As a Browns fan, one of the reasons why AVP was let go was because of how stale the offensive scheme had become. A lot of what Breer mentions of, 11-6 without a lot of players and so forth, absolutely you can make the argument to run it back. But, that offense was stuck in 1998 (Mike Shanahan's offense), that the decision was made to revamp the offensive staff, not just firing AVP. This happened with Baltimore last yr, where Greg Roman was let go for Todd Monken. In the loaded AFC North, the Cleveland offense simply needed to evolve with some fresh ideas
@PMiller34255 ай бұрын
Ya browns fan here as well. Stefanski called plays and was at least as big an influence on the offense as AVP. Bill Callahan played a huge role on the offensive coaching staff as well. So I would love to say you got a great coach or you got a dud but we don’t know
@jake.porter5 ай бұрын
browns fan too. i would agree but i also think it took chubb getting hurt to see that. if chubb doesn’t you’re probably looking at a top 10 or top 7 offense and avp could’ve bought himself another year. however, with kevin calling plays maybe it was a little difficult for avp to develop consistent rhythm with the offense. i think with him calling plays in NE this will be a good opportunity for him to showcase what he’s capable of similar to bienemy in washington.

It's quite possible the Patriots kept this one under the radar or his name was floated and dismissed because he wasn't the shiny new up and comming coordinator.

@@osonhoustonThey didn't. The Patriots were totally devoid of qualified candidates and relied on Eliot Wolf's past association with AVP to land him.

Alex Van Pelt played a major role in the Patriots winning their first Super Bowl in 2001 by leading the Bills to a late-season win at the Jets. It was a major upset and it opened the door for New England to win the division and get a first-round bye. The Jets went out to Oakland and got smoked in the wild card round and we all know what happened the next week in Foxboro.

I like that Jerod Mayo is working directly with Eliot Wolf. Let’s see them add to the staff for a clean sweep from the past. They’re starting from scratch on offense.

2:20 Roger Staubach didn't call his own plays. I'm not sure Bradshaw did either. I seem to remember Noll sending in the plays by rotating the tight ends. Terry might have called them toward the end. I'm certain about Dallas. They rotated it in with their Tight End first then Fullbacks later. (Landry was so serious about this that he rotated QBs during a couple of unfortunate stretches.) This was a long standing point of contention with Roger. By the time Kelly did, he was it.

AVP isn't exactly from the tight khaki, man-rocket school of coaching (McVay, LaFleur, Shanahan, Kingsbury, et al) so I'm guessing he got here cuz he just knows what he's doing.

4:20.. that's NOT why AVP was let go... He was moved on because, the offense was predictable..Opponents were literally telegraphic what was coming next..it was easy to defend and the Cleveland Browns wanted to move on from a pedestrian offense

Im confused, why wasn’t it ever reported that he had interviewed for the job, did he interview? And if so, why wouldn’t the Pats disclose the interview along with the 12 other OC candidates? My take is it was a last minute discussion, probably after several other candidates declined or showed little interest.

I don't know that you can blame Van Pelt for Watson. He may not be the same guy anymore. Very talented, but he missed a lot of time. A better question would be: why did the Browns spend $250 million, all of it guaranteed, on a player that couldn't even play the first year? Then injured two years in a row. He hasn't played a full season worth of games in three years.

@andrewfoster81005 ай бұрын
What don’t you like about the move? I see it as a really positive one. I like the fact that he’s a guy with no ties to the organization with a lot of experience running an offense. No, he’s not one of the hot young up and comers, but he runs a really good offense, and I like that he has experience working with different types of QBs. With him at the helm, I feel like we can work with any of Williams, Maye, or Daniels, whereas you probably needed exactly Maye to get the most out of a Zach Robinson or Nick Caley
@DSlav24885 ай бұрын
@andrewfoster8100 like everything. He's a no name person. No one knows alex van pelt. I wanted a young and up and coming guy. I don't care about "tied to the organization". I wanted a young, innovative person....that's not what this guy is.
@bunz6665 ай бұрын
@@DSlav2488 you don't have to be young to be innovative. AVP was innovating enough in Cleveland with 4 different QBs. I'm sure the new NE offense will be more unpredictable in play calling than it was the last 4 years with run, run, pass, punt.
@andrewfoster81005 ай бұрын
@@DSlav2488 if you had your heart set on a young up and comer, I get where you’re coming from. That said, I do think you’re being a bit too dismissive of the positives a guy like AVP brings, and maybe overlooking some of the negatives of having a leadership team with no experience. AVP brings a steady hand to an otherwise highly inexperienced team, and he’s demonstrated the ability to succeed in a variety of suboptimal situations. I’d personally still love to see us bring in a younger innovator as an assistant who could maybe take over the job in a few years, but I don’t think that’s off the table by any stretch, and in the meantime he should bring much-needed stability to what has been a really volatile group the last few years

Alex Van Pelt was hamstrung by Berry's very poor drafting record and they were Berry's newest scape goats for Berry, Depodesti and Stefanski utterly failing the Browns. Joe Flacco made these 3 idiots running the Browns look good because Berry brought for qbs to Cleveland that sucked but seemingly met the requirement of being black that was enacted by Berry himself.
