is for actual driving and sound an audible alarm if temperatures are out of normal driving parameters, Very good job on your video.

Is their a certain way that the feet like the two things sticking out of the thermostat has to go?

With new wires and plugs and thermostat my five speed standard gets twenty three to twenty six MPG at 160000 odometer reading high way. Thanks 👍

Please be advised. I changed my thermostat. Got it back together and it wouldn't start. While pulling the Temp sensor wires back. I pulled out da crank sensor plug. I was a day away from giving up.

The gasket is located on the housing, there is a groove moulded into the housing for the gasket to slip into

Just finished this today, fixed my heat to where I sweat and gauge now comes off "C". Advance Auto Carquest OE thermostat did not fit without falling out, but AutoZone Duralast OE worked perfect! Although now my gauge goes down to about 1/3 (which is still higher than before) when I let off the gas sometimes and goes back up when accelerating...? Amazing vid btw!!

Jefkoz, I have a 1995 Ranger (2.3 L) with the tangs on the thermostat as your 1998 has. I think my main problem is not having that thermostat lined up correctly (upon putting the new one in). Because the thermostat wasn't functioning properly. Basically it's open the entire time because the tangs aren't seated properly. QUESTIONS: For the new gasket with the 3 holes in it, did you use a paper or rubber gasket, and, did you put RTV or some kind of sealant on one or both sides of the gasket. This video has been greatly helpful.

Wish I could figure out how to get the left bolt on the housing started. Ya can't see up in there, the bolt is black (8mm) the housing is black and when I use a mirror all I see is black, lol.

Thanks for the video. I have the exact same model truck and my gas mileage has always been sort of low, like 17 or 18 mpg around town and 20 ish on the highway. I suspect this could be why.

I am missing the right side bolt on my thermostat housing and leaking coolant when thermostat opens. Do you happen to know the size bolt that is used from factory? My dealer just told me they are discontinued and they have no specs on bolt size, thread pitch, ext.

why do people leave out the most difficult thing to do. starting the bolts and keeping everything in place is the hardest thing to do, getting your socket on to remove and using your socket to install wiil make you crazy!

the thermostat housings go bad and wont allow a good seal for the thermostat,filling the housing with coolant to test is an excellent way to save you grief should the housing not mate with the thermostat.little or no heat and low temp is a tell tale sign of a bad seal.

Dude. You are driving an Automatic, with a Tach. My 99 5 speed, has no Tach. Ford Designers are smoking too much Charcoal.
