I found this engine on Craigslist, seller said it had a blown head gasket so I bought it to do a quick rebuild, but once I tore it down, things got very interesting.
Not an ls engine, not a hemi, not a BMW turbo engine, not Mercedes amg, not Ford coyote or ecoboost, but Ford 2.5l sohc pinto motor.

My 98 ranger has this same engine, 367k miles with basically routine maintenance, timing belt needs replacing soon again, oil changes every 4 to 5k miles mobil one since i got it with 45k miles , 20 years now ,no cracks in dash or even ripped seats , best truck i ever had ,definitely beating my 07 Silverado by a lot

great video ! looking for some advice on my 2000 ford 2.5l. i have a lean code, checked for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine. there was smoke coming out of the idle air control valve's(IAC) top/breaher cap/vent (not sure want its called), and on the Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR valve) vents holes . wanted to know if that was normal?
@everydayirace
@everydayirace Жыл бұрын
Does it idle normal? If it does then idle control valve is working normal. Check EGR valve with a vacuum pump and if it doesn't hold vacuum it's faulty.

head bolts are stretch to yeild, tighten all to 37 lbs then loosen em up, then back to 37 , gives the bolt time to stretch. then tighten them to 50, then you do 90° turn. thats it but in that order, ive done 6 of these motors. you must get the timing right, its a non-interference motor, if the timing belt breaks the valves dont bend, that weird box on the driver side is where the pcv valve goes. these lifters do go bad causing skipping thats hard to diagnose.

Hello, sir. I wanted to thank you for sharing your content here. I got ahold of a 97 ranger 2.3 and I love the truck a lot but the previous owner let the cooling system rust out and I'm replacing the whole cooling system on it. Later down the road I want to rebuild one from the ground up from a few used models and it's awesome to see how the engine works from the inside out. Do you have any recommendations on what parts to keep an eye out for when buying a used one? It doesn't fuss when running, produce smoke or anything when running. After finding the water pump blades literally rusted away it's made me a bit paranoid. Thanks for reading sir and for such awesome videos

Biggest job with rusted cooling system would be replacing heater core on a ranger.

@@everydayirace thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate the advice. I would like to hear your input please, as I replaced the the timing belt and I'm a bit insure. I could only get it to fit with the cam triangle very slightly advanced, otherwise it could not have everything else in line and be tensioned. I turned it on, and at first it made a worrying tapping noise, and then after centering the harmonic balancer on the bottom by hand it sounds significantly better but I don't remember hearing a very soft mechanical tapping before. Do you know from your experience if that is a typical sound it makes or is that not supposed to happen and it would be better to try adjusting the belt again? It sounded aggressively tappy again when I turned it on for the first time today and then the following start up it sounds normal. I want to think it could be a vacuum symptom or possibly old gas but I'm concerned about the belt. I uploaded a video of the engine starting and idling on my channel. If possible could you please give it a listen for your thoughts. Thanks a bunch, - Dave

@@davidpennant5535 slightly advanced is fine, tapping noise was probably from lifters pumping up, it's normal.

What bolts do I need for the engine stand? I really want to turbocharge my 2.5 l in my long bed ranger it's a 1998.. but there seems to be not a lot of information out there.. what throttle body to use? What about the criteria with the turbo exhaust manifold? And would you have to do a lot of prefab work for the intercooler piping and mounting of intercooler.. and do you use a standalone computer or a flashed ECU.. and would you have to modify the fuel system fuel rail etc? Hey I snapled across your page appreciate your approach and information.. thank you
@everydayirace
@everydayirace Жыл бұрын
Turbocharging 2.5l is exactly the same as turbocharging any other engine, obviously more power will require more fuel, so you'll need bigger injectors to provide more fuel, the size depends on the amount of power and type of fuel, you can run flashed ecu or a stand alone ecu, if you live in a state that requires emission testing you'll need to run flashed ecu. Throttle body isn't what's going to limit the power, unless you're building 500+ hp engine.

@@everydayirace what about the exhaust manifold do you have any information on where I can purchase, I'm in Florida there's no emissions.. I'm not an expert but I'm pretty engine savvy.. I definitely would want to run a standalone so I can adjust my parameters based on my performance enhancers... Any tips on an introductory kit exhaust manifold injectors you use mega squirt right? If you can run a couple of purchases that I need to make I'd appreciate that cuz I'm lost man I know what I need to do but I've been looking I haven't found nothing..

@@ChadR13 I've seen someone on Facebook post turbo headers for Ford rangers up for sale few weeks ago, they were $900 I believe, you can probably find it on there, he built 10 of them. I've used mega squirt ecus in the past, they're good units, there are also many other brands, you just have to decide what your needs are and go from there. I'd recommend installing stand alone ecu before you turbocharging the engine, that's what I am going to be doing, going to build adapter harness and use it on my truck mainly to collect better data.

Good luck with that remanufactured engine. I mean that sincerely. I put a reman 2.5 in my '99 and it made it to 31,000 miles before it started showing signs of valve recession. That's what I get for buying an engine from AutoZone. But I didn't have much of a choice at that point in my life. Im glad I hung onto my '89 F150, that straight six is indestructible.
